Krome lead designer Cameron Davis discusses Viva Pinata: Party Animals

Company

There has been a lot of hype around Microsofts answer to Mario Party - Viva Pinata: Party Animals. In fact, Party Animals is turning out to be a lot more hyped, and even more anticipated than the original; some people are whispering that it will be more fun too.

gameplayer has landed an interview with the Party Animals lead designer Cameron Davis, who describes the game as "all about fun". Davis argues that, unlike other 360 titles such as Gears of War, Party Animals is a game the whole family can enjoy, and it's not something you have to hide when your kids are around, which is a direction in which Microsoft is really aiming at the moment.

I guess the GTA IV delay will give people more of a chance to buy my game? nah, not even I believe that. Look, Party Animals is a f***ing party game ? we?re not exactly writing Shakespeare here. We?re doing a kids? game, and we happen to do kids? games very well.

he should watch his language when he is doing interviews.. it's all fun and all but if you are representing your company I don't think it's wise to use words like f***ing. just not professional

    Especially about a Kid's game...

i agree with him, kids shouldnt play games they're to annoying
  • 4. Anonymous - Fri, 17 Aug 2007 00:04:47 EST
Yes ... you can make your point without bad language.
  • 6. Anonymous - Thu, 23 Aug 2007 14:17:50 EST
Do you think he would get fired over this? I doubt microsoft would be happy about him talking about their game in that way. If i was krome I would fire him over something like that. An apology is not enough.

Bunch of uptight people on these boards, he's a game designer not an arch-bishop. Personally I wouldn't have used that language in an interview, but that doesn't mean I think he shouldn't have the right to. If Krome were the type of company that would fire someone over foul language (not even directed at anyone/anything), I doubt they'd have been around as long as they have and be landing the kind of contracts they have.

So while I agree it was bad form, I don't think he needs to be sent to the gallows for it. The last thing this industry needs is more people worried about PR. ¤

  • 8. Anonymous - Thu, 23 Aug 2007 16:16:09 EST
Bad form or not, there's no way they could fire him for this. He'd take them for wrongful dismissal.

    ...and win!!!

    @ #8

Dunno. Depends if it damaged the image of their product (which I doubt it did, but you know).

They'd still be well ahead of any other Aussie studio in terms of published original IP titles wouldn't they? ¤

"And yet more kiddy stuff from krome yay. I wonder if they are ever going to make a new original IP again. How long has it been?"

The last TY game (Kromes own IP) was released two years ago, not long at all really.

Theres nothing even remotely professional about him so it wouldnt even enter his mind that this kind of comment or language may reflect badly on krome or have the potential to damage there relationship with a publisher, the _only_ thing he is good at is kissing ass and if this were to land him in trouble hed just lick or suck his way out of it anyhow.

hahaha, anonymity ftw. That's when we get the juicy stuff (aka truth)
  • 17. Anonymous - Mon, 27 Aug 2007 00:18:20 EST
We don't always get truth though, it seems the site cracks down on too much talk about individuals in the Australian games industry. A couple of months ago I saw a thread where a discussion about John Passfields reasons for leaving Krome started and then was quickly deleted.

Well that's the problem with anonymous forums.

Someone with a a grudge can stir some crap, that's (possibly) not true, defame someone and there's absolutely nothing that can be done about it. You never (or I haven't anyway) see any of that type of crap on a board where you've got to give correct id details, so it's a toughy. I've seen people I've worked with and have first hand knowledge of get torn to shreds on some forums, and it's complete garbage so...

Ripping on someone you know or work with without the cover of anonanimity has huge potential to lead to a hostile work environment and more. In these circumstances, I for one would tend to put more trust in an anonymous comment than I would one that wasn't, to me it seems more likely that the truth or something closer to it would tend to emerge under the cloak of anonymity than it would otherwise.
  • 20. Anonymous - Mon, 27 Aug 2007 23:41:24 EST
Isn't the whole point that you probably shouldn't be ripping into someone on a public forum? If they're an idiot, tell them to their face or have the balls to id yourself if you're going to say it publicly. If things are as bad as you're (anonymously) saying they are, then the work environment is probably terrible anyway.

If it's true, then what have you got to lose (other than perhaps your professionalism)? I can't see anonymity as being more of a reason to believe something vs someone identifying themselves and standing by their view.

    ... He says anonymously.

Guys, remember that we do have the functionality to mark down or up comments here. If there is a comment that you don't like, mark it down, and if enough people do it, it will be gone. If you think a poster has made a well thought out and rational comment, please do mark it up. If you're unhappy about the trolls, you can do something about it.

Yes .. Its true.. Cameron clearly has no idea .... And seriously, I have told him to his face many times.. Yet.. Here he is still.
I agree with all the slams he gets here and clearly have no idea how he continually gets away with it.
And its clearly obvious the people sticking up for him on this forum are his alter ego's or his entourage of similars.

That would make a great IR platform. "I don't like you because you don't do what I say, you should get fired." Get a haircut!

One time I saw Cameron kill a man in cold blood after he threatened to expose him for the fraud he is. All he does is rip off old games and take credit for other people's work. And he drinks a bottle of scotch every lunch. And Krome is about to go under any week now. And Sumea is an intelligent place to discuss the Australian games industry.

Only one of these things is true, can you guess which one?

  • 1. Anonymous - Wed, 29 Aug 2007 21:34:57 EST
Hm tough choices but after thinking about it for a while, I'll have to go with ...

'take credit for other people's work'

have I won anything for getting the right answer?

  • 2. Anonymous - Mon, 10 Sep 2007 15:41:57 EST
    Oh, I know...

Krome about to go under, right?!

That one is terribly obvious though, with Krome having grown far too big and over-stepping its bounds and comfort zone.

I mean really, you guys have got way too high an opinion of who you are and what you have achieved and can achieve.

That's your problem... a false sense of security :).

With that language, he should have been better off working on Hellboy instead. Atta boy, Cam!
  • 30. Anonymous - Fri, 31 Aug 2007 12:26:14 EST
    Pffft! Fire his useless ass.

"my game" Funny, I thought they had a team of people working on a game?

  • 31. Anonymous - Mon, 10 Sep 2007 11:09:26 EST

This sounds like classic Australian tall poppy syndrome to me. Krome is now (by some way) the biggest independent developer in Australia and that doesn't happen just because you get lucky and all of a sudden huge publishers like Microsoft and Konami want to start making games with you. It happens because of the skills that people like Cam bring to Krome as a company. Stop bagging people that are very good at something you want to be good at and start working on what you want to be good at. Or not. Whatever.

  • 1. Anonymous - Mon, 10 Sep 2007 18:02:08 EST
I'd say they're to busy working to worry about what somebody is saying about them on a forum... What with forums being the number 1 place for accuracy.

A good article overall but grow up Cam. It's bad enough your team have to carry you without having embarrassments like this reflect upon them and their efforts.

What's going on over at Krome at the moment?

I've been told that over 30 staff were laid off this week.
