PS3 outselling Wii and 360 in Australia

It was just last week that Nintendo Australia was boasting the 100,000 sales numbers of the Nintendo Wii, but Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) are determined to spoil their party. You see, they too have some numbers to show.

From a Gamespot AU article, managing director at SCEA, Michael Ephraim, is quoted as saying that the Playstation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360 and Wii every week since the PS3's Australian launch, a claim which he backs up with stats released by data trackers, GfK Australia. In fact, Ephraim boasts that over 50,000 PS3's have been sold, and it's been boosted along by sales in consumer electronic stores where its Blu-ray functionality has been a big part of its appeal.

Ok I see some truth in the article about Xbox 360 failures but this story is just plain marketing bs in Australia. Based on my discussions with actual retailers the PS3 is not a big seller certainly not out selling the Wii and Xbox 360 easily as is made out here. Some channel stuffing maybe - which of course MS is also accused of. I think the MS bashing is going a bit far - I don't necessarily like them any more than Sony but it's not on to exaggerate from bias just because game developers feel their niche market might be threatened by a more open platform or some competition - which it really isn't anyway.

Yeah I couldn't personally care less really, its still a pretty boring ass console if you ask me, and if was given a grand to spend on a game system I'd get a 360 and a Wii, and frankly the PS3 can kiss it...

I think maybe there'd be one or two PS3 exclusive games that I'd be interested in and that's basically it. Pretty much all of my want list are on 360 and PC.

PS3 is off to a slow start software-wise, I own one and currently there's not much to play on it at all. But thats ok cause i expected that when i bought it, the good games are coming later this year, along with a few massive ones late 07 early 08. People seem to forget just how many exclusive games are being made for Sony at the moment, most of them AAA quality too. And this time of the year there's a drought anyway, i haven't played my 360 in ages also, actually the only console that gets any play at the moment is the good old PS2

"In an interview with GameSpot AU, Ephraim quoted figures from data trackers GfK Australia, which show that the PS3 has sold more than 50,000 units since it was launched on March 23, 2007. In comparison, the Wii has sold 100,000 units since its launch on December 7, 2006. "

So the PS3 has sold more than 50,000 units and the Wii has sold 100,000 units... The source seems to suggest despite the headline that the Wii is outselling the PS3. Isn't 100,000 units greater than 50,000 units?

I find Souri's summary a great deal more confusing than the so-called misleading headline, since nowhere in the article does Michael Ephraim state that the PS3 total sales since launch outnumber the XBox 360's or Wii's, or any combination thereof.

To quote a part of the article (directly underneath No. 6's quoted text, mind you, clarifying the article's message):
"Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," Ephraim said.

This statement could not be presented anymore clearly or succinctly. The PS3's weekly sales are greater than either the XBox's or Wii's weekly sales, save for one week, ever since we've had the opportunity to buy one.

As for the 'misleading headline', No. 6, I find it hard to believe that at this early stage of the cycle, someone would misinterpret the headline as meaning the PS3 had the largest install base within the current crop of consoles. Even so, if that's your issue, take it up with GameSpot instead of quoting the article out of context for your own convenience.

I replaced the word "combined" sales in my newsitem with "every week", so it reads "the Playstation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360 and Wii every week since the PS3's Australian launch". I'm not exactly sure why I put that word in, but yeh, it was incorrect.

And I agree, the Gamespot article never implied that the total number of PS3 sales even matched the Wii or Xbox 360 sales. The heading does have a doubling meaning so you could interpret it that way, but if you read the article, you wouldn't have come to that conclusion.

I agree with Paul. It's clear they meant "rate of sale," not total number of units. Anyhow, 50,000 is half of 100,000 and I recall the Wii being out in Australia for longer -- Wii (December 7, 2006) PS3 (March 23, 2007), close to 4 months head start and already half-way to matching the Wii 3 months after the PS3 arrives in Australia ;).

You Nintendo fanboys are just pathetic... really, give it a rest, we are sick of hearing about your delusional fantasies -- there is a reason why the majority of Wii games rate far, far, lower in scores than both the X360 and PS3... put the puzzle pieces together, finally!

The Wii is a lemon that is only being bought up by Nintendo fanboys and the ignorant new to gaming... just like the GCube :).

Souri: Thanks for correcting the article. If I came off as angry or snide, I apologise, I was only pointing out the mistake for the sake of clarity, not as a personal affront. You do lovely work, providing us all with an invaluable service, and you ought to be commended more often.

    the gamecube was good.
res evil 4,pikmin,zelda and metroid were awesome games.
but i wouldn't buy a wii cause it doesn't seem to have anything that good on it.
    same reason i wouldn't bother with a ps3.

In the US the PS3 is still third, and in Japan it is a distant second (360 is even further back).

Going to be an interesting Christmas....
