Description

This is where you'll find all the details and contestants for the Sumea Modeller challenges!

Sumea Challenge #8 - oco 'Two Ton Tony'

Hey all, This is my concept.

A gypsy boxer, a pugilist. Hes travelled to the uncharted corners of the world, fought wars, beasts and was once ship wrecked and had to eat his companions to survive. returning covered in tattoos and stories. A giant of a man who has learnt to wear his belt high, so as to never recive a blow from an honorable man below it.

Good luck everyone in

Submitted by Schlumppy on Wed, 07/06/06 - 7:09 AM Permalink

Nice drawing. This guy looks cool and very tought. So what is the lower half of him going to look like? For some reason to me he looks like he should be wearing some kind of head scarf or an ear ring.

Submitted by J I Styles on Wed, 07/06/06 - 8:16 AM Permalink

nose spikes along the bridge, and lobe extenders :)

Submitted by MoonUnit on Thu, 08/06/06 - 10:39 PM Permalink

looking really cool, a bit of a mauri feel to it. For good visual refs search up some images of "andre the giant" a old skool wrestler who was about 7 foot 5!

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 09/06/06 - 10:00 PM Permalink

I disagree with Schlumppy about the headscarf... It would make him look less tough IMO.
But maybe some piercings like J.I. Styles suggested. Would show he's been around the world and visited different cultures and has a mark on his body from their customs or something.
Overall, great concept!

Love the concept it should be realy cool, on my character I am also going with a fairly geometric tattoo pattern.
The tats work realy well with your guy, I will have to be different and say that I don't realy think he NEEDS piercings I mean piercings aren't all that suited to a fighter and this guy has far more of that pure fighter Sagat feel to him.

Submitted by oco on Sat, 17/06/06 - 2:43 AM Permalink

Thanks for all the replys. Been of the air for a bit but back now with a little update. Quick sketch of the lower body of this here man. He may once of had piercings but they where torn out in some dirty fights long ago, and he's learnt his lesson. Nose spikes coould be the ticket though. I'll do up some sketches. Going for a simple 'tough as nails' look. Maybe some rope around the wrist and hands?

Submitted by oco on Sat, 17/06/06 - 6:57 AM Permalink

Added a bit of colour

Submitted by poppin fresh on Sat, 17/06/06 - 10:24 AM Permalink

I love the rope idea, adds to the sideshow feel he has going on.
Big fan of the highpants they look great, certainly has that classic look to him.
In the full body concept the left arm seems detached because of the lack of supporting structure around the bicep, other than that I am a huge fan of this design.

Submitted by oco on Sun, 18/06/06 - 5:28 AM Permalink

Got some modeling done. Pretty happy with the rump! Not done with the front or legs yet though. Cheers for the feed back Poppinfresh, funny when you work on something you've created and you can't notice the obvious probs. Fours eyes are better then two! Thanks mate

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 23/06/06 - 1:35 AM Permalink

The model is looking a little fatter than in the concept. I know its a WIP and it may not have been intentional, but I liked the proportions in the concept better (for the stomach region). Other than that, it's looking great.

Submitted by palantir on Tue, 27/06/06 - 10:45 PM Permalink

Looking good Oco. I like that head design, very stylised and lots of character.

Submitted by Makk on Thu, 29/06/06 - 10:09 PM Permalink

Progressing well oco :)
Though his face doesnt quite match the menacing expression of the concept. ARE you planning on doing some facial morphs later? If not it might be good to spend some time on his expression. Mostly lowering the inner side of the brow, etc If you dont know what I mean, make an angry face in the mirror!! :)

Submitted by oco on Fri, 30/06/06 - 3:51 AM Permalink

Know exactly what your talking about, this bad boy is yet to be posed. Built with a mesh topolgy for animation so he'll be easy to alter. Just experimenting with skinning him - leading to developing the tattoos which will soon cover his body.

Submitted by Neffy on Fri, 30/06/06 - 5:24 AM Permalink

Woah thats really nice texturing, im in love with that big nose its adds so much uniqueness and character to the model.

my only critique is the bottom lip looks a bit to triangular, im not sure what men of that size, lips look like but thats just something i noticed.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Sun, 02/07/06 - 3:30 AM Permalink

That facial render allready has so much character, this is going to be a really good entry!

Submitted by skipgamer on Wed, 02/08/06 - 12:38 PM Permalink

I like the style of this guy alot :) reminds me alot of zangeif + balrogg + blanka all rolled into one :P

you can never overwork the muscles! Its looking really nice maybe put a bit more definition into the chest

Sumea Challenge #8-openanewworld(4-9-2006)

This is the low poly 5300 triangles, still not yeap clean up, just try to show as soon as possible.
Too many works recently, don't even have time to learn modelling, completely impossible for me to finish the challenge, and normal map is bloody hard, approaching to good result is impossible too, but I will still try put some updates here.

I am modelling so slow, aiii don't feel I can finish it anymore[xx(], still far from clean a lot of meshes are mess at the moment, when I put her cloth on[:I]I will clean them up

Finally I can start modelling, all model sheet is done, the color concept I feel I will do it later, I have to start modelling it is very late already

Finally I am nearly finish my model sheet so late so delay from schedule, you guys have done awsome jobs, there are so many great arts like shika, HazarD,J.I. Styles, Hiporu..... seems only thing I can do is trying to learn now, I am still designing the weapon so late, shit and I am suck at modelling[V]

Hi I am still drawing drafts for my character (Zenobia), the shape is pretty much defined through. She is a Hunter. She is so brutal to her enemies, very cold outside, she is a killing machine but she never enjoys killing. In her heart, there is only hatred, she need to revenge and she believes she is always alone. She never believes hope is necessary. Through slaughtering her enemies, she feels her existing. There is only one piece of humanity inside her; it is her memory of her family which is destroyed 140 years ago by a hopping corpse. Hopefully you guys like it, I will try to put updates here as soon as possible.

