Sumea Modeller Challenge

Description

This is where you'll find all the details and contestants for the Sumea Modeller challenges!

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D - IronhideNT - Challenger15

Hey,

First off, apologies. I haven't been posting my progress. I've just been slowly plodding along learning things and well, plain lazy to start posting. But that's my loss.

Here's a recent render of my survival horror character. It's an aquatic survival horror character taking inspiration from a boat scene I saw in an RE4 movie. This guy would be prowling around with the big boss monster dudes.

Anyway, I know it's late, but I hope I can finish it, I got a lot of assignments to do, but anyway.

As usual any comments or critiques are appreciated!

Thanks!

I have a question.
Where can I learn to texture like that?

Submitted by Kalescent on Mon, 13/09/04 - 10:59 AM Permalink

Texture flats section reads 1 x 1024x1024 OR 2 x 512x512. Should be 1 x 1024x512 no ?

Submitted by souri on Mon, 13/09/04 - 11:22 AM Permalink

Whoops.. yep, it is. (fixing it up now)

Submitted by souri on Tue, 14/09/04 - 3:37 AM Permalink

Flat shaded with edges turned on seems to be the better option at viewing the model so yep, everyone do that for #1 and #3 please!

Submitted by dangerdave on Wed, 15/09/04 - 8:11 PM Permalink

souri do we post concepts in as well with the submission ?

Submitted by souri on Thu, 16/09/04 - 12:44 AM Permalink

Nah, concept isn't required...

Submitted by MoonUnit on Thu, 16/09/04 - 7:13 AM Permalink

is the money shot a nescicity?

Submitted by Danmill on Thu, 16/09/04 - 9:47 PM Permalink

Ok call me stupid but i'm not sure what a screen grab is. Above you said "screen grab (not rendered)". Does this mean a "print screen". Err... To put it another way. What's the difference between a "screen grab" and a render?

Submitted by goodgod on Fri, 17/09/04 - 12:20 PM Permalink

for the left front back and all that, should we olny use a flat coloured background?

Submitted by souri on Fri, 17/09/04 - 1:50 PM Permalink

Yes, flat colour background only...

Screengrab means you grab the picture straight out of the viewport of your 3d program, with the print screen key and paste/assemble in your paint program.. However, I've noticed that only 1 of the 3 finishers so far have complied with that rule, and I pretty much don't see the real need for it to be a viewport shot, so you can render those angles if you like. I have adjusted the guidelines and will let that challenger know so he can update if he wants to....

Submitted by Thardswrothe on Fri, 17/09/04 - 1:52 PM Permalink

Hey Souri, ummm... As far as the "Three Quarter View and Close" Shot ... Ummm.... My char kinda has 2 fronts (see: http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2087&whichpage=2)... like 2 bodies... is it possible to do a close up front of both sides? I guess you probably don?t want people adding many more images so I assume I will fit both into the same pic? Heh?sorry to be such a hassle = Oh, also, if we were to upload a video of our characters to our own servers would it be permitted to have a link to it?

Submitted by souri on Fri, 17/09/04 - 2:00 PM Permalink

Yeh, I guess that'll be fine in your case..

You can link to your video in the forum, but the judges won't be able to see it. Due to the number of submissions expected, I'll be preparing all the entries in a neat and tidy single PDF file for them to download. So they won't be visiting each of your forum threads (well, they can, but it would just take too long to go through every page for each entry).

Submitted by LiveWire on Sat, 18/09/04 - 3:27 AM Permalink

One thing I?ve noticed: originally you said that you need to state if you used and photo-sourcing in the textures, yet you have not included anything in the submission guide regarding this and I haven?t seen anyone listing photo-sourced materials in their entries.

Just figured I'd better ask about this before the comp closes and everyone puts up entries without info on their photo-sourcing.

Submitted by souri on Sat, 18/09/04 - 3:39 AM Permalink

You're absolutely right.. I've made the appropriate adjustments...

Submitted by goodgod on Sat, 18/09/04 - 5:35 AM Permalink

What kind of lighting is permitted in the textured renders?

Submitted by Thardswrothe on Sun, 19/09/04 - 9:37 AM Permalink

Good point goodgod. What kind of rendering limitations do we have as far as the rendered money shot? Are we to just keep it clean and simple, like a game screenshot? I thought that was the case, but from the looks of the money shots that are up there it would seem we can do anything as far as rendering effects. Heh, sorry for complicating things once again Souri, but it?d be usefull to know [:)]

Submitted by rannyroy on Sun, 19/09/04 - 6:18 PM Permalink

I was just thinking the same thing. When you said "go for it" id assumed anything goes, ie. volumetric lighting, ambient falloff and ambient occlussion.
Not that ill be attempting any of those suckers.
As Gauguin said, the deadlines almost up, theres no time Toulouse.

i can hear your lafter from here.

Submitted by shath on Mon, 20/09/04 - 12:01 AM Permalink

do we have to sumit if we photosourced

Submitted by souri on Mon, 20/09/04 - 5:40 AM Permalink

The profile and quarter view shots should be rendered, like you said, clean and simple. I'd suggest something ambient, rather than going crazy like having a blue light shine from the back, harsh light top front etc.. It's just to let the judges see your texturing efforts and your models anatomy/proportions etc. Go nuts with the lighting in the money shot.

If you photosourced, then please write some text in the money shot picture, like "photosourcing used..", and maybe something brief on the extent on your photosourcing if you like.

Submitted by Me109 on Mon, 20/09/04 - 7:45 AM Permalink

900x 600 is really tricky to make 3 views of my model fit.. its too fat and wide....[xx(]

Submitted by souri on Mon, 20/09/04 - 8:56 AM Permalink

You may have to be a bit creative on how you it all in if it's like that.. maybe some overlap, repositioning etc..

Just over an hour to go!!

Submitted by souri on Mon, 20/09/04 - 10:19 AM Permalink

There sure are a lot of you submitting in the last minute. Apart from White tip (soon to be Challenger #26) and Dangerdave who's having trouble attching files atm, is there anyone else?

Submitted by souri on Mon, 20/09/04 - 11:19 AM Permalink

Ok, deadline is over, and entries are closed. Just waiting on 1 requested picture from whiteip, and for Tojo to sort out his stuff.. I've downloaded all the entries and will be putting everything into the pdf and sending it to the judges once they're in. Currently stands at 27 challengers, by far our most successful challenge yet.

As usual, it takes time for the judges to go through all the entries and give comments, so please be patient. Besides, there's a bit of time before 3DS Max 7 is released, so you shouldn't mind too much [:)]

you could almost complete a game with the quality assets created here! it could be a survival horror game that you are actually one of our creatures running around trying to survive from humans,,,

Sumea Challenge #6 - 3D - Idaho - Challenger #25

My idea is an escaped loonybin patient. He will be wearing a torn straight jacket rather than the 'toga' outfit that he is currently sporting. Anywho! I know im a late entrant but Ive made a good start on him in 2 hours tonight.

