[edit] History
Established in 1996, the IR Gurus development team has extensive experience developing for the PC, Sony PlayStation systems, and Microsoft Xbox formats. IR Gurus has skilled individuals representing all of the key disciplines of video game development. The company originally specialized in equestrian and stadium sports games, creating the Saddle Club games and securing exclusive development rights for the lucrative Australian Football League AFL license.
The company operates from a studio in Melbourne on the banks of the Yarra River.
IR Gurus started out by developing AFL titles for acclaim. This all went fine until in 2004 Acclaim went bust, and development had already started on the 2005 title. There was a moment of indecision, however, the downfall of Acclaim ended up being IR Gurus saviour when the development rights to the AFL automatically went back to the developer, in this case IR Gurus. IR Gurus then approached Sony who in return became the publisher for the AFL 2005 game for PS2 with THQ subsequently publishing the PC and XBox version.
IR Gurus also has acquired a number of companies over the years. One was That Game, which was being led by industry veteran Ben Palmer. Ben after leaving Atari Melbourne house decided to start his own studio, and had acquired quite a number of industry veterans under his belt. With a partnership with IR Gurus they shared the same office location. That Game developed Heroes of the Pacific, while IR Gurus continued on the sports title. In 2005, That Game and IR Gurus became the one company.
In 2006 IR Gurus began to focus on becoming a next gen developer, they have hired a number of new staff which builds the studios up to over 80 employees. Also IR Gurus moved from their carlton office to a spencer street office to cope with the increase in staff.
At the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, an interview by Gamespot with IR Gurus executive producer Ben Palmer revealed the current size of the studio...
"We're just under 100 people now full-time, and growing. We also contract a lot of work to other Australian companies and international ones on occasion. We're definitely expanding, and we're looking at a few options on how to do that. We're now looking for very specific skill-sets." [1]
August 27, 2007 - Red Mile Entertainment, Inc. (OTCBB: RDML) ("Red Mile"), a worldwide developer and publisher of interactive entertainment software, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the remaining outstanding shares of IR Gurus Pty Ltd. ("IR Gurus"), a leading privately held video game development studio based in Melbourne, Australia. Under the terms of the definitive agreement, IR Gurus would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Red Mile. [2]