I try to post all my updates in first page, now I try to create some atmosphere and color palletes for the character, I want to create some movements for her too so I decide use a very short comic to express her motions. Also I can analyse wheather the uniform is practical enough when she is moving. I feel I will spend more time on concepting also because the soccer games take over most of my time [:D]

Submitted by Phish on Tue, 06/06/06 - 9:36 PM Permalink

gorgeous! love the hat and hair

Submitted by XY01 on Tue, 06/06/06 - 10:04 PM Permalink

Great concept work. I especially like the lines of the weapon you've designed. Nice work, cant wait to see how it turns out.

Submitted by openanewworld on Tue, 06/06/06 - 10:10 PM Permalink

Thanks XY01 and Phish, I am pretty bad at modelling so I just use this chance to study modelling.

Submitted by J I Styles on Tue, 06/06/06 - 11:43 PM Permalink

cool! someone's a long way into concepting already, looks like you've locked a lot of design elements down [:D] Great job!

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Tue, 06/06/06 - 11:44 PM Permalink

Fantastic black and whites. Really like the unique armour that has it's own feel. Hard to place where it might be from (that's a good thing). The clothing while revealing also looks really functional, stripped down to bare necessity which would aid stealth.

One thing tho', the challenge brief does mention no guns but there are a couple of crossbows and a cool looking spear/crossbow/gun hybrid. Are they a part of the design? They look very effective.

Is it worth clearing up whether it means 'no guns' or no projectile weapons (bow and arrows, crossbows)? IMO, once you start getting projectile weapons, you start heading into First Person Shooter territory.

Damn nice drawings, tho'.

Submitted by openanewworld on Wed, 07/06/06 - 12:11 AM Permalink

J.I. Styles thanks man, I am the guy drawing concept for kalescentstudios, you taught me a lot of coloring before, thanks, now I try to use color to express my ideas but still in black and white stage [:(].

JonathanKerr thanks, yeap those weapons are part of the design, origionally I want to make a old school rifle gun but this challenge doesn't allow gun so I go for a crossbow with knife on it. I do wish this challenge allows some projectile weapon or at least clarify it, if it doesn't allow those weapons I have to change again.

Submitted by Neffy on Wed, 07/06/06 - 12:17 AM Permalink

Theres so much beautiful detail in those concepts, i love this design your going to be able to make a wicked normal map with this.

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Wed, 07/06/06 - 12:38 AM Permalink

Most fighting games have projectile attacks such as fireballs but not usually projectile weapons... however you can always find examples of characters in fighting games using weapons that are not necessarily part of their design. eg - Ibuki from Streetfighter 3, she has a kunai (throwing blade) air-attack. Nightwolf in Mortal Kombat 3 had a spirit bow and arrow that sort of appeared out of nowhere, and Rolento in Streetfighter Alpha 2 has a grenade attack which if you look at the sprite, you can see the grenades hanging off his uniform (although his main form of attack is a staff).

I guess you need to ask yourself if a crossbow says 'fighting game character' or not.

Submitted by J I Styles on Wed, 07/06/06 - 1:23 AM Permalink

Hey Herman, I wasn't sure at first if it was you or not (the name was familiar), but when I saw your linework I recognised you instantly :) great stuff man!

Submitted by PeterDavis on Wed, 07/06/06 - 4:17 AM Permalink

if its the herman i think it is, i dont like the sound of going up against him. >_<

Submitted by Delmo on Wed, 07/06/06 - 9:34 AM Permalink

Hey Herman, that's looking great. I'm definitely a fan of that weapon and the hat design is really cool too. Your drawing skills are tops I'm sure you will pick up modelling quickly. Interested to see what colours you choose.

Submitted by poppin fresh on Wed, 07/06/06 - 10:21 AM Permalink

Some fantastic concept art there I am sure you will do them great justice, can't go wrong with hoop ear rings.

Submitted by WhiteEagle on Wed, 07/06/06 - 7:52 PM Permalink

Amazing concepts man, I really dig the style and technique. I think any of those designs would make a great character.[:)]

Submitted by openanewworld on Wed, 07/06/06 - 8:31 PM Permalink

Neffy, I never make normal map before, I don't have confident to model that character at all but thank you for your comment

WhiteEagle, thanks, the right one is pretty much the shape I like most

poppin fresh, thanks, my poor modelling skill is probably can't allow me to follow the origional design

Delmo, thank you so much, will you join the challenge? Troy will join it, man really want to see your 3d model they are good, I like that knife dragon you made, really looking forward you join in

PeterDavis, do I know you? I am very open to any critiques all the time[:)]

JonathanKerr, I like that crossbow design it is a knife too, but at the end it will be just a decoration I feel

Submitted by PeterDavis on Wed, 07/06/06 - 10:36 PM Permalink

I did a degree with a Herman at Uni. the linework looks very similar if not the same which is why im inclined to recognise. BA Animation?

either way, the concept are really good, im just having a little trouble visualising how she will look when doing melee attacks.

Submitted by Delmo on Wed, 07/06/06 - 11:29 PM Permalink

Yeah absolutely, I will join in on the fun.[:)] I'll start my entry alittle later though since I will be overseas visiting family in tokyo.

I like it lots, am a big fan of that hair style.

Would love to see you keep the vibrant colours.

Submitted by Johnn on Thu, 08/06/06 - 9:09 AM Permalink

! interesting skew of genre with european court influenced clothing! not unlike the representation of western characters in some Hong Kong cinema either... could make an interesting result.

Submitted by J I Styles on Thu, 08/06/06 - 11:10 AM Permalink

Thanks guys, glad the roughs are getting some ideas across! And yeah, I want to try and keep the vibrancy - try and do a design that's quite different from my normal stuff.