Submitted by Idaho on Wed, 15/09/04 - 7:34 AM Permalink

Picpoc_ I really hope so! Ive just been hammered by a client to finish two images by friday but I will hopefully unwrap and texture on the weekend. No matter if i dont finish on time, i think he has potential to make it into my portfolio so i dont want to rush him too much.

Cheers!

A pity, this guys was looking pretty gross!(A good thing in a horror context!!) But yeah, if you want it in your portfolio than you dont want to rush him. Well good luck either way, it'll be cool to see him whenever he's finished.

Submitted by palantir on Wed, 22/09/04 - 7:15 PM Permalink

Good work, Idaho. [:)] I?m happy to see that you got it finished.
I love the final render ? while simple in concept, it?s got a certain gritty realism to it that really adds atmosphere.

I wouldn?t like to bump into him in a dark corridor of a mental ward!

Goodluck!!

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- picpoc - Challenger #1

Hi guys.
I?m a bit late, but was busy before and didn?t have time to do anything. I just finished project that I was working on and with two weeks to go I thought I?d join the competition. (Not sure if I?ll manage to finish). I?m attaching a concept art for my character. I have also started modeling and soon should put some renders on.
The character: It?s a human that is hosting an alien creature. The body is just muscles and bones, and the alien is sort of vine attached to the man like a leech. The character should be fast and easy to kill.

Hi picpoc, the model looks great. i am looking forward to seeing it textured!

Submitted by Me109 on Tue, 14/09/04 - 8:42 PM Permalink

considering the concept, I reckon yourve done a good job texturing.. technically maybe you couldve use your texture space better, but its layed out fine.. I think you, since its a fleshy dude, make parts of his body look more rotten, he's got a really freshly skinned look going on (really red). Rotten parts can look all kinds of sick colors, like greys etc.. just an idea thou :)

Submitted by Idaho on Wed, 15/09/04 - 2:04 AM Permalink

nice work, i think all your texture needs is a spec map. which should bring up more of the muscular detail and leave him looking more "moist and lifelife" moist ewww its such a yuk word isnt it.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Wed, 15/09/04 - 4:59 AM Permalink

also a higher quality render would help

me109 you're right. I could have used my space better. about the rotten look, it's somethink i have tried to avoid, the idea was to create creature that's fast and athletic and not zombi like one. (but now i wish i did different concept for this)

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- pk - Challenger #2

Hi all... this is the first time that ive posted anything, but ive decided that i might have time to enter this comp after all (hopefully). Anyway, here is a bit of a spiel for my character...
He is a boss-type (although starting to look more like a 2nd in command) mysterious character that i think could fit into either resident evil or silent hill. He is a satanic cult leader (i call him Kult!!!) who works out how to gain control over the terror around him (whether it is the mutations and zombies in racoon city or the nightmares of silent hill). I started modelling him the other day, currently at about 7000 polys and will hopefully get a chance to finish him this week at the poly count of 8000-8500 (and on with the unwrap and texture). I will send in a screenshot or 2 this week.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Mon, 06/09/04 - 12:00 AM Permalink

phew looking good, not sure how survival/horror it is though

Submitted by pk on Fri, 10/09/04 - 12:42 AM Permalink

Ive just started texturing my character,i have also attached the unwrap(2x512). I also have increase the count to 8324,as I have put in eyeballs that will be animated, as the rest of the head is set up for lipsyncing/expressions.

Moonunit, addressing your comment on if it is 'survival horror'. In survival horror games there are more than just the creatures that you kill or kill you, but there are other human or human-like characters that you interact with or turn into some huge creature that you end up killing. This is my character, who is the mysterious type character that mutates or 'whatever' later in the game. At the moment, scare factor is probably minimal but hopefully you will see what I have in mind once it is textured (if i get it done on time).

im done... total polycount ended up being 8328. I know i probably could have used my space in the unwrap a bit better.
I also used the alpha channel of the tga maps in the opacity slot. In the screenshots the opacity shows up as white. But you can see how it looks in the renders that i sent yesterday.

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- whitetip - Challenger #26

Racoon City goal. Many prisoners die of starvation in cells when guards fail to turn up to work. The townspeople have been infected by the 'T-virus'. Inmate A91-B7L011 is witness to the slow agonising death of his cell mates. He manages to stay alive with some supplies hidden in the cell.

Days later there is movement in the darkness of the prison, noises and groaning that are unnatural. The stench of bloated corpses is overpowering. There are rats now, strange rats with dead eyes. The blood does not flow or dribble as you might expect when they are stomped on, but is solid, thick and lifeless. They come looking for a meal but are slow, feeble and an easy target.

The bodies that have been inanimate and decaying for days are now moving! They stumble around fighting to get out of their prison cells. It is the first time inmate A91 has been glad to be locked up.

The rats do not stop and are in huge numbers as they feast upon the flesh all around. They constantly attack and eventually inmate A91 falls. The rats tear at his flesh. As they feed upon him, he can do nothing but scream. The virus takes effect quickly. The dead eyes open...

The electric cell doors sping open... the secondary power generator is offline. The inmates are free now. Free to search for their first meal as the walking dead...

This guy is a monster you might run into at the early stage of the game. A bit normal compared to some other things you might come across in later stages of the game but nice and decayed and freaky in a zombie way. The leg chains would slow him down to a lurch. The arm chains are his melee weapon.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

First might I say thanks for the great comp. It got me learning 3D again.

This is the final model. It is a bit messy and imperfect but hey it was a good learning experiance for me. The concept has changed a little. The uniform is grey now, i wanted more of a contrast with the bloody/fleshy bit. I did not include the chains as i did not see why a person locked in a cell would have them on.

The photos were sourced from a book and digital photos I took. The book was the Collins Eyewitness Science: Human Body. The brain, ribs and leg muscle images were from the book. I combined them with the photos of myself in photoshop and painted over them.

Thanks for the help posting the pics Souri!

Sumea Challenge 6 - Rannyroy - Challenger #5

Hi to everyone on the board,
Ive been a spectator on sumea for a while and realised its about time I put my 2 cents in. It might be pushing it to have a final model by the close date but here goes.

My original for my concept for horror is the idea of being invaded by a parasite and eaten from the inside out. Im interested in the hell that the host goes through as the bloodsuckers tenticles crawl under his skin and his insides get slowly sucked out from behind.
He'd be one of the incidental characters you met earlier in the game or perhaps one of your team that became infected, begging desperatly for help.
But in reality theres only one thing thatll save him.

