Continuing Qantm's winning streak in the “Best Unsigned Game” category of the GAmes Industries annual awards, Qantm student’s game “Mawashi Madness” has taken out the first prize, beating out a professional studio and several other colleges.

The award was determined by popular vote by GCAP delegates at Melbourne Exhibition Centre on 16-17 November 2007. Delegates had the opportunity to test the games during the exhibition before casting their vote. The shortlisted titles were:

Qantm College, Team Sumo "Mawashi Madness"
Southbank Institute of Technology "Island Hoppers"
AIE, Team Q "Sajiki"
Moxy Studios "Kami"
AIE, Catching Jack Team "Catching Jack"

Mawashi Madness is a fun fast paced Battle Royal style game with nine playable characters in ten vastly different arenas. Up to four people can battle each other with the aim of the game being to knock your opponents off the arena using a variety of moves including, grappling, pushing and changing into a ball to roll into your opponents.

“Team Sumo” - the group of students that created the game, consist of:

Tim Pettigrew - Project Manager
Lead Programmer - Sean Tasker
Lead Artist - Matthew Knights

Artists

Hugh Walters
Rohan Kindris
Woodley Nye

Coders

Albino Rodriguez
Matt Fletcher
Tyler Brooks

The team of nine students have worked for 20 weeks to design and create the game.

“Team Sumo” will be just one of the exhibits at the upcoming student Exhibition “Digitopia” happening at Qantm College in December. Friday 7th December will be an exclusive industry event, and on Saturday 8th December the college will open its doors to the general public.

Congrats to Team Sumo and the rest of the teams.
Just getting a game to a playable state is a huge achievement!

Souri, any chance of doing a profile on each team and their game with some screenshots?

Congrats to all who were shortlisted - John is right that getting something to a playable game level is a big achievement - especially when it is done as part of a course with the demands of internships and other assessment tasks getting in the way so hats off to the Qantm, AIE & Southbank entrants for the work they have done.

I am sure the Qantm guys would love to get a chance to talk about how they approached the development and provide some screen caps etc. might even provide a link for a download? Contact me Souri.

Qantm will be releasing a disk next year with a number of playable demos produced by student over the past few years - it will include the other GDAA/GCAP 'Indie' winners Scooterama and Final Justice - I will let people know when this happens.

    Congratulations guys!

Some of the Team Sumo guys have been interning with us here through QANTM, and their skills are easily of an industry standard.

    Respect!

    Scott.

Congrats to Team Sumo as well. That game was a stand out effort, and from those that I talked to about it, it really was the favourite to win. Yug and I had a chat to one of the team members at the GCAP awards night, and the guys seem pretty chuffed with winning the title. It was Well deserved!

    Congrats guys!!

As all entrants over the years will agree It takes alot of hard work, talent and determination ( also a crap load of tears, beer and bitching ) to get a polished game demo up and running to showcase and you all deserve the rewards you will now get.... nameley that all important foot in the door and the industry exposure to aid you in landing your first job!

I'm absolutely stoked that my old uni took out the cup once again but I'm even more pleased that the sheer level of quality of these game demos is increasing dramatically from all uni's! That's just a plus for our industry that struggles to find the talent in amongst the masses.

Hey just wanted to add that the Southbank guys had a much smaller team, about 10 -12 weeks dev time and their diploma is only a 2 semester course with no prior study in games development… So well done guys for even being in the running!

Congrats to the Qantm guys their game was fun and looked nice. Although we did manage to break it ;)

Congratulations to Team Sumo, its always fun to check out the games demoed at GCAP, and see the blood sweat and tears that goes in to getting them up and running on time. I'm sure the win is well deserved, and I'll be sure to check the game out at your upcoming expo.