Damn John, I didn't think my fashion tinkering was that obvious, you pretty much nailed it :D
I was originally playing with formal/ornate Korean/Chinese designs, but then I started to try some Baroque/Victorian and Chinese mix; a lot looked terrible, but this one I started to like the overall feel of. I think in the end it's going to end up a little gothic lolita-ish since so much of that fashion is just plain cool, but hoping to have it a little more western feel with an ornate chinese silk dress spin on it. We'll see how it goes, maybe I'm just poisoning it with too many ingrediants. Oh, and inevitably I'll include a corset cut into it somehow since no matter what I do, that always happens

Submitted by Ninja on Thu, 08/06/06 - 10:09 PM Permalink

oh no joel go away :) .... nah kidding buddy i know you will do a kick arse job as usual. (probably win again).

very kool keep it up.

Okay, okay! Nice start man, I'll be joining the fray when I get back from a short break.

Submitted by J I Styles on Mon, 12/06/06 - 10:01 PM Permalink

Been getting a few hours in here and there, I've got some more concept pieces fleshed out but not really ready for presentation so I'll get those up later this week (or at least 1). I've got her background fleshed out, and I'll be going for a bit more innocent faced character (looks a bit more baby faced in the image since it's a higher angle shot)I've managed to get the main torso base out and rough out the head. I'm ignoring my nasty loops and messy geometry, and since I'm so impatient, I'd plugged the head into zbrush and started to model and texture a bit [:)] I figure I can scale back and rip it later... I wanted to have fun with her NOW! [B)]

haven't had too much time to do anything over the past week, but this will turn into my final concept - it's still quite a way from being finished yet, still need to get past this basic pass (and add the rest of her design elements), then get it detailed to nail the final design.

I've done a quick write up of her backstory, but needs to be expanded and better explained -- the whole thing's not ready to post yet, but here's the basics:

She's the unknowing orphaned child of two lines of warlord families that have fought togethor for centuries -- in other words the offspring of a romeo and juliet type of union/situation.
She's inherited this warrior lineage, and the two short swords she carries where birth gifts from her grandfathers, one from each side of the family. These swords have been passed down for centuries, and have become sentient from being bathed in the thousands of souls that they've released from the mortal world and now literally act as her companions and consciounce - one destructive and chaotic (symbolising bad), one just and fair (symbolising good).

Submitted by Makk on Fri, 16/06/06 - 1:49 AM Permalink

Sexy, Im glad your going with that hairstyle, my fav of the bunch. I'd probably go with a smaller bust though.

Submitted by WAR HEAD on Fri, 16/06/06 - 1:57 AM Permalink

Sounds cool JI. I really like the swords idea - they sound like an important part of the character and her background. Are you going to do a detail of the swords or are we just gonna have to wait until they are modelled?

Submitted by J I Styles on Fri, 16/06/06 - 2:09 AM Permalink

yeah the swords will be pretty pivotal, I'll definitely get a sword concept out in a detail sheet, but probably be a little later at this stage.

Agreed on the bust, my lighting is definitely off which isn't helping too.

Submitted by tojo on Thu, 29/06/06 - 7:50 AM Permalink

No time recently, but I've had enough here and there to finish my final character concept up (or at least finished enough [;)]), I'll do some more thumbnails on the weapon designs and a few pattern designs I think. 2D is definitely not my forte', but I'm still quite pleased with how the design's coming along.

"2d is definately not my forte" - YEAH RIGHT! [:P] come on man its illegal for art'istes of your ilk to say things like that, it makes us plebs look like complete imbeciles.

Looks awesome!

Submitted by J I Styles on Tue, 04/07/06 - 8:14 AM Permalink

hahaha [:D] not saying I'm not happy with how it turned out, just that in 2d I can point out all these bits which are wrong and bug me, but I just don't know why or how to fix them without fiddling around with things for hours on end... 2d still has a large area of mystery and frustration for me; keeps me in awe of painters throughout history and the concept artists of today, I have so much respect for these people, you guys and girls rock! :)

Sumea Challenge #8 - johnn

here is progress so far for me - on the left are 4 of the 6 sketches that i initially did after reading the comp brief. On the right is the second evenings revisit of what I think might be the better 2 ideas. I was hoping a more emotive painting of each would seperate a clear winner for me but I'm still indecided...

Yeah, the wraps one is tops, but I also really like the pose of the red costumed chick with the sword. Nice perspective and foreshortening on the red costumed character.

To me, this is the first entry that's really stood out and said 'fighter character'. The poses are cool and she looks like she knows how to handle herself.

go with the wraps. sticks can really hurt when you know how to use them.

Wahoo, glad the feedback has been for the stick-fighting teen! I have been leaning towards her, but thought the other might be more on the money regarding the competition brief.

These are the latest development sketches. Think I have sorted out a face for my gal :) and have done a warrior princess version of her too, although I'm not sure if it is an improvement upon the previous costume.

Casey, I would like to think I have become 'one of those people' through lots of practice, and I still work hard at refining my basic drawing skills. BUT when it comes to fast visualisation and researching viusual details for more involved works, nothing beats some reference of the photographic kind - so I use photo reference too.

I should stress that I never let the reference control the work. I always have a strong plan (often already sketched out) of what I want and the reference usually only helps in some supporting way of details. It also is quite common that I can find no directily relevant pics (such as girls posing with fighting sticks)so I do alot of modify/chop and changing and inventing out of my head to get to the goal.

As an example the image below is what I had for reference of the stick fighting teen pose. As you can see not much in common if you were planning to draw directily from it. I liked the strength, power and stability of 'Karate Girl' but wanted to have a character that was more agile with some teen mischief/energy in her. So I guess the reference was partly a sample of what I didn't want and was equally helpful in aiding me with details like exactily how far apart and the angle her legs should be set at.

...and for the faces in this post my reference included downloading details like individual asian eyes - I just didn't know exactily what features make and an asian eye asian looking! how else am I going to findout? ...stare at asian girls at my local pub?

!

... excuse me, Im off to my local pub.