Im not totally happy with the concept as I feel it needs exitemnet, its not that the undead arnt bed wetting enough but he looks to much like a zombie at the mo. I might bring the pariste inside as if the host were worn like a coat or maybe even a hat :)

its looking very good at this atage, i think it has got a fair amount of individuality, although i agree as you mentioned that the parasite could do with some more development to really make it stand out. looking forward to the model

Heres a basic early mesh.
Im just having abit of trouble getting the idea on paper so ive kept it fairly loose and until I commit to a final concept sometime this week.

Blimey, Im sure not winning on the popularity stakes, but I guess posting a human figure isnt exactly goin to have everyone drooling.
Thanks for the love, Con and moon.

Hes a sketch I gave a quick paint up to help refine the idea. Ill do one more after this as I still think its a little boring. More tentalce and bulges under the skin are probably the go.

How it works:
The parasite is ingestet and is incubated in the liver. As it grows its tentacles spread out under the skin to the majour organs so it can use the hosts lungs, heart, blood and bowel etc. The larger it gets the more energy it needs and until the host can no longer produce enough for 2, thats when the parasite must look for food. IT expands, ripping the host two so that mouth/extended stomach is at the surface.
Thats the point when the human loses contol of their body and can only watch in horror as the monster takes over..

Funnything is that there are real life parasites that do eat you from the inside out, so if your in Africa dont eat raw fish.

Ive refined the basic mesh and thatl do for tonight. The next stage will be to add more tetacles then detail the hands and feet until the poly limits reached. My concept was for scrawny limbs but im gonna have a play with the limbs and see if i can add more weight to the figure.
Then its my favourite part. UV's :(

Ranny don't worry too much about not getting many replies to your topic, I think everyone's feeling a bit overwhelmed with the number of submissions for this comp and is having trouble keeping track of them all.

My 2 cents, looking at your wires I can see a lot of wasted polys in his shorts which could be better used for adding details such as the straps around his chest and arms. Otherwise looking fine.

Submitted by rannyroy on Tue, 07/09/04 - 3:56 AM Permalink

Okay. Its abit of a jump since last post but heres afew viewport screengrabs with a slightly higher texture res than final.
After a bit of messing about adding tenticles I decided it would be quiker to remodel the leg and arm rather than continue and cut into a degrading mesh. Ive tried to take over the right hand side of his body leaving the left fairly normal so I can have a contrast in texture and size making him A symetrical.
I still have alot to do but i couldnt resist a quick pose.

Your comments and crits are appreciated.

hes looking great so far, that tentacle thing on his arm is a bit confusing though. And the blood is like in streaks and looks like its been done with an airbrush down his leg/arm. Other then that, good work :D

Submitted by rannyroy on Tue, 07/09/04 - 6:09 AM Permalink

Mnnn I see what you mean. Its funny, thats the bit of the model/texture i was most happpy with, the tenticles under the skin bulging under the flesh etc. bit I can see NOW that its not working quite how id imagined.
Thanks for the imput... dam, blast, rats, tsk :)

Submitted by denz on Tue, 07/09/04 - 8:23 AM Permalink

awsome concept :)

I think the mummy type skin comes across well aswell. Some of the bloody areas like the split in the head could use some definition though :)

Maybe give us another view of those hooks cos I can't really make them out like Moonunit said. Although I like the bloody leg.

Submitted by rannyroy on Sat, 11/09/04 - 9:23 PM Permalink

The hook things are "in progress" tenticels that have burst throught the skin in the hand. If i have time id like to give them little mouths and have one coming out the brain head but im cutting it fine for final sub as it is.
I had a quick crack at animating him as the rig's all there.
It's literally 5 minutes work just to see what hed look like.

Sumea Challenge #6 - 3D -nsb

Hey

Was searching through some topics at ausgamers.com and came by this site/comp.... looks like a great 3d community to get involved in. Entering the comp abit late so I dont really have the time for a kewl design boss like creature so I'm doing a civilian turned zombie. Dunno if I'll get it done but I'm mainly a high poly artist(sub-dee, nurbs) so this comp is good motivation to get some low poly stuff in my folio.

heres my first set of image... they were modeled tonight. FOr the head I just modelled his face normal with abit of character and then zombiefied it :P -not finished I'll add more detail after the bod is done and I know how many polys I have to spare.. Maybe even hair.

Next is a basic layout of the body... I would still be modelling him but I'm unsure about his clothes design - Like.. maybe he will be a hick villager turned zombie(inspired by the resident evil 4 trailer), a swat member turned zombie... something liek that I have to decide tmmr.

And yer, I've checked about afew threads.. they all rock!! really like the silent hill inspired works... I've been a fan since no.1 on the PS1 and cant wait to get my hand on SH4! Was gonna buy the Japanese version when I heard it had english on it, but the AUS release is next month anywayz.

Newayz.. dont think I'm going to be able to finish the comp cos the freelace job is taking up all my spare time :(. After i first posted i asked some friends for crits-"its crap, zombies have been done to death. Try something new" I sorta agreed and tryed to go the sillenthill/resident boss style..didnt really work out too well heh (images):

LOL!!!! [:D] That?s gotta be the scariest thing a man could face!

Considering the mouth (it really does look vagina-like), the phallic arms are a pretty good idea. Seriously! Just don?t make them too phallic.

Submitted by matias on Thu, 16/09/04 - 11:19 PM Permalink

Looks pretty good, one thing I would suggest is maybe to make his feet a little bigger, just to give him a sort of wider base to balance his big arms and torso, at the moment they look a bit small to support him properly, but not drasticly so. But otherwise pretty cool.

Sumea Challenge #6 - 3D - Azazel

Okay, so my basic conclusion for a survival horror creature was that it something on it had to move/open up/shoot out, etc. This basically comes from watching The Thing one too many times. Part of the appeal (for me at least) was that the creature always had an ace up it's sleeve when it came to what it could do and how it looked. I've tried to do that here by hiding tentacle arms down it's own throat so it might look like it has a semi-normal head until everything slides out(probably in some sort of cut scene for maximum impact).

So far I'm happy with the head designs that I've got but the body's giving me some grief mainly because I haven't really decided how I want it to move or ig there's anything else I want it to do besides the splitting head trick. Right now I'm leaning towards some sort of biped/quadraped but I'm wondering if I want to be something that runs along the ground at high speed or if it should clamber all over surfaces and cling to ceilings (the reason why this is important is that it would affect the way the hands are shaped at the very least).

I've kind of gone with a more human shape at the moment just because I've found that things can be a little more creepy when they almost look like something recognisable. This might change soon since I feel like I sort of hit a dead end with it. There's probably going to be a couple more pages like this and at least one colour sketch before I get to the 3d in any event.

wow, awesome idea and concept art. I like where your heading with the concept too, looks awesome in the last page. And I agree with Malus that the middle right head concept was the coolest, mainly cos' of it's unhuman-ness compared to the face your going with and if the body is going more human, could be cool contrast maybe.

