Mech-Tech

Journal Category

What's all this then?

For the last few weeks I've been offline due to a house move. And in that time while I used net-cafes to communicate to my team on Tower City and keep management going, I wasn't able to work on any online related stuff.

So it occurred to me that to help support my portfolio as a game designer I should make a work sample that demonstrates a more casual game. A lot of Australian studios create these sort of games. So it would do well to create an example of what you can provide.

This is the result: Mech-Tech

A mixture of inspirations drawn from Mechwarrior, 80s sci-fi B-movies, the board game Memour 42 and Puzzlequest Galactrix. Mech-tech is a casual puzzle game that blends micro-puzzle battles with a hexagonal tactical turn-based battle map. The player controls their army to complete objectives on these battle maps. The player can also upgrade and customise the Mech for new combat commands and abilities.

Artistically I'm really happy on how these mock-ups came out. While not obviously true concept art worthy. I feel that they communicate the point across as to my ideas of how the game would look and play. Overall the main mission map mock-up took about 3 1/2 days of solid work. 1 of those days just to sketch, ink and render the character portraits.

I should also add that there's a 2 page game overview doc. It can be found here: http://www.designerwatts.com/file/detail/What+is+Mech.doc

Overall mech-tech took just under 6 days to concept and create these mock-ups and doc. I plan to use it in future job applications to show some more variety in design and to show my artistic-side as well.

Thanks for reading.

The Pudding Archives

Journal Category

Hey folks,

I'm in the middle of fancifying my folio, and thought I might share some choice cuts from the archive.

Some are a little old, but are favourites of mine. The are part of a series based on a world of high powered fantasy adventure - epic adventures, larger than life adventure, ridiculously big weapons. I'll share more of the creatures and environments in other posts.

Palace of Cetriss.

A tonne of work recently but regrettably very little that I can actually show...

Design of the Palace has been refined in the elevation sketch...

Dino Ahoy

Part of a recent dinosaur bender. Some would say I'm always on a dinosaur bender.
I'll be doing more soon.
(Looks like the size or aspect ratios a bit much for the page- if you click on it you see the whole thing.)

This is a great style, nice work.

Suggestion with the meat though, could make it a bit less black and maybe add some detail to it, like you did the lettuce.

Sequential Art Sample

Journal Category

I recently took on a sequential art project for an upcoming charity auction. The outcome is a little rougher than I'd like in spots but it was rewarding to create a finished illustrated page in a reasonably short time frame. I'm getting into this type of art a little more recently including an interest in storyboards (I might post of them down the track too). Final artwork was created in Photoshop with initial roughs sketched by hand.

Geisha Concept

Journal Category

Hey guys!

Just thought I would share some of my new concept work with you. Using a Geisha model (currently building) I was going to lip-sync it to a small sound clip from Memoirs of a Geisha and give my model a personality.

Anywho, don't forget to leave a comment.

Thanks!!!
Mel.

Awesome work.
Very good at realistic drawing...
I'm pretty much limited to anime style. I envy you.

Really good. It's only the back eye seems slanted and doesn't curve around the head enough. Generally the face appears to be slightly turned away but that eye isn't. I mean that might be just me.

But again apart from that she great.

More folio pages...

I might as well upload my folio as it stands...

I need a new Job...

Submitted by designerwatts on Tue, 17/02/09 - 7:15 PM Permalink

Looking for a new job?

Bluetongue entertainment down in Melbourne are considering hiring a few temporary concept artists. If you're fine with living in melbourne it might pay to give them a call about an interview.

I stress though. it's a temporary 3-6 month job. :)

Hope that helps!

You've registered with a pretty strange login name. Is there a story behind that or anything? O_O

Incredible work, btw :)

I'm assuming Photoshop? Using a drawing tablet you used brushes and painted over a photo? Just curious, i like the look.

VIS - My first 3D character

Journal Category

This is VIS (Vengence In Style).

It was my first character I designed and made in 3d. It was supposed to be a kind of human heavenly fighter in a suit. His sword has elemental powers and it's magic ripped of the sleeve from that arm. Coming from a slightly more futuristic world, his other arm is an arm cannon (it is under the suit). This was partly probably due to lack of imagination on how to balance the sword arm.

A few things I didn't get time to add were a better sword texture (with glowing text), better background, feather in the hat, and some others that escape me at the moment.

The Demon dude I loved in this since the texture colour was a bit of playing around with blending modes in photoshop and it works well for the character. Which confuses me if I deside to come back to these characters, if I'll make a demon vs robot game, or VIS game with demons and robots.
