Day 2 -- Little game for Freeplay
Day 2 working on my little game for freeplay (just for the hell of it, to get into the indie thing!).
You move around a single screen world, and pick up\place blocks to reorganise the world.
As I get more done, I want to randomly generate the terrain on start, have hostile conditions occur periodically (acidic rain makes you need to build shelter, snowfall blocks in levels) etc.
Also there'll be a crafting system (ie, plant a seed on top of exposed earth (not grass) and crops will begin to grow... which can be harvested for food or sold.
Game will be free, and I'll start posting builds soon!
Lots to do!
Scott.

Hah
Aaah crap, now that it's newsworthy I'd better finish it! :D

Day 3
Day 3: Put in a nice background, made it rain and made the rain erode uncovered mud blocks (just like science!). You don't want this to happen because you grow crops on mud blocks.

Looking awesome!
Hey, that's looking awesome!!
The block building mechanisms remind me a bit of Minecraft (which seems to be the fun thing to play with at the moment). Maybe you could push this into that direction (letting users build pixel block art / content) as well!
Minecraft
Minecraft is definately a big influence; I've registered and whittled away quite a few hours on that game.
I'm kinda thinking about it as a Dwarf Fortress + Minecraft + 2D platformer.
Although I've just started on this recently, it's an idea that's been bouncing around in my head for a while. I've wanted to make something with ANSI graphics to tap into the old ANSI art scene (so all the oldschool people will think I'm cool).
I'm also interested in making something you can drown a few hours in; whether you've played before or not. This game is built from event based bits that can cascade on each other, so the final experience should be pretty deep I hope.
I'd hoped to make it a multiplayer thing too, but (fixed link www.everybodyedits.com ) beat me to the punch on that one.
I'll hopefully get a few more vids out this week. I've been a bit busy and have only really been reading up on cool ways to generate my landscapes.
I've decided that I'll probably keep working on this one indefinately after freeplay and give it as much love as it warrants. I spend more time playing with it than working on it. :)
I'm setting up a dev blog, but I don't wanna fall into the trap of writing about stuff instead of making it.

What was that game...
That link seems to be dead - would be curious to see about that game though.
What was that multiplayer indie game from a little while back where you could reshape / build the landscape and place points to connect energy streams to power things? That game looked really great, however, they didn't really push the creativity side of it as much, rather than focus on the strategy part of the game.
www.everybodyedits.com
www.everybodyedits.com was what I was looking for.
I think you're talking about LOVE. That was really cool too but I just didn't get into it in the same was I did Minecraft.
I just kept respawning and getting shot by people that looked like jumping clothespegs. I probably got griefed out of it before I could be bothered to learn the ropes. :(
I'll put up a playable build of my game pretty soon too so I can get some feedback as I make it.

fun
oh man, got a bit sidetracked while trying that out. It's definitely a fun little diversion though! Had a whole lot of laughs, but was shocked to read that they go through 7 terabytes of bandwidth per month.
Music Tracker in the game for no reason.
So last night I got bored and turned a bit of the level into a music tracker.
The loop cycles from left to right in the music area and any block sitting in that loop plays it's respective sample.
Different bits of wood sound like different bongo beats, gold sounds like a cymbol crash, dirt blocks sound like distorted kicks, rock\coal sounds like bass drums etc.
If you spend some time you can make something that sounds like music, or you can always drop bits and pieces all over the place to improv (like the video above).
I don't think it'll be part of the game... just a toy to mess around with. I was also thinking about making a "beatbox" object, that when positioned turns its line into part of the pattern... so people can craft beatboxes and then make their levels musical if they feel the desire.
Hell, why not?