I'm definatly liking the way your mind thinks man.

Really nice art. I really like the second body that is on all fours and has really long hands/forearms. Although it would be as practical as the more human designs, it just has a really freakish appearance to it >:D

Okay, not as big an update as I'd hope to make but I got distracted by an advance screening of Dodgeball: A true Underdog Story, which I recommend (stay through the credits).

Anyway, I gave some more thought to what this creature would do in the game environment. I've found that figuring out how a creature does what it does can sometimes be a really good way to get yourself out of a rut. Basically I decided that this guy would be a bounder and by that I mean something that would get around by leaping from place to place. It would climb all over surfaces as well, making it something like a freakish ape. This means that it would need big thighs for leaping and big calves and forearms for gripping power.

Then I had a thought about how it would attack. The mouth is an obvious guess but in terms of gameplay it would be pretty boring if this thing kept running at you face first just to use the tentacles that its got there. Then I got the idea for an ambush predator. Bascially the creature would hide itself above it's prey then hoist the victim up towards it's mouth where the whole head could be inserted (this is why I made the neck have a long gash running down it, it basically increases the size of the mouth).

I took the hooked claws from birds like eagles and hawks which snatch their prey from the ground or underwater. Originally I was going to go with one big claw but the idea of lots of little claws hooking themselves under your ribs before you're hoisted up into the ceiling just creeped me out more.

Enough of that, here's my updates:

Malus: Cool, good to know I'm heading in the right direction. I have a love/hate relationship with horror games (they're my favourite but I find it really hard to play them since I seem to get really sucked into them). This is basically the first time I've posted my stuff on a bored so its nice to get a good response straight up.

Tojo: Maybe Malus is trying to hint that its your turn to buy dinner. I get what you mean about the Tarzan stuff, I have a habit of doing really kinetic stretched out human figures when I get bored. This is just kind of tapping into that.

Animal: Originally I was going to go with the more human head. My friends that I originally showed it to seemed to go more for it and I thought it suited a more human body better. Now I'm slowly adapting the body to suit the wierder head which is why there's a seam running down the chest now. Its a small thing but I think it makes a good bit of difference.

Aven: Yeah, I've got a soft spot for that body as well but I ruled it out because I thought it would be hard to cram that shape into the spaces I want this creature to go. The only way to do it would have been to shrink it physically but I want this thing to be fairly sizable.

Me109: Here's hoping I can live up to it in polys. I'm pretty out of practice in 3d since I decided to switch back to traditional stuff after I finished my course.

MoonUnit: Actually I only started doing life drawing recently (tutored lessons at ACSA) and to date I've only had three lessons.

Hopefully more updates tomorrow where I should go into the colour scheme and some more reasons behind design choices.

you have a great eye for anatomy especially the hand sketches are pretty damn awesome. The concept is kick arse as well. My favourite so far in the comp.

I salute U :).

Sorry about the lack of an update yesterday, I got stuck for two hours trying to get files of a Mac onto a PC (no luck in the end either). Hopefully I'll be able to put something up tonight.

HazarD: I don't mind confetti just no rice, that kills birds...or something.

Delmo: I actually like the exposed guts one as well but I've ruled it one since it would require a lot of detail to model (or at least it would require me to make comprises I don't want to). I'll probably be going with the spec map option in this which would most likely leave me with a kind of lumpy surface with an internal organ texture on it. Now if I could use normal maps...

Conner O Kane: Thanks!

danger dave: The hands probably look a little more refined since I knew what I was trying to do with them and felt comfortable spending extra time on them. With the body I kept thinking about something else while I was drawing them so kept rushing to try out the new idea.

Its really twisted, physically and mentally. Cant wait to see more

Submitted by Azazel on Tue, 31/08/04 - 10:07 AM Permalink

Okay, so this will probably be the last of the drawn stuff that I'l be sticking up. I'm going to try and see if I can't colour the full body shot while I'm at work but that's about it. I haven't gone too overboard with detail (relatively) because I want to try and stay under the tri limit. I'm used to working high poly so this will be something of a challenge for me so I'm trying to work around my habits for now. If I have enough room left at the end I'll use that to start adding extra little things.

The first page is all about torsos. I'm hoping that by adding a seam down the chest I'll give the impression that there is one creature wearing another creature's skin so I was trying to avoid going with something predictable for the waist. Right now its actually based off a skinned throat which should hopefully give it some otherworldyness which I think the design may be missing now. The back I always wanted to have some sort of bony spine thing going so that didn't need to be designed too much.

The second page is more or less the finished design, I may alter the proportions a bit during modelling, shrink the chest, lengthen the arms, that head looks to big, but this is pretty much it. I know that it looks pretty dull right now but this creature wasn't really meant to be seen in such a bog standard pose. It looks much better when its contorted into wierd shapes and hunched over like it would be in game (at least that's how it looks in my head). The main body is going to be a very pale, dry skin colour whereas the torso and inside of the mouth should be a very lurid and slick red. This should give some nice contrast to the design and should really help for the impact when the mouth opens up. I'm also trying to go for the danger colour idea that you see on some wild animals, particuarly frogs and the like.

Oh yeah, for those wondering what that thing on the right of the second page is, it was meant to be a shot of the mouth wide open from front on.

Now onto the modelling.

To be honest I'm not entirely sure what the inside of the tentacles are going to look like, all I know is that they need to be red and slick like the inside of the mouth and the waist. That wierd random muscley look just seemed to be a decent way to stick some detail in there for the time being.

makes sense, so you basicly want them to be an extension of the jaw/mouth rather then tentacles coming from the cheeks?

Submitted by Delmo on Wed, 01/09/04 - 6:14 AM Permalink

That character looks like it would be fun to anmiate. I can imagine him looking around and his cheeks swing with the motion of his head. Are you planning to animate your character after your finish? Keep up the good work!

Submitted by Azazel on Wed, 01/09/04 - 9:18 AM Permalink

Moonunit: Exactly. I'm hoping that because the look of the inside of the mouth continues out to the tip of the tentacles it should make the mouth look about three times larger than it actually is when its open all the way. Should also make the throat look deeper.

Delmo: I'm hoping to at least rig the creature for the contest so I can pose it but any animation will most likely have to wait until after the contest is over. I would like to do an animation of the mouth opening at least.

