Game audio seminar at La Trobe

Submitted by (Lorien Dunn)

I am presenting a seminar from 3-4pm next Monday (the 31st) in Western Lecture Theater 3 at La Trobe University, Bundoora campus, Melbourne. It is called "Scriptable Audio Synthesis for Computer Games". This will be a slightly expanded re-hash of my presentation at ADCOG- the 3rd International Conference on Application and Development of Computer Games- last month in Hong Kong.

A little of this material was covered during my presentation for PC Game Audio Systems at freeplay.

It is free, all are welcome, and the lecture theater has a capacity of 190. I doubt it will fill for a seminar on game audio, but first come first serve if it does :)

Abstract:
Embedded game scripting languages have been employed in commercial games for about a decade now. Existing game scripting languages have limited audio controls, or are used in conjunction with limited audio scripting languages such as AudioVBScript. However full audio scripting languages allow audio synthesis, and have been in existence for over 40 years, but have not yet gained any usage in applications outside of research. In this paper we make the point that full audio scripting languages must be
embedded in games to take game-audio to the next level, and to give audio architects greater control over their contribution to game software. We propose that audio scripting should be in the same language as game-play scripting so that sound generation may be appropriately coupled with the entities causing the sounds for increased realism. Further we show that it is possible to add this functionality to existing game-audio APIs.
