Flash flooding in Prahran, Friday night, 4th Feb 2011
On Friday evening, I left the Endgame office in Richmond at 7.15pm for a dinner appointment on Chapel St, Prahran at 8pm (a couple of suburbs away).
At 7.20pm, the remnants of Cyclone Yasi hit Melbourne with torrential rain, some 2500 kms away from where Yasi landed in Australia.
Visibility was the worst I've ever seen (maybe 20 metres) and traffic slowed to a crawl, with many motorists pulling off to the side, unable to see well enough to continue driving. By the time I reached Malvern Road, the police had already blocked it off due to flash flooding. So I turned around and parked in Williams Road, with the goofy idea to walk the few blocks to Chapel St "when I caught a break in the rain" - I figured Chapel St was mostly undercover due to the shopping district so I should be ok...
Catching my break in the rain (or so I thought), I set out. Here is some of the footage of Prahran as I made the arduous journey to Chapel St. Captured on my iPhone in some pretty dreadful conditions, so the picture quality is not brilliant.
Despite my determination to make the dinner appointment, it didn't happen.