I really admire your drawing ability! Please tell me you were professionally trained and its not just raw tallent. Where can I go to learn to draw like that???
I have one small crit on your creature. His upper body seems a little too small to support his bulky head. Even if you are going for the withered look, I think that the rib cage should be a little larger. The head is in good proportions to it's legs, and the legs look like they should be supporting a larger frame. But hey, that's just my thoughts.[:p]

Submitted by Azazel on Sat, 11/09/04 - 5:56 AM Permalink

Don't worry guys, I'm not dead, I've just been finding 3d modelling a lot harder than I remember it being since I let myself fall out of practise while I worked on my traditional skills (which is my real passion I guess). Basically I'm so underwhelmed with my results so far that I really don't want to post my progress. Hopfully after the weekend when I've had an opportunity to work at it for an extended period, instead of waiting until after work, I'll have something to show.

Sinister: sorry buddy, no real training to speak of. I did Graphic Illustration at Uni SA for a year but left after I got really frustrated with the fact they were teaching more graphic design instead of illustration (six months of typography, no thanks). I just did a five week, three hour session life drawing thing but that's about the extent of my formal education when it comes to traditional stuff (I have a diploma in multimedia but that's a different skill set which I've sadly let languish). If I have any skill it mainly comes from paying close attention to my influences and getting a lot of info from the web.

Sumea Challenge #6 - Bubsy - Challenger #7

I saw your comp. so I though I'd give it a shot. I have decided to concept a con-joined twin Zombie. He is also made out of scrap body parts. The little head on his shoulder, I?ve called him Frankie, an I?m going to paint him as a Scary Clown. I've built chambers on his back, which surply his brain in all his function. Frankie is the brains behind to body and can be quiet sadistic. I'll model a bloody axe for 'them' at a later stage.

I've got part of a "story behind the concept" still in my head an I 'll post that later. I'm in the middle of texturing at the moment. I hoped to have it finished in about two weeks.

Sumea Challange #6 - 3D - Zombear

I'm not much for concept art, but here is the story: Panda Bear has foolishly stumbled into a U.S millitary warhead testing Zone, and as a result of such action, he subjected himself to deformities and chemical diseases. Thus making the Chinese loveable animal into a furious killing machine.

This is the updated bear. Doesn't too horror like at the moment, now that I look at it, the fingers have to be improved, but I'd appreciate any crits.

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- MutaNt ForK

Here's the concept. I was going to keep it simple - victim grows another arm which exits the body via the head, ripping it off. The arm then comes through the back into the stomach where it acts as the main attacking limb.

I have had a couple or thoughts about modifying this since:

 • eye ball in the palm of hand
 • more arms growing out of other parts of the body and of various sizes
 • add some teeth somewhere(?)

[img]http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/attached/freshONE/200481122529_PainKiller…]

Ok, heres a bit of a description, sorry been real busy at school...

The mutilated patchwork torso hangs painfully by a meat hook through his right arm just above the shoulder, into which the intrevenious drips feed him with the necessary drugs to survive and continue his bloodlust, (think of the movie SEVEN - the Sloth sin is it? He was alive, but not like we know it!) The medical drip stand he is suspended from not only gives him immediate overdoses of adrenilin like drugs at the touch of a button but also acts as a walking frame in conjuction with the single crutch he possesses. This allows him to akwardly yet eratically hobble towards an opponent. His unholy makers have been known to rig the PainKillers' crutches with a varity of nasty items, either infected razor blades and medical scalpels or second hand needles and drill points, this makes for a potentially deadly close range attack! As you can see, the filthy mutant flys gather round like bee's to a nest, feeding apon the painkillers open wounds and getting high off the drugs in his blood stream. These loyal disease ridden followers can swarm and attack apon command allowing accurate ranged assaults apon multiple enemys. The pain killer also has a menacing SPECIAL ATTACK (OOOOOOoo...), if you are unfortunate enough to witness such an attack you will likely pass out before it has truely done any damage... Under extreme threat he can scream a chilling and haunting howl at over 160 decibels, rendering anyone in the vincinity def, stunned and senseless momentarily while the Painkiller prepares, for the lack of a better description - the "drop gut" manouver!!! The creature contracts and tenses the muscles in the abdomin area to forcefully excrete a vile blend of diseased blood and rotten pus from his mucky torso stump, he can only do this once or twice as it is taxing to his drip supply - which does regenerate might I add. This disgusting mess spills forth onto the floor spreading out like a tidal wave of sickness and infection, instantly killing all who happen to be in its way... WHOA HAHAHAHA!!!!! Did I mention he has bad breath??? lol

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- DanMill - Challenger #4

Hi guys. I've never entered a comp before but I hope to have a stab at this one.

My guy here I call the vollenteer. Can I get some feed back on if you think he fits the "survival/Horror" genre. Basically he is a zombie type guy with mutations and a few metal bits here and there. My other idea is to have parts of him look fit strong and healthy in contrast to the rest of him. [xx(]

Nice hairy legs and the worst case of tennis-sholder I've ever seen. I think he fits the theme with the surgical enhancements and being an altered human. I'd forget those John Lennon glasses though.

Thats creepy danno. Creepy in a good way though, not a michael jackson way (despite the botox)

would it be possible to beef those legs up some? They look a little atrophied when compared with the rest of his body.

good job!

pretty neat, though personally id bring that left shoulder mouth closer to the chest.

Submitted by animal on Thu, 19/08/04 - 3:14 AM Permalink

wow, you've really made a great realisation of that concept so far, that chomping shoulder's awesome, and the face with being yanked back into a massive smile looks great. Only thing that bothers me is the top half of the legs, the muscle structure just doesn't look right (unless you made if different from human on purpose)it looks like you have the right mucsles going but that one extuded out up the middle of the leg is really what caught my eye, i just don't think it looks right with muscles going straight my the leg like that. I liked he nails in the arm in the concept too if you planning to still do them.

Submitted by Danmill on Thu, 19/08/04 - 7:09 PM Permalink

Cheers animal. Thanks I will look at the leg again. Yes I plan to add the nails. But it does depend on poly counts. Thanks for the comments!

Submitted by Wizenedoldman on Thu, 02/09/04 - 1:42 AM Permalink

Heh, looks to me like he'd just fling that smaller arm around like he has a dead arm. What's the poly count, doesn't look particularly high. I suppose there's quite a few in that gut area of his.

No pelvis whatsoever! what the heck happened on his last date [:O]

Can the mouth/arm ... close its mouth and withdraw the arm like a tongue ? otherwise he would probably accidentally chew his own limb off when excited.

Rargh, hes a executioner, and he likes chopping things.
Hardly an inspired and original character, but I think a fairly straight forward idea will work fairly well.

Kinda got the idea after seeing Prisoner of Azkaban, Macnair looked like a mean bastard, and I thought that it could be a cool idea, I've unfortunately not been able to find any pictures of him though.

I won't blather on anymore, gotta head into work now.. Damnit. Updates to come.

