Mick from Lava Injection on AustralianGamer Podcast

AustralianGamer has a special guest on their weekly Friday podcast who is none other than Mick from Lava Injection. If you're a regular visitor on Sumea, you'll know that Lava Injection took out first place in our Developer Service of the Year (Audio) 2005 award, and they're also a fine sponsor of Sumea. Mick joins Matt and Yug from Australian Gamer to chat about game music as well as other game related topics such as the recent Reservoir Dogs game ban.

The AustralianGamer podcast is without a doubt one of the best local game-related podcasts around, and they're always an entertaining listen, so check it out!

Comparisons between the Australian Gamer and Angry Gamer podcasts will undoubtly be made, seeing as they're both created in Queensland and offer commentary on current gaming issues. As to whether which is better, it's really up to personal taste, I think.

AustralianGamer is a straight up bare-bones podcast, with Matt and Yug chatting. And while this might not initially seem that exciting, the guys however are always entertaining, and the humour is genuine, upredictable, and not forced. The banter between Matt and Yug is what really makes this podcast shine.

It's obvious that Angry Gamer has a much higher production value, with more time spent on editing, coming up with sketches and skits with loads of voice effects and other whiz bang stuff, but I think the problem is that the humour misses the mark at times. With comedy routines and skits, they really can be hit or miss affairs, and it's often said that writing comedy is pretty darn hard to do, let alone get right all the time. I sure as heck couldn't do it, so kudos for the guys for attempting it, and I can appreciate the extra effort in making something more than a simple straight up podcast, but sometimes when the humour really misses it's mark, it can be a bit cringeworthy. For example, playing the echoed Oblivion sample whenever someone mentions that name, or the skits where the voice actor refers to everything as shit, it makes me wanna reach for the forward slider.

Anyway, like I said, it's really up to individual taste and while I prefer AustralianGamer's podcast, I'm sure people appreciate the fine efforts behind both podcasts. What does anyone else think?

I don't think there's really any comparison. The Angry Gamer guys seem to be well informed and professional. Note the use of the word "studio" by comparison to "bedroom". The Australian Gamer guys are clearly idiots. They are embarrassing at best. Funny, yes, but it's a laugh at not with kind of thing. Yug being drunk for the podcast recording is the height of unprofessionalism.