Very nice concepts dude. The chopsticks through the hat and the armored sandals are a nice touch. The only thing I can think of suggesting is some kind of blade on her weapon to make it seem more menacing. Maybe something like these kama sickles:

[img]http://www.okinawankarateclub.com/images/weapons/kama_demo.jpg[/img]

They look pretty badass to me, that's my two cents anyway. Good job man, keep it up.[;)]

Liking the blue version vs the red in the latest post. The blue seems so much more self sufficient, she sort pulled together her fighting gear from rag raps and common clothing and theres a greater feel of determination to be a great fighter. Red looks more like someone of a higher class learning to become one, cant really tell you why all of this is there. its a gut thing :P I can also understand eagles comments about wanting to put a blade on there but thats a bit of a catch 22 that you dont want lose the feel that she may not have proper training resources to work with but is determined anyway. Sicles and the like might actualy be good for that because it could easily be a farming impliment. Hope some of that made sense, its hard to put into words a feeling and aesthetic sometimes.

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Thu, 15/06/06 - 10:24 PM Permalink

Really like the updates - I'm very much a fan of the red concept. She seems very capable and like MoonUnit says, she looks like someone of an upper class. I think it accentuates the beauty of the fighter without making her overtly sexual. I think the skirt provides more freedom of movement which I imagine would be handy in a fighter character.

I really like this concept because the detail is in the right places. The wraps/halterneck top is simple but the details are excellent on the dress trim, hat trim and the foot protector. The sketch of the footguard looks excellent as well.

One suggestion - stay away from giving her sais/jutte (jitte?) if you go with the red colour scheme as she'll lose a bit of uniqueness and start to look a bit like Elektra.

Looking forward to the model.

Submitted by Johnn on Sun, 25/06/06 - 5:34 AM Permalink

next update(s) - rather than rush into the model I thought I would explore and refine the concept properly (procrastiate). I committed to the design with shorts (I think the other one was equally good but didn't convey the same streetwise/girl-power attitude the initial sketch of this character had) and started to explore variation of her outfit. for a while I was looking to include a a highlight colour and street cred with a bandana, but the faux cammo patchwork pants seemed a more enticing alternative. I couldn't decided which hat was working best until I did the front/back painting and painted a few on (sorry painted over each one, so no alternatives to show).

Currently undecided about the hair - initially thought of a long plat and now thinking hair up in the hat, probably because I don't want to obscure other details on her - not a great reason really...

thinking about a tatoo on her back... but it might take away some girlishness (that I want to keep to some extent)

I'm in for sure, and ready as ever to pull my hair out ;)
Normal mapping should be an interesting challenge.

I've decided to go with this character. Over 50% of his body is hideously burnt beyond repair. I'll probably add bloody bandages into the design, and I also want to experiment with different kinds of armour on the upper body.

Submitted by Bunny on Fri, 09/06/06 - 1:57 AM Permalink

I like the bandage idea, I was gonna use it in one of my old concepts. :) Sounds like fun for normal mapping. He looks like the kind of guy who would rivet armour straight through the burnt flesh...

Submitted by Horror on Sun, 11/06/06 - 2:32 AM Permalink

Here is the model I've been working on. I made the poly budget by 2 whole tiangles :)
This guy is definately a Mortal Kombat character. I'm still debating over what weapon to give him. At the moment I've decided to give him a mace with skulls attached to it and a shield instead of the halberd. There are some things I'll go back and play around with but this is basically how the model will look.

hey turkeyplague, its cool to see some modelling getting done, nice work.

i agree with PeterDavis. you should rethink the poly distrubution, why so many polies on the inside of the hand? why 3 edge loops on the inside of each joint? i think those polies could be better spent elsewhere, the shoulder armor in particular looks pretty low poly in silhouette

Done, and done. :p

Well, ive been thinking about how i would model the tattered clothing, for instance, start with cylinder (h:1 seg: 8) and move edges, or, start with a plane and model it around his neck. at the moment im thinking of the latter, because i definatley want to keep the mesh elements to a minimum, but im also thinking about the process after modelling which would make it easier to unwrap.

Anyway, just some thoughts on which method i should use. Ill throw some mesh up and about in afew days.

Uh, any like request items or suggestions are very welcome. could be cool to throw an easter egg in there or two.

Submitted by caseyjones on Sun, 16/07/06 - 9:26 PM Permalink

I would suggest just blocking him out to get the shape and the proportions of the model. I wouldn't bother about spending days on modelling the head and the scarf and then using like 3000tris on it getting it to look mint the having 3000tris for the rest of the body.
I personally start the model using cylinders for the arms, legs and body. Depending on my budget I usually make them about 6 or 7 sided. But with 6000tris you could probably go as high as 8 or 9... but start low, you can easily add more!
Once you have the shape, then its easy to throw in cuts here and there and move around some verts to get folds and details into the model.
That's just my workflow. It doesn't mean its the best way to go about modelling but it seems to work for me :D
Good luck with it, I'm definately looking forward to seeing this one in 3D.

Well see, i dont so much use the box modelling method, so i use basic objects as a base, and edge extrude from there. Ive already got basic body done (pretty much just a naked man). but i mean, ill delete bits and peices. Im tempted also to make morph targets for the face, just as, something cool to do. Id post the naked guy, but i mean, its pretty boring to look at so i thought there wasnt much point until ive got some cool details going.

Sumea Challenge #8 - Phish

Jumping on this bandwagon for sure!

I'm going for a more traditional japanese feel with this one, with a bit of my own twist.

A oldish japanese madman named 'Shigeru'. Exaggurated oriental look.. white hair, big eyebrows, beard, straw hat. Thin but toned body. Armed with two bladed Tonfas. Upper body bare chested for maximum dexterity when attacking with the Tonfas. Lower body lightly armoured and decorated with japanese style bamboo armours.

He is mysterious and fast upper body fighter, great at blocking.. but vulnerable if you catch him out.

