Lead Character Artist for SEGA Studios Australia

The Lead Character Artist will lead the development and production of character artwork required for our latest game. They will work collaboratively in a team, using their experience of modern asset production techniques and sound knowledge of artistic and anatomical knowledge. The Lead Character Artist will provide direction and mentoring to the character artists as well as working with the management of the studio to ensure that the overall project goals are met.

During their 6+ years experience in the games industry, the Lead Character Artist will have ideally been working at a similar level within a highly regarded development studio or have been producing character artwork for a AAA project on PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms. They will have experience leading the technical and artistic pillars of a title, working with other teams, leads, and producers to achieve a high standard of game artwork.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead a team of character artists across all major platforms
- Produce assets of a consistent quality to a agreed specification
- Support the junior members of the team, leading by example and encouraging good communication, using solid procedures
- Contribute to artistic schedules to ensure cost effective, timely production
- Support in the identification of project risks, both art and tech related and help set priorities
- When required, develop solutions that contribute to quality results within time and budget constraints
- Keep up to speed with current industry trends and cutting edge games

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

- 6+ years experience creating characters & artistic media
- 2+ years in a leadership role
- Expertise in creation of character art for AAA titles, including: modelling, detailing & texturing
- Illustration skills including knowledge of the technical aspects of drawing, texture, light and shade
- A good understanding of human anatomy
- Practical knowledge of current 3D and 2D software
- Basic practical knowledge of rigging desirable
- Can easily adapt to different art styles
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to listen but also to make informed decisions when necessary
- Art based degree desirable

- Character development breakdown, reference, base, detail, topology, UV
- Life drawing samples, anatomical studies
- Craftsmanship
