eGames & Entertainment Expo Modding Competition (EGEMOD)

Submitted by Peter Barlow

The organisers of the eGames & Entertainment Expo being held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from the 17th to 19th November 2006 would like to announce the launching of their inaugural Modding Competition.

With the support of Damian Scott, modding column writer for PC Powerplay and lecturer of modding at Swinburne University there are a variety of categories to submit entries in to.

This is a great opportunity for novice and experienced modders alike to achieve high profile recognition for their hard work.

There are four categories with prizes awarded to winners and first runners-up in each category. Prize details will be announced shortly with the support of Multimedia Victoria and other companies.

Entry submissions open immediately and can be submitted via contacting media@cyberactive.com.au and providing a link to the finished work for the judges to access.

Please provide details of the category you are entering and contact details in the email. Also provide a short bio of yourself or your team and a brief description of the work provided.

You can submit as many entries as you like. You may provide entry submissions for multiple categories.

Entry submission will remain open until 5pm on the 7th of November. Winners will be notified prior to the expo.

There will be a showcase of the winner and runner-up entries along with award presentations on the Intel main stage at the expo during the weekend. This will be a great opportunity for modders and developers to show the industry and the general public what they are capable of.

This will be widely covered by the media and web-based news services.

Take the opportunity to show what you and your team can do. Submit your work and be in the running to take it to a higher level.

The specific games to be included in the modding competition are Unreal Tournament 2004, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Quake 4, F.E.A.R., and Neverwinter Nights.

Categories are Best Mod (Single or Multiplayer), Best Multiplayer level, Best Single Player level, and best Character/Weapon model.

The competition is open to any non-professional game developer(s) from Australia or a team that has a member based in Australia.

We are proud to announce the prestigious Judging Panel as follows:

Damian Scott has been modding for over 10 years. He was a member of the original Team Fortress, and created Kanonball for Half-Life, and is currently working on Steel Halo for Unreal Tournament 2004. When not modding, he teaches modding for Swinburne University.

Murray Lorden is a freelance game designer with a background of 6 years of Quality Assurance at Bluetongue Entertainment. Also a filmmaker and a musician, Murray especially enjoys the artistic and immersive elements of games, such as the setting, music, voice acting, and also how all the gameplay systems tie together to make a cohesive immersive world.

Matthew Butler is a lecturer of Multimedia at Monash University, and knows a thing or two about critically analysing game and mod development ? it's part of his job!

David Hewitt is the lead designer at Tantalus Interactive, one of Melbourne's biggest independent games development companies. He is also the co-ordinator of the Melbourne chapter of the International Game Developers Association, and remains a true believer in the oft-overlooked artistic and emotional potential of the medium.

Entries close 5pm, November 7th, 2006. Submission requirements will be announced shortly on the eGames & Entertainment Expo website.

Winners will be announced on the eGames & Entertainment Expo website on November 13th, and will be offered the opportunity to exhibit their work at the Expo and will be invited to collect their prizes in person. They will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their work during the presentation.

Good luck and see you at the eGames & Entertainment Expo between the 17th - 19th of November 2006.