Sumea Challenge #8 - Bunny

Just marking out my territory - don't touch my stuff! [:p]

I'm almost certainly going with the steampunk inventor concept - kind of a travelling professor/adventurer with a honkin great steam-powered arm and a similarly honkin great sword. Got an exam this week so unless I get lazy with revision I probably won't have a concept up for a few days.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Sun, 11/06/06 - 8:00 AM Permalink

Im a wacom newbie too, a lot of fine sumea folk have been helping me out over here: http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3820

On the actual character concept, i want to be honest and say be carefull of working with too many proven methods. Big sword, big boots and a mechanical arm might make a few people frown. I like the idea of a steam punk inventor though so id suggest to keep at the drawing board for the time being and see what you can come up with

Submitted by Bunny on Sun, 11/06/06 - 8:23 PM Permalink

The boots aren't supposed to be that big, my sense of proportion is just crap. [:D] Time permitting I'll do a model sheet with more accurate proportions. Having got this down on paper I'm leaning towards making him a lot finer and skinnier, contrasting with the arm a bit more. I'm still up in the air about the sword, I may give him a rapier or something lighter or even go without and focus on the arm as a weapon. You make a good point about proven methods, but don't draw too much from this sketch, it's pretty poor [;)].

I'm taking a wander through that Wacom thread, good stuff thanks.

Submitted by Bunny on Wed, 14/06/06 - 4:46 AM Permalink

Ghaaa! The evil MoonUnit planted his egg deep in my brain and something nasty will soon emerge... [:p]

I'm ditching the sword, colour and dignity, and hopefully giving him a little more character. Probably won't bother with another concept, more likely I will have a WIP model and character description up shortly. But then again, with my brain gestating something gruesome as we speak, who knows?

Submitted by MoonUnit on Wed, 14/06/06 - 9:12 AM Permalink

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 16/06/06 - 8:49 PM Permalink

Great start Bunny, but MoonUnit and yourself have both pointed out all the things I would have suggested. I would definately agree with losing the sword. STEAM POWERED ARM PWNZ TEH SWORD!
I think you could definately push this concept to great heights, you have more than enough time to do so.
Quick suggestion. If he's an inventor, why not dress him up in some inventor style gear. Labcoat, leather apron, gloves, goggles, crazy hair? I just keep getting images of 'Doc' from Back to the Future III in the wild west with a massive steampunk arm attached.
Looking forward to see what you come up with.

-caseyjones

Submitted by Bunny on Fri, 16/06/06 - 9:04 PM Permalink

That's one reason I'm messing with the concept - I was having trouble reconciling the 17th century costume with the inventor concept, and the style ended up kinda fuzzy. The Wild West idea is doing things to my brain, not what I had in mind but interesting. I'll let it percolate at work tonight and see what bubbles to the surface...

Submitted by J I Styles on Tue, 13/06/06 - 1:20 AM Permalink

yeeahhhh, that's nice and moody. Very sexy. Only thing I'd suggest on the design side is to give him a bit of character and sense of belonging by giving his armour something. An insignia or clan emblem, maybe a mark of his condition (why his eyes are glowy/smokey). Other than that I'd say he's quite rich in character, very cool [:)]

Submitted by farmergnome on Tue, 13/06/06 - 6:38 AM Permalink

Ha yea, i was thinking about a symbol or a unique armor piece, still pondering several options i guess. I wanted him to fit the image of a dishonoured samurai, instead of ending it himself after the events that shamed him, he seeks redemption through a supernatural path, demonic possession, watever, something cool [:)] , anyway things go bad as they generally do, and in no time hes some random evil demons ass-puppet, charging around the earth kicking ass and making babies cry [:D] .

Ha, ok, anyway, visually it should translate that I guess i pictured him as some average soilder, nothing special armor wise, so ill think outside of that, his unique features should be related to the whole possession thing... gah my brain

ok here's my first concept scribble. hes not a werewolf. he's simply hairy and has claws and is quite vicious. but the idea is that he does emulate animalistic fighting forms. so he pounces a lot, crouching, claw swinging and stuff.

how about a leather biker vest - then you got a bit of leather jacket action combined with bare arms. if you have it open at the front you got some pec and ab action to work with too.

heres the 3 main ideas im toying with. i think i prefer the middle one, but i like the idea of the jacket (in both the left and right variants) flailing about when he spins around.

let me know what people think.PeterDavis2006-09-21 07:40:50

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Thu, 08/06/06 - 3:33 AM Permalink

The left one has a cool 'King-of-Fighters' feel to it so I like that one. For some reason, the one on the right makes him look a bit like a homeless person or a bit like the biker/gang member look you said you were trying to avoid. The middle one looks good but a bit 'spandexy'.

My pick is the white one. Nice stuff.

Submitted by PeterDavis on Thu, 08/06/06 - 3:47 AM Permalink

the other option is to combine the sleeved and the black versions, having the jacket over the black tights, but removing the black collar.
not sure about the jacket colour. i was originally aiming for brown, see what happens.

Submitted by Johnn on Thu, 08/06/06 - 4:28 AM Permalink

Submitted by Johnn on Thu, 08/06/06 - 8:46 AM Permalink

nothing is wrong with the miami vice look... aarrrghoo! why do my eyes bleed like that when I lie!

on a more constructive note I think the white jacket might be the pick of the three as far as making a distinctive character goes

Submitted by MoonUnit on Thu, 08/06/06 - 10:36 PM Permalink

Personally im a fan of the "spandexy" version, especially in black and red. Its just cut real well, then again im a marvel fanatic. Failing that i actually woulda combined it with the sleeveless and cut the colar off one of them. The jacket just takes away from the whole primal aspect for me.

Submitted by PeterDavis on Fri, 09/06/06 - 12:07 AM Permalink

hrm. its tricky. i like the jacket but i also think the arms would look really cool normal mapped. the jacket could also.....arg

Submitted by Johnn on Fri, 09/06/06 - 12:39 AM Permalink

the fact that there is much indecision regarding your concept probably means that it ain't working on some basic level for ya (or us) - I recommend that you start a-fresh rather than attempting to fix fundamental short commings with cosmetic changes. I don't necessarly mean throw the baby and the bath water out though. but maybe revisiting your base sketch from a new angle will provide a more satisfactory path to follow. Doing this might also highlight aspects of your current concept that are not quite jelling at the moment - so keep the option of then returning to this one and pushing it forward open... hope that made sense

Submitted by PeterDavis on Fri, 09/06/06 - 2:27 AM Permalink

im going to take a crack at adapting the middle concept. something still makes me think thats my favourite

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 09/06/06 - 10:06 PM Permalink

Yeah, I quite like the middle one too for some reason, but the jacket just reminds me of a character you'd find in a fighting game like Street Fighter or Fatal Fury or something. Keep pushing the ideas and you'll get something you'll like.

