Video game censorship and the art of horror

Yahtzee has written an opinion piece on the game censorship issue in Australia at news.com.au, and how it's affecting the artistic integrity of certain genres reaching our shores. The popular Zero Punctuation reviewer cites recent games like No More Heroes and gives specific mention to the Silent Hill series of games where horror is a major factor of the experience but that aspect is watered down to fit our highest MA15+ classification. The issue is raised in light of the recent classification refusal of Silent Hill: Homecoming where it's expected to make classificaton but with a lot of the horror aspects toned down. If we willingly delude ourselves that video games are just for children and banish everything beastly and unwholesome, we miss out on something important. We miss out on a vital branch of art – the art of the grotesque, the unnerving, the terrifying.
