Sony, the New Publisher for AFL 2006

XBoxworld.com.au has received a press release from Sony Computer Entertainment Australia revealing that they are the new publisher for AFL Live 2006. The state of the series was up in the air when previous publisher, Acclaim, closed their doors...

"Sydney, 23 February 2005 - Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Aust.) today announced the signing of a publishing deal with Australian game development studio IR Gurus Interactive for the marketing, sales and distribution of the latest installment of the AFL game for PlayStation 2. "

AFL Live 2006 will allow gamers to digitise their appearance via the Eyetoy to be placed onto players in the game. It's believed that AFL 2006 will be a Sony PS2 exclusive title. For more information, read the news item at XboxWorld.com.au!

I think if this is the case and Sony dosn't release the game on XBOX, PS2 and PC at the same time. People who placed *****THEIR IDEAS****** on the www.xboxworld.com.au forums that eventually show up inside the game should sue IR Gurus for stealing their ideas. They were placed on those forums in good faith that the game would be coming out on all formats and these people have been shafted by SONY CORP and IR Gurus for greed. Shame on all those that have agreed to this deal! Sue the pricks!!!!!

I own a Ps2 but remember we also have the best racing series ever Gran Turismo. Xbox's are pretty cool but.

Microsoft game's should realse thier own AFL, which would kill AFL live 2005/6 on ps2. They should do this in time for the PS2 realse. Call it AFL DIE PS2

As a Ps2 Owner i just pray to God that there is none of the shitty, mehcnaic gameplay we have come to expect from AFL games. In reality EA sports released the best ever AFL game with AFL 99 and it would be fantastic to see trades and some sort of dynasty mode inserted into the game. It seems a bit odd that the game will only been released on PS2.

AFL fan.....it will be released only on ps2 because Sony Australia are making it with IR Gurus so thats why it wont be on XBOX or PC

  • 8. Quiintus - Friday, April 08, 2005 - 12:24:12 AM
I think the AFL want the game to be represented properly then they have to have it, like rugby, on all formats. That's how they'll reach all the fans of the sport not by having it exclusively for one console.

They better release it on PC

I think it's about time that EA Sports gave it up. AFL Live 2004 had absolutely no potential. Thank God for Sony!
  • 12. PS2 Fanatic! - Tuesday, April 12, 2005 - 11:47:04 PM
Praise the Lord! A real AFL GAME. EA sports should really think before they create their games! I HATE EA SPORTS!

Like many in Australia, I treat AFL like a religion. AFL is a true icon of Australia.
I am an owner of AFL Live 2003 on the PC, and AFL Live 2004 on the PS2. AFL Live 2003 was a quite good effort first real try of an AFL game (excluding '99). But, AFL Live 2004 was absolutely shocking, just the general look and feel of the game is disappointing, and the glitches in that game are almost as shocking (ie. port power player names stuffed up).
Then they bring out AFL Live Premiership Edition, which there was no point of making because it had the same glitches. Its almost as if they literally made a copy of the 2004 game, added some different jumpers and about 2 new players, and charged customers S80 to play it.
Now, the developers have stated all the improvements that will be in the new AFL game, and it sounds like a good game. The have now built the hype, and lets see if they deliver. If they dont, they will have alot of angry gamers out there.

When you think of the popularity of the sport there should be more than one company making an AFL game. IR Gurus need some competition to give them a good kick up the arse!
  • 16. Someone - Thursday, April 14, 2005 - 4:20:58 PM
The polularity of the sport? in Victoria, and a few pockets across Australia. it's a niche sport, and the sales for any video game based on it are limited to a very small demographic is terms of game players!
  • 17. PC kid - Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 10:17:31 PM
i really want to have AFL on PC...not just ps2
  • 18. DUDE - Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 10:18:53 PM
Yes. I strongly agree with number 17. I really would want to play AFL on PC. And so do a lot of other people around Australia. not all people have other gaming consoles so please make it for PC

  • 24. tj - Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 11:58:35 AM
I am hoping that the game has an improved statistical / historical component where players are able to chase club and league records, not unlike an nba live style set up.

Anyone have news on that aspect?

  • 25. Partho - Wednesday, April 27, 2005 - 8:18:25 PM
Who else thought that the speckies were just crap the guy would be 2 meters away from the ball and he would get speckied they better not have that prob plus it should come out on all platforms so every1 can enjoy afl

  • 30. PS2 Exclusive, for sure - Monday, May 02, 2005 - 5:05:44 PM
Do you really think Sony, the new publisher for AFL, will throw lots of money into the development of the new AFL game (with all the new tech, face caprturing ability, official game stats) and have it release on a rival console? I *seriously* doubt it.

Have a look at another news story on this site regarding IR Gurus other game in development called Gaelic Football 2005. That is probably funded by Sony also and is a PS2 exlusive.

  • 31. Someone - Tuesday, May 03, 2005 - 11:43:12 AM
in response to Riewoldt; wow, that's really mature. name calling, ooh. my point was a serious one - (and in response to the previous post about other studios making AFL games). do you really think that the target demographic is large enough to warrant a rival title being developed? look at how few soccer games are left on the market (what, 3 or 4?), and soccer is worldwide game which sells across the world. AFL simply doesn't have that market. AFL can only sell to australians who like AFL, and who own a console.

if you disagree with the above - write a reply. or i suppose you could just call me names.

  • 32. walter - Wednesday, May 04, 2005 - 7:31:15 PM
no i think riewoldt was a wrong in the response to afl 2006 it will be a good game to it. evry1 says the gameplay feels real and looks real. it wasnt on there. theball will be red and yellow but the moisture was first. 1 2 3 4 5 8 for them. it wasnt there becasue the people had the phones.

I hope they make this game better the n what they made 2004 and premiership edition, the graphics and realistic gameplay was pretty dodgey. Hopefully it will come out as soon as possible.

Hmm.. sony doesn't like doing XBox/PC releases but IR Gurus owns the right to the AFL and who's to say they won't negiotiate with another publisher to get it out
  • 49. Souri - Monday, May 16, 2005 - 5:43:26 AM
I've read else where that Sony will publish it exclusively for the PS2 at first, and perhaps on other formats later. The name of the latest AFL game has been undecided for a while, but they have settled on AFL Premiership 2005, not AFL 2006.

i'm excited about the new afl game being released because the three previous released games annoy the hell out of me. hopefully the game will be more freeflowing with none of this mechanical gameplay. The games needs more veriety like: trading, tribuneral, etc i'm a huge football fan and i love Ps2 so i hope they can bring out a final result correcting all the downfalls of the previous games and seens that acclaim no longer produces the game i'm confident my wishes will be granted.

  • 80. - Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 4:33:13 AM
hmm.. being a developer for ps2 and xbox the last xbox comment is a generalisation.

PS2 is a interesting box to work with. Takes a lot to know how to get it to work right. XBox it's graphical ability and it's limits are well known.

What it comes down to in gaming terms though, PS2 has less memory, has less texture detail then XBox, and is a pain in the ass platform to work for in comparison, but if you know how to work with the architecture you can get some fantastic resutls which is why PS2 titles now look a 100 times better then original PS2 titles.