Off to a good start. The face looks pretty well built. Something about the side view makes his eyes look a little strange. Maybe their too high up?
Anyway as for the hair its looking good but extended the very bottom part of the hair outward more, like what you've done with the planes.
Keep it up :)

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 30/06/06 - 1:55 AM Permalink

Yeah, the eyes are looking a little... wrong?
I think they are spread a little too far out. You don't have a front render so its hard to tell, but from the perspective one it looks a little too wide, maybe bring them in just slightly.
Also, you cut down a fair few polys on the face. He seems to have a lot going on around his mouth, which is fair enough if you plan on having facial deformation. If not, you could cut down a lot!
Other than that, great start to the model.

Submitted by PeterDavis on Fri, 30/06/06 - 2:49 AM Permalink

these are shot of how the face looks like now, also the same as in the 2nd progress shot. so there was some tweaking thats harder to see with all the hair.

ill think about the mouth, i think its just old habits really making sure that the mouth and edge loops are clean. if i were to change things there, id leave it until i model the rest of the character. i may not need to, and itll mean that the character can have facial deformations later on if i want.

Working an idea around. She's a dominatrix of demons and such. Not too sure about the composition of her demonic aura, so i just drew some bric a brac, I originally wanted them to wrap around her form like tattoos.
Her get-up is quite simple, i think something like this could get too busy if it wasnt..

At the moment it done by adding a noise modifer and adjusting various setting. I got a bit bored with modelling and want to do some test rigging and animations.

CONCEPT2

TAURUS, he's a gladiator inspired from that dude that russel crowe killed in the movie,
cant remember his name, but for some reason hes turning out very similar to
the mummy fighter dude from darkstalkers.

i havent decided on the weapon,
as i ran out of space on the paper i didnt bother drawing it as yet,
im thinking along the lines of an axe or a mace, or maybe even a finger shaped poking stick
lol

The second concept is a valkyrie named Edith,
once a protector of God, she was banished due to her jealousy to mankind
she is the wielder of the Longinus, the mythical spear that pierced Christ.

anyway, c&c are most welcome
feel free to suggest alternatives for the weapon too

Great image. Really like the linework in the image and your character gives off a real sense of bulk and power. Really like the goddess image on the shield, or is it a bracer/buckler?

Maybe a half-moon axe for the weapon so something with a different weapon at each end - eg, a crook for hooking their legs and a bludgeoning weapon at the other end? For some reason, this guys weapon looks like it'd be a bludgeoning weapon. Something that'd break bones as opposed to cleaving someone in half.

Very cool design.

Submitted by Bunny on Fri, 09/06/06 - 1:07 AM Permalink

Nice! I can't put my finger on it but something definitely reminds me of that particular Gladiator character - if you're sticking to that influence maybe go with a chrome finish on the armour?

Something about the proportions doesn't look quite right, especially around the neck and shoulders. I think his pecs are coming together a little too high as well. I'm not sure, it could just be the helmet and the neck guard thingy are confusing me - I'm easily confused.

The finger shaped poking stick is a mighty weapon of terror to be sure.

Bunny - Hehe all's good. Once I start the model maybe its easier to see,
in the mean time, GO THE FINGER SHAPED POKING STICK OF DEATH!!!!!!!!

caseyjones - Thanks man, I can't wait either. ZBrush ing this character should be great.

Submitted by Johnn on Sat, 10/06/06 - 12:51 AM Permalink

nice concept and clearly illustrated. My initial thought that it looked Greek Mythology inspired with dose on Ancient Egyptian rather than Roman gladiator. The character you referred to in the movie is, I suspect, Greek inspired, so you must ahve captured a good about of the right features

Regarding the Egyptian aspect (beard style, angular neck guard and hair detail) I think the character would benefit from a remodel of these elements to fit more with the Greek Myth stylin' ...but just my personal opinion - other might disagree.

Bunny commented on the pec too - they are not attached correctly to the arms - would be good to see that detail corrected as his barrel chest is a focus of the design.

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Sat, 10/06/06 - 1:08 AM Permalink

I really like the Egyptian flavour - IMO you should stick with it. Greek and Roman stylings have been done to death and done really well (see God of War). Besides, in those days, the Mediterranean and Greek/Roman empire had a lot to do with each other.

Submitted by silvermirage on Sat, 10/06/06 - 3:41 AM Permalink

JohnN - yeah, the pecs does look a bit off, i didn't notice at first,
anyhow, can;t be bothered fixing it. rather im working on another completely different concept
this time its a female fighter, i'll decide which ones best before commencing modeling.

Submitted by Johnn on Sat, 10/06/06 - 4:04 AM Permalink

fair call by JonathanKerr - maybe it could be pushed toward Egyptian more(?). And good to hear you're producing another option too. I think some others might have committed to their first idea too quickly could find themselves with 'design delemmas' in a month or so.

The nunchucks work well since it looks like you've got a good grip on posing with them -- as long as you can keep that dynamic feel to it, the nunchucks would rock.

You know, the body and sense of weight and proportion youve got going on here is not that bad, dont be so hard on yourself. the silhoette is pretty good just watch for pure 90 extrusions as they will give you a bit of grief when you normal map your model.

The face is the area that needs the most work to me - Eyes are the windows to any person soul so giving them really good shape will make a dramatic difference to her persona - dont be afraid to find reference and use it, in fact I'd encourage you greatly to find some pics of anime styled 3d game characters and put them next to yours so you can play 'spot the difference'. Its something I do alot when modelling.