Figured I better upload something a little more substantial while I've had time to do it.
Two shots, fairly self explanatory each one.. Still working on fixing some of the facial problems.
You could argue that all that alot of the detail will get obscured by the mask, but crap, I think with the polycount, I may as well attempt to do the job right, rather than rely on the hood to hide things.

Blah blah, as usual I love the sound of my own typing. Comments, Crits. Throw 'em at me.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Tue, 17/08/04 - 4:57 AM Permalink

Looks cool, my only crit is (and i dont know if it matters but) with the mask off he looks less like the old crazy man type character, you said you wanted to do the face right but its up to you if it really matters. I think it lies in the eye holes on the mask giving him the needed low brow/droopy under eye ring effect (if that makes sense).

Submitted by Sorceror Bob on Tue, 17/08/04 - 7:26 AM Permalink

Sounds good to me Moony, thats part of the intention actually, the mask turning him into, well something different.

I'll see if I can fix the face so it's creepier, without relying on the hood too much, Thanks!

*update above*
Gave him some hillbilly teeth, these will be randomised once i have finished the model, so it's not going to be symmetrical

Submitted by Danmill on Wed, 18/08/04 - 3:08 AM Permalink

Cool one saucey Bob. I have some thoughts on the concept (if you'll indulge me). Now don't you need to get some undead mutant action into your concept? I've been reading the threads on "Survival/Horror" and I think that sort of thing is required. Now I know you executioner is a axe weilding maniac but for the comp he may need to be dead. Or a least not very well. Head model looks good dude. Just offering my 2 cents worth. Cheers!

Submitted by Sorceror Bob on Wed, 18/08/04 - 3:20 AM Permalink

I'll see how I go about poxing him up some, I think that you have a good point there. I'm trying to avoid the 'undead' cliche however - let's see if I can fill the genre without making him a zombie.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Submitted by J I Styles on Wed, 18/08/04 - 8:15 AM Permalink

give him a necklace with the big toes of all his victims, or his head garb is made out of their eyelids, or he has a "chalk marks" tattooed into his chest of how many he's killed (which glow with the heat of the innocents souls)... go to town! horror shouldn't equal shambling undead, else it gets old too quick in my opinion.

As is, He kinda reminds me of the bumbling torture guy in Shrek at the moment... keep on thinking he'd have a warcraft peasant voice and say "ahyuck!" a lot [;)]

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- Mothdust

Hi guys. First time posting on this site. Noobalicious... I'll be entering the comp too :). Here goes...

Haven't made a name for him yet so his 'default' name will be 'Undead Mafia Boss'. His story was he was once a powerful and infamous mafia boss. During the end of his somewhat normal living state he par took in some activities that were more frowned upon by his own henchmen then they did any good for anyone. So his disgruntled hench men decided to take him out. They went to his families house. He wasn't there at the time so they killed his whole family. Wife, children, butlers, etc. Upon return his henchmen had left and his family were all dead. They all died a violent death. Their souls angry, blamed their deaths on their beloved husband/father and decided to all enter his body to haunt him instead of the house. He never really died, more like possessed by his family. He wished he could die so he can escape their tormenting souls. The family, now in control of his body rampaged through the city killing firstly his henchmen that killed the family. Then every other person that had links to his mafia and worked down the chain into other mafias and crime groups wiping out all that had made them suffer so that no one else would suffer what they did.

No one could stop him. No one knows how. All the spirits in his body keep it together through shear hatred and determination to revenge there deaths. Bullet holes riddle his body. His tommy gun empties out the blood of his victims instead of the bullet shells as he fires. It is coated in old crusty blooded. Half rusted but 100% efficient. Sometimes the souls of his family leave his body to possess the body's of their victims, keeping them alive long enough to bid them their evil doing to someone else. Some people think that is when he is most vulnerable, when some of the power leaves his body when
they leave him to kill others. His eyes glow bright red. Maybe changing every so often, depending on which soul desires to control his body at the time. A dark murky cloud of mist covers most of
his face. Aerie shouts of anguish echo from his body terrifying his victims before their ultimate doom!

etc... I could ramble on more now but I won't bore you. I'll edit his story as I develop his character more. So far this is the rough concept that I have done. I'll research more about the clothes
and the time period of the story when I have the time. I was thinking of having him more mangled up from gunfire and bits of guts sticking outside his torn clothes.
[img]http://www.sumea.com.au/forum/attached/mothdust/2004862353_UnDeadMafiaB…]

I'm very open to any tips or suggestions. I just got my wacom tablet the other day so I'll have plenty of time to practice drawing more and making more 'better' concept drawings for ye all (and me).

Cheers,
Mothdust.

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- DangerDave - Challenger#27

Hi all,

I've been lurking around sumea for quite sometime and seen many great artwork. So i might give it a shot at this one.I will be doing a doom3 type of monster (basically specific for doom 3 genre) Hes a mutated monster that lurks around the shadows.

I will post the concept for the body sometime next week. I may do normal mapping just depends on how much time i got (using Zbrush and 3dsmax). I will also post screenshots of modelling soon.

Submitted by Malus on Thu, 05/08/04 - 11:07 PM Permalink

Silent hill, resident evil = survival/horror genre.
Doom 3 = first person shooter genre.

I know Doom 3 could be classed as horror in its "atmosphere etc" but its not billed as a survival horror "genre", people seem to be forgeting the word "genre".

We need to keep some boundries for this comp or people will be making anything and claiming it can be survival/horror and as such Doom 3 is stretching it too far. [:)]

Put it this way, if the brief said make a platform "genre" character everyone would hopefully do a Jax, Ty, Mario, Sonic style thing.

But it could be argued that in Halflife you had to jump on some crates to cross a pit therefore it had platformer gameplay and therefore you should be able to model Gorgon freeman. [:P]

See my point, boundries, needed for judging etc.

That guy would work in a silent hill, res evil or similar games though, looks good.

Submitted by Sinister on Thu, 05/08/04 - 11:26 PM Permalink

After playing Doom3 for half the day yesterday, I would have to say that the first half of the game comes very close to the survival horror theme (apart from the setting being in a martian base). The zombies and creatures certainly do (apart from "Pinky" with the mechanical back half).

Anyway, I love your concept and it suits the theme fine. Your digital painting skills are great. The muscle fibre look cool. I'd love to be able to paint like that! I too would love to see a concept for the body. Although normal mapping is out, bump certainly is in so I'd love to see some of that in your final model [:D]

clearly this character fits a horror design.. so clearly it would be right at home in a survival/horror game.

..so obviously you are upset by the word "DOOM" an not by the design. Don't you think your being a little ...anal... and arguing semantics here?.. after all if DD had said the word "RESIDENT EVIL" you would have had no problem with this model.

it's a fantastic design that clearly fits the horror genre!

