Definitely influenced by Stunt Car Racer from the C64 / Amiga.. from the red and white striped tracks, crazy jumps, to the bulky engine / pipes and suspension springs in front of the car.

The game speed is a lot faster and the tracks look much more impressive, however.

One thing I would love to see fixed is the lack of a 'bounce' after the jump at 0"56.

Besides that - AWESOME, will purchase!

Thanks for the comments, we decided to take a bit off the bouncing as it was sending the player flying off the tracks too much!

Check out the blog on the Sector3 website for more about the development of Fumes (and our other games):

The massive bounces was one of the main core game mechanics in Stunt Car Racer :) You had to make sure you lined up right for every ramp otherwise you'd land and bounce yourself off the track - which happened fairly often with the harder tracks. And yeh, while it was a fairly unique and challenging gamestyle for back then, I can see it as an excersize in frustration for most players today.

For those interested, Fumes (Universal App) will be available on the iTunes App Store this week (Wed/Thurs) in all regions. Grab your copy day 1 and help us topple the charts!

AppSpy have just reviewed Fumes, and looking at the person playing it, it looks like a really fun racer. I'm getting flashbacks of the old Stunt Car Racer with the massive jumps, sliding around corners and having to fight to stay on the track etc from the footage. Definitely a worthy spiritual successor to the original. I think they did try to revive Stunt Car Racer a few years ago for the PC, though. Just checked wikipedia and it looks like it got cancelled.

Anyway, congratulations on releasing the game, it looks great!

I'd never heard of the game before the post on tsumea, but was very excited as I'm a huge Stunt Car Racer fan. I literally watched the itunes store daily waiting for it to become available.

For $2.49 it's hard to criticize, but there were some pretty poor reviews on itunes all stating that the controls were cack...

Sure enough, in the default control mode (thumb used for steering) I gotta say I was terribly disappointed. Having watched the vid above I noticed the tilt steering method and it's a million times better. I'll be spending some more time with it soon, but it seems like it could be great fun!

Oh forgot to add...

The interface seems a bit buggy. Sometimes touch is unresponsive and items can't be checked/unchecked properly. Hard to see how this got missed in ANY QA pass...

Not sure if its there in the full game but the original stunt car racer had the awesome grinding sparks when you put your wheels over the edges of the track. Grinding was the best part - especially jumping an entire bend of the track, landing to grind then controlling it back onto the track before the finish line the slamming through with a busted as hell car.

Does it have that - if not please add that stuff Tommy and Justin. :)