Hope that helps some - keep at it [:)]

Your model has come out looking really nice Neffy, but my only real crit would be that with comparing your concept to the model. The concept looked a little more slender or perhaps taller. Your character's hips and butt are no where near as wide as they are in the model. She gained weight!
Don't get me wrong, you may have decided to change the proportions in the modelling stages but it was the thing that stuck out the most with me.

This is looking really cool. The first time I saw your concept, I thought I could see so much of the Fable main character in it, but now seeing the style you've brought to it in your modelling skill, it's definitely taken on a distinct characteristic of its own.

Good work!

Submitted by Neffy on Sun, 16/07/06 - 10:53 PM Permalink

Thankyou for the positive replies everyone

John: I guess big spikes on your shoes are really heavy, I might rotate her a tad bit forward to try and fix that. As for the body suit, it?s my favorite part of the design so I don?t know if I could bring my self to get rid of it.

Casey: Unfortunately I cant convey much realism in my concepts and my models always look different, I just cant draw how I want them to look. In the end it just ends up being a combination of styles depending on my mood or the stock images I view I can?t control it, it just happens and then that?s how it is. Thanks for the avatar solution I swear I looked at that post at one stage.

Savarn: I always try to add my own flavor and style to my art, so I?m glad to hear I?ve achieved that in the end. However I?m a bit baffled as to how my modern Japanese assassin chick looks like a medieval fantasy British man with a huge sword. The Fable art was drawn in an anime style so I guess it holds similarity there, its actually a compliment to hear that my scribbly attempts at anime is comparable to such fantastic professional work like Fable.

Submitted by Savarn on Sun, 16/07/06 - 11:32 PM Permalink

I think it was just the build of the gloves shoes, the way the pants go out at the bottom and the way the sleeves are rolled up that reminded me of some of the models (not concept art for fable), but not that much looking back at it. It was just a passing feeling I got from your first concept piece.

Sorry I thought I'd better add that it's definitely NOT in any bad way that it reminded me of it, I think you've got a truely original design, my passing glace may have just been that if you've played fable that maybe you take a little influence in your art style from such games, something that I sometimes try and produce intentionally when I've tried to come up with designs for my Graphic Design work when a client wants it to look a "certain way" while still keeping some originality.

Submitted by GuyBrave on Sat, 29/07/06 - 10:39 AM Permalink

Clean looking model dude! Post up some wires?
You have heaps more tris to play with, so why not use them up. Maybe some more planes around the ankles, so when you alpha map the leaves (or fur/cloth/straw), you can have a few layers of it. Maybe throw a few on the beard as well to bushy it up a little.
I think you could push this model just a little further with a bit more detailing. Maybe some more bone jewellery?

I think the upper body looks small because of the waist band, looks cool though and I think it should make a great model, if you use Rembrandt's colour pallet on the texture it could look very impressive too.

A sheild I feel would over complicate this guy since the single two handed weapon works very well for him and realy fits the fighting genre, I think it takes a special character to weild a weapon and sheild combo, see soul calibur.
But who knows that is just my initial opinion, for all I know it could have some awesome sheild in the end and still look great.

Just updating my concept. I?ve never spend much time with my tablet, but some of the work on this forum is truly inspirational, and from now on I?m gonna spend more time sketching. I just love how dynamic these quick drawings are. Thanks!picpoc2006-09-22 23:34:13

neat work Artur, I really like your concept idea.

holy cow,
thats just mad
how long did you spend rendering this image?

Submitted by picpoc on Fri, 09/06/06 - 7:02 PM Permalink

oh, about 3-4 hours, I can't really draw but i can (sort of) paint, so that's why i've done this. as i said, gonna try sketching quick, line based figures from now on, it seems to be more fun.

Submitted by palantir on Fri, 09/06/06 - 8:33 PM Permalink

That's a great painting, really brings the concept to life. Such an original design, the finished model should end up looking pretty ace.

I wasn't a real big fan of this concept, but now that I've seen it painted its made me have second thoughts! Great job dude!

Hi guys, it?s time for another update, but this time I need your feedback. I?m sort of lost on proportions. I?m aiming for slightly exaggerated real proportions, (athletic looking character) but been playing around and don?t really know what looks good and what?s not anymore, can u help? ?and it?s about 4500 tris now

heya picpoc,
thats a cool looking low poly
i understand that you want to exaggerate the proportions a bit
but my feedback is to consider enlarging the waist line slightly
he looks too overly slim on the mid part

but anyway, looking great man, cant wait to see the high poly details

I think i'm done with this low poly model. it's 5998 polyspicpoc2006-09-22 23:32:37

Sumea Challenge #8 - poppin fresh - CH#12

Okay I have re-organised my thread, I am trying to keep to the high standards set by the rest of you.

Last update: 02/10/06

Ok final entry,D.Dekker in his 3d form.
1 Broken graphics card and countless other events have not stood in my way, so here is the slightly rushed final piece, lots of stuff I would like to fix on it still and I wish I had more of a chance to post my progress. My internet is shaped so I hope it is fast enough for me to upload in time.

Sumea Entry for 2006- Work in progress.
Character title: D.Dekker (The Dread Pirate)
Description: Giant muscle bound pirate with a cannon and hook replacing his missing arm.

Concept Story Illustrations:
Here is some of the backstory stuff I did just on my own whims.

You've obviously enjoy the pirate idea more, but I personally would have take the Mexican wrestler avenue. Just find them more interesting than pirates I guess.
Great start all the same!

Submitted by poppin fresh on Sun, 04/06/06 - 6:32 AM Permalink

Yeah concept wise but from a model perspective I can find myself doing far more interesting things with an over the top pirate character.

You stole my pirate idea dean!

Submitted by JonathanKerr on Tue, 06/06/06 - 2:41 AM Permalink

I think the wrestler idea is much more in the vein of the fighting game theme for this challenge. I haven't seen many martial arts characters so far, strange considering the theme. The pirate is a bit more 'way out' and has been done in a bit more often eg - Guilty Gear (can't think of the name), World Heroes Perfect (Captain Kidd), Soul Calibur (Cervantes) among others. Lucha Libre characters show up in Virtua Fighter 5 (unreleased) and Dead or Alive 4 but there's something quite exciting and unique about smaller, more athletic wrestlers who throw themselves around with reckless abandon. I think you could really go nuts with the wrestler.