Just another point Malus (sorry to highjack your thread Dave :) ), Dino Crisis is also considered Survival Horror. Dinosaurs on a Space Station? Not what has been seen as 'Survival Horror' so far in this comp :)

Submitted by Malus on Fri, 06/08/04 - 2:03 AM Permalink

Kit: I understand the concept would work in this comp, I said that it would, read my post and you'll see I never said he couldn't use it.
Just thought I'd put the whole doom 3 thing out before he modelled a mini gun on it.
So yeah I'm anal but only because I want everyone to have a decent chance at the prize. [:P]

Aven: I've never once mentioned Dino Crisis have I?

The reason for making a distinct boundary is because I've been indundated with personal emails asking what characters people can make, these ranged from cyber monkey demons to cute mario styled zombies, we needed a boundry for judging.

I could honestly care less if people want to do them, I just wanted to help people get the most chance of winning, next time I'll just let it be I guess.

DangerDave: Sorry for the highjack.
Btw: I was for normal mapping, most people said too hard. [:(]

gameplay waise doom 3 is first person shooter, but the enemies jumping out of shaddows, or lurcking slowly out of shaddows in kinda survival horrorish. i think doom3 comes pretty close visually, with perhaps the only real thing going against it in terms of this comp is that it's heavily sci-fi.

Submitted by tojo on Fri, 06/08/04 - 8:35 PM Permalink

actually i agree with you LW ... Doom as an enviroment is heavily sci-fi/survivalist (traditionally speaking) and although it can often embody obvious horror elements such as characters like this (that if met in real life would scare the absolute crap out of you).... it is not entirely as rooted with inner-fear or psychological fear/... as say the exorcist/blair-witch project/the ring/or the shining ....

( i read a couple of relatively 'subjective' journals on what horror is, and why it evolves over time..... interestingly enough... apperently trends in successful horror quite often follow media fears and 'presented' social phobias )

baring this in mind... i think that this concept (even though it is just a head at this stage) definately sits on the fence between two genres ( which could work against you as a negative?????) and if i were on the judging panel ..... i would be looking to see how it could be 'presented' in a fasion that would lend it more to traditional horror/survival motifs... or more to the point .... what could shape the idea a little further away from the sci-fi realms?

perhaps when you build on the story or concept?? it is definately painted well... and if this is your 'concept' then i cant wait to see the detail you put into the texture!.. [;)]

better off thinking about why 9 out of 15 responses in your post are arguing for and against the ligitimacy of your concept within the survival/horror genre rather than giving art/tech-advice and feedback on creativity........ now ...... rather than later... [^]

keep up the awsome work whichever way you go!!!!! [8]

Submitted by RLyons on Fri, 06/08/04 - 9:30 PM Permalink

Great image, the thing looks scary enough to me. I wouldn't worry about the rest of these bitchy posts.
Survival horror just means scary stuff, I mean Christ I loved resident evil but remember when the giant spiders came out.... they looked cool sure but how did we go from zombies to giant spiders. If the contents of this comp just mirrors what we have already seen in third person games it going to be pretty ordinary.
And Malus, I'd chill out, your going to have a break down if you start critiquing every post that goes up, let alone Dave's first draft concept.... we haven?t even seen what the rest of the thing looks like. And who cares where people get there influence as long as it?s scary.

Submitted by souri on Sat, 07/08/04 - 1:50 AM Permalink

There's nothing wrong with critique as long as it's constructive..

However, Doom3 isn't survival horror. It's a FPS with a horror setting. Survival horror isn't fast paced, twitch shooting, jump/run/shoot action, with little or no puzzle elements.. However, like Livewire said, the graphic style is close, BUT as soon as you start adding robotic appendages/sci fi elements into it, then I think you're heading towards the wrong track.. Malus was trying to steer you onto the right track, since you did mention Doom..

Heck, I heard alarm bells when you wrote Doom as well. The concept is great, and all Malus said was, if you're putting a chaingun on it or plan to have it with robot/metal appendages ala Doom, then we're getting to a style that's not really survival horror. That's all that was, and I'm not quite sure why people are getting defensive here.

Submitted by dangerdave on Sat, 07/08/04 - 2:39 AM Permalink

i never intended the thread to be like this...

just like makk said i shouldnt have mentioned doom 3 genre at all, or anything that had to do with doom 3.

I know my concept doesnt mean anything for now it is just a head concept so please give me time to correct it and i can guarantee that it wont have any metallic robot gadgets etc attached to it.

Tojo: thank you. It did take me a while. it is very hard to paint and im still tinkering around painting flesh etc.

Submitted by Kalescent on Sat, 07/08/04 - 4:03 AM Permalink

Great concept dangerdave - i would like to see that guy be some huge massive boss creature - just a pure abomination of flesh / limbs and all things tendonlike. That flails its wet meaty limbs / tentacles.

I say make him non bipedal - just a massive Caterpillar type thing or maybe even 4 legged spider beast. That concept tells a story to me - and I cant wait to see the whole body. Well done [:D]

What do mean no robotic appendages??? Do robotic appendages mean fast paced, twitch shooting, jump/run/shoot action? What about the final boss in Resident evil, he comes out of a test tube in what appears to be a sci fi setting. There were even sharks in resident evil!!!
And does Dave?s creature even have robotic appendages? I think he even said he wasn?t adding metallic parts after being hijacked by these posts. I wish we had seen what Dave?s original idea had been before the poor guy started reading these posts.
This comp seems to be pushing very narrow field of creativity based on games that through everything and the kitchen sink at you. All Dave mention was that he was taking inspiration from Doom 3, sweet, who cares were people get their influence from?!?
And I don?t think Malus should be coming down on concepts so hard, his comments don?t seem to be inciting new characters just pushing people towards the same old jazz?.. Or is that what we want to see?

it would almost work even without the head! especially that big eye under the topmost spike/scale

the feathered tail gives it a final fantasy monster style feel...

If you can model as well as you can paint, then this will be a massive forerunner :D

Submitted by dangerdave on Thu, 12/08/04 - 7:23 PM Permalink

WoW thank you for comments guys :)...... i really apreciate it... Yes they are all eyes but shaded shit.... just did not have time :(....

I might loose the hair on the tail or maybe have some fleshy bits hanging......LOL just looking at it.... it does look quite crap.... :) thanks malus and aven.... i think there will be massive changes and looks to model by looking at it.. i hope i dont stray away too much..

Aven: i like modelling better than painting :) at least i get proportions right when modelling.....

Submitted by MoonUnit on Fri, 13/08/04 - 2:22 AM Permalink

dude thats freaking awesome, your one hell of a painter
crits, id loose the fur aswell, also i might tone down the muscle volume in the uppertorso/arms. Not saying make it all small and normal looking, just a little bit down.

