2006, The Year of the Gamer

The Land Down Under. We’re known for our surfers and our sheep shearers. But, as evident by 2006, the Aussie Gamer is on the rise. And we’re taking over.

A study by the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia (IEAA) has shown that 12.5 million games were sold in Australia during 2006, a huge amount for Australia’s population. You could pretty much say that over half of Australia’s population bought a game last year, judging by those figures.

The total revenue in the games industry, a combination of both software and hardware, resulted to more than $925 million, an increase over last year by 7%. This had software accounting for $596 million, and hardware accounting for $329 million – a big 18% increase from last year.

Senior Account Manager at GfK Australia, Daniel Morse, said the following:

The introduction of new systems to the market has undoubtedly driven sales with all formats performing really well throughout the year.