Mitch you didn't invent pirates, Lucas Arts did with Monkey Island.

In regards to what seems to be my less popular choice well all I can say is while the wrestler may be a cool character at the end of the day I am making the model not the real fighting character and I think I will find more personal challenge in doing a highly detailed un-masked buff pirate, I have never done a beefy male model before so I like the idea of it and the fact that pirates have been in fighting games before is a fairly big non issue with me since mexican wrestlers have too (DOA4).
End of the day I find him a fitting over the top fighting character who I can realy make fit the fighting game part, cliche much? Sure but fighting game characters are on the whole highly cliche, thats why we all love them.

Also I have already started on the mesh :)

*UPDATE*
Okay been a while but I have recently gotten a job (and been sick with an ear infection) so I have had no time to think let alone work on this but now things have settled down a bit.
I am working on 3d architectual visualisations so it is good to stop looking at buildings and get back to anatomy.

So yes I have been playing with my lowpoly mesh a bit when I have gotten chances and doing sketches in my lunch break at work.
No sketches to go up right now but I want to scan in some of my other concepts soon since I am rather ashamed of the quicky I have up now.

The character design has been updated:
I have aged him.
Given him a nice little pointy beard to draw his face out and make him look more cooky.
Finalised his hook design which is now a canon arm to fire the hook on a chain.
Removed the peg leg since it was a little overkill.
Have been working on his tattoo designs which are now based on oceanic cartography which should look realy interesting and have a very traditional feel.

I have a backstory written up and I want to include little thumbnail comic panels with it so stay tuned for that:)

So yeah too much talk here is the current low poly mesh:

Here is my high poly that I started this afternoon:
[IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/poppinfreshly/dekker_high.jpg[/I…]

Would love any tips on it as this is the first bulky male I have worked on.

Lookin great, Im a BIG fan, BIG BIG fan.
Good progress you have here, straight into the model and no stuffing around.

I was a big fan of the peg leg, but I can see why you thought it was overkill. It?s a very clich?d pirate feature. Still though, aren?t those clich?d features what made pirates what they are today, I know your skill level and I?m sure you could bring that peg of a leg to the table with some new ideas.
*I keep thinking of him jumping on people with that peg leg and crushing their bones with a force never before seen in a man!*

Also I?m just wondering have you thought about adding any jewellery?

Again it's looking great; I would definitely select him in a fighting game over Kilic, keep up the good work!

- Stefan

Submitted by poppin fresh on Fri, 04/08/06 - 7:13 PM Permalink

Thanks Stefan for the kind words, you really should come to Brisbane for the conference if you get a chance.
Yeah there are pros and cons to the peg leg, in the end it just didn't seem to work :(
As for jewellery I was planning for some to start with but then I moved away from that idea, will see how it goes but I am thinking to keep it more minimal functional pirate (with a giant hook) but I am again contemplating some trinkets.

Anyway update time, I have sorted it all out so my thread can be as tidy as all you other great people, you may notice I have posted a few images as a kind of backstory to my character since I got a little carried away with the concept, now thats out of the way (and I am also well again) I can get back to the model.

Well I am all inspired after catching up on all the other work you guys have posted so I am hoping to get some sit down time working on the model soon so that I can post lots of scary pirate pics.

Tonight is the IGDA catch-up in Brisbane so I hope to see a few of you there, I wont be able to attend the start but will certainly show up later in the night, see you then.

My apologies for my late entry (guess I am too late by now) have been trying to submit but alas internet woes.

Well here he is plenty rushed but done so I can get to work on something else.

D.Dekker has cost me one graphics card so the first thing I will do now is upgrade my machine in time for next year.

Good to be a part of it and I wish I could have updated more often and gotten helpful advice but since most of mine was done in the last few days I had no time to post realy.

I am realy blown away by some of these entrys, best year ever?

Sumea Challenge #8 ? XY01

Awsome, sounds like a great breif. Just so happens i was lucky enough to find a capcom concept art book at the market not long ago which should help. This will be my first sumea modelling challenge and judging by the past ones it looks that the standards are pretty high so I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
Good luck everyone and happy modelling.
*will post concepts soon*

Been doing some late night scribbling and came up with a female fighter with a bit of a medium armour knight feel to her. She has large blades attached to her elbow plateing and a long thin cape like thing of plate mail down her back. She would be a close range melee type with mainly upper body combo's, hence the heavy armour and elbow blades. Any ideas thoughts and crits welcomed. :)

Hey,
After giving my first concept a go I figured it was going to be kind of hard to get the detail i wanted with the poly limit so i decided to go for a different approach.

So I developed a concept for a tribal warrior with some heavy body mods like large spikes, big plugs and a few tattoos. From my knowledge a lot of the pacific tribal warriors dress was about scaring off the enemy so the aim was to make this guy look traditional and believable as well as pushing the limits of realit and making him a scary adversary.

Any suggestions are appreciated, especially to do with topology im really trying to work on my layout.

Sumea Challenge #8 ? Palantir

I?m in. Looking forward to learning normal mapping.
I?m a little busy for the next few weeks finishing off some uni work, but then I?ll get stuck into some modelling. In the mean time I?ll try to work out a concept.

Here?s my initial concept:

//Edit - nah, don't like this idea now.

//Edit - Nope, don't like any of these ideas either

Submitted by palantir on Fri, 23/06/06 - 2:54 AM Permalink

Yay, the uni semester is over, now I can do fun stuff for a while like make game art!

I?ve figured out my concept:
Former professional female bodybuilder turned street fighter thanks to ?roid rage. She likes flamboyant moves with lots of high kicks and power-punches, she?s a bit of a show off pulling bodybuilding flexes before and after fights, and she has no qualms using dirty tactics with her knife-throwing special moves. She tends to get angry easily.