Submitted by Kalescent on Fri, 13/08/04 - 6:05 AM Permalink

Love it! I was hoping it would be some kind of massive tyrant / beast. Id go with some kind of club on his tail or more like spikes aka dinosaur'ish.

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- majorpain

Hey all

This is a concept for a screaming banshee, model will follow hopefully.

Got some decent edge loops around the mouth area but around the nose and eye area it's a bit of a mess. The model looks like it would be a pain to work on at the moment. Keep at it.

Submitted by conundrum on Thu, 05/08/04 - 6:27 AM Permalink

looking nice at the moment, not the biggest expert on edge-loops what have you so i cant give you too much advice on that. the shape of the head is superb, although i think the eyes don't quite have the right expression, i was thinking of giving it a bit more of a frown around the brow. other than that, no crits

Submitted by MajorPain on Thu, 05/08/04 - 8:40 PM Permalink

Some more work done on the head, low and highpoly images.

I had to add some teeth to see how the mouth would look, I have designed the jaw/teeth/lips to close completely too.

I think that at the moment his eyes sit abit too high up, lower them a little.
Other then that I think its coming along well :)

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- Pauli G - Challenger #23

G'day everyone, It's my first time posting here. I saw this competition and I had to enter. So I am just holding my place for the comp. I have already started to model my character and concepted enough to get the overall result... and will post it soon.

Basically my entry will be a priest that was involved in a car accident after picking up a zombie prostitute. She bit him and he ended up mangled in a car wreck. He's a zombie priest.... with his legs missing... and his intestines hanging out.

Thanks all, looking forward to seeing everone's final entries and good luck to all.

Paul

Submitted by tojo on Tue, 03/08/04 - 1:35 AM Permalink

....... sounds pretty cool.....
cant wait to see some concept drawings.......

he could bve carrying his intestines around with him in a bucket.... [:D]

Submitted by essence on Tue, 03/08/04 - 5:00 AM Permalink

and where did the prostitute bite? on second thoughts, dont answer that

Submitted by Pauli G on Tue, 03/08/04 - 11:54 PM Permalink

LOL Any bite from a zombie has got to be severe but I'll leave it to your imagination I guess [:D]

He's going to drag himself around but the bucket idea sounds pretty freaky. Here's the concept. Small and lacking in detail but it's all I needed. Sorry it doesn't show much.

I started a few days ago and took screenshots as I go along so here they are:

Polycount is about 2100 so far but it's not finished yet.
I have also setup a bone rig but it needs to be tweaked. Thx

Submitted by tojo on Wed, 04/08/04 - 1:24 AM Permalink

really cool man!...[}:)]

kinda got a stylized look about it....... i love the hair.. good to see a few 'classic' horror concepts rolled into one ...
priests are a quintessential cliche in the horror genre! especially zombie ones!..... and of course...which makes it even more true to the horror genre.... is the fact he was ( i imagine )fornicating just prior to his... turn for the worst..

cant wait to see the texture and finished model.. nice hands as well.... they have life allready! [}:)]

Submitted by Aven on Wed, 04/08/04 - 1:50 AM Permalink

Cool idea. Good to see you didn't go for the quite so cliched little boy...

He should look really nice once all the polys are used. Seeing as there is only half of him :)

Submitted by Kalescent on Wed, 04/08/04 - 1:52 AM Permalink

Love the Priest idea as tojo mentioned [:D] look forward to seeing this one done!

Submitted by Makk on Wed, 04/08/04 - 7:14 AM Permalink

Cool idea and good execution so far :)

Submitted by Pauli G on Thu, 05/08/04 - 2:40 AM Permalink

Thanks for all of the comments.

Here's an update:

I think it's done. His Polycount without the cross is about 2700ish. Most things I added to the priest just looked too over-the-top and I guess I could put more detail in the face. But I figured if this was a character in a game with other full bodied creatures, he would look out of place. That's my excuse....... it's not due to half-assedness........ honest!. [}:)]

On to texturing now. Unless someone thinks I should change something about him that I've overlooked?.

I have other ideas in mind for the comp so I wanna get this one done.

Any crits are more than welcome.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Thu, 05/08/04 - 3:12 AM Permalink

something you have overlooked is that this competition has a minimum limit :P im not sure if entrants are applicable for the winning prize or whatnot if they dont meet that criteria but i imagine so (its 8 thou minimum btw)

Submitted by Pauli G on Thu, 05/08/04 - 9:10 PM Permalink

really?... I just assumed it was 8000-8500 for the maximum limit.

Submitted by Makk on Thu, 05/08/04 - 10:49 PM Permalink

Round out the limbs. You have loads of polies left to spend so I dont want to see any hard "boxy" edges. If you still have some left model in some folds. Also, put some more into the elbow joints so they will deform better.
Looks good how it is but yeah, spend some polies to polish it off :)

Submitted by shath on Sat, 07/08/04 - 7:58 AM Permalink

why not just go all out with the polys you hav a bit more to use
looks good i like the concept

Submitted by Kalescent on Sat, 07/08/04 - 11:05 AM Permalink

Can I add - If some boss type person were giving me 8000 Tri's to build a model and 2 512x512's to texture it with, i would first contain my glee and squeels of excitement, closely followed by proceeding to use every last Triangle defining whatever the concept may be in the best way i knew how. No more no less.

Well maybe give or take a handful of Tri's [:p]

Apologies for the lack of updates, but school and work take up most of my time at the moment. I understand what you guys are saying, normally I would take full advantage of the high poly limit (and probably go over) but with this model it's different. Everytime I add more detail to it, the less appealing it looks to me.
Here's the latest update:

Got it up to 4000 polys. Some people have told me that I should model his lower body as well and have it next to him or attached by a thread of skin. So I will probably do that, but I want to get the main part textured and rigged. Any c&cs are more than welcome.

Submitted by Aven on Fri, 13/08/04 - 12:55 AM Permalink

It is a shame that you aren't just adding more detail to what you already have. He would look very cool with some nice wrinkles on his shirt and so on.

Sorry for not updating. My fiance gave birth to our baby girl on the 21st. So I haven't even touched my computer since then. So here's the latest update just before my fiance went into labour.

I don't know what line you have to cross to call something photosourced. I did use textures and manipulated them. His jumper texture and the skin discolouration was found on my computer but the rest is all me. Thx all

Thanx all.

I hope I don't get marked down because of the poly count, but he is half a character soooo technically he is right. [:D]

Sumea Challenge #6 -3D- TheBoyMadeOfSnot

I'm staking out my claim on this challenge a bit late but oh well..
Infected para-military zombie doorman:

haven't decided on what sort of legs yet so they've been left out of the initial concept.
