Apart from the missions and the training mode, there doesn't seem to be much different.

Just hope it is an improvment from previous years.

This game will kost likley be pretty bad and i think it sounds like a waste of money at the moment. Until they hire like EA or another company thats really good at creating sports games, i'm not gonna bother getting any more of the afl games.
  • 4. Anonymous Coward - Sun, 4 Jun 2006 17:40:23Z
Just hire the game from the video shop, and if it surprises you then buy it then :)

It's sad that IR Gurus has the license for a great sport, and have yet to deliver other than a mediocre grab and kick game. Having new art assets doesn't hide the fact that the game is incredibly shallow and limited. It leaves me to wonder if any of the designers have been to a footy game or even like AFL. Without a redesign, I'm resigned to the fact that this is just a small iteration on the previous game and seems in many ways, they are just churning it out for the sake of it.
  • 6. Grover - Sun, 11 Jun 2006 10:52:13Z
I hope they improve the gameplay hugely. I was so utterly disappointed to find 2005 even substandard to the old EA one (2001) that I used to play. I could care less about missions and silly features, I just want something nice to play. Its a bit like the new EA FIFA game - that is plain horrible, again the mechanics for gameplay (mainly controls) leave you wishing they had stuck to the older style (2002 FIFA). They have the old style input, but the actual character control is horrible.
Its sad that companies dont stick with 'tried and tested' control setups, and character movement systems. Games like this shouldnt get worse, only better... doh.
  • 7. Jabbawoki - Tue, 13 Jun 2006 11:48:59Z
True that, Grover. The last one they put out was rubbish. I would play a stick figure AFL game as long as the controls, and general gameplay, were up to scratch. It seems as though they took out all the things that made AFL Live 2004 bearable, added a whole heap of useless crap - like the tribunal and getting reported (which dont work properley anyway) and thought they had a AAA game.

It is a real shame, too, cos as IR Gurus have shown with Heroes of the Pacific, they are an unbeleivably talented group of guys. They have obviously been pushed into releasing a sub standard product by a big, mindless distributor... eh, Sony?

  • 8. Anonymous Coward - Tue, 13 Jun 2006 14:18:10Z
Heroes of the Pacific was developed by That Game, who in 2005 were merged into IR Gurus. Thats why you have the huge talent gap and the dramatic difference in the two games.

This page is a complete waste of time, for the simple reason that alot of the ideas people have thrown forward in this forum are quite good but it always is seeming to fall on deaf ears at IR GURUS. JEEEEZZZZ!!!!! IR GURUS I buy the game every damn year no matter what rubbish reviews Ive heard about the game (Just like alot of people out there you know the type the ones who actually love live breathe everything AFL).Sorry im getting off the track , what Im trying to say is alot of the time Games developers are wise not listen to every customers suggestions and ideas for the next game in a series especially if the game has had more positive than negative feedback but surely IR GURUS you dont fit in this category. Is the reason you dont seem to listen to your consumers because this is more of a side project of a game or do you make enough money off morons like myself to not give a crap about actually really improving the game. Please for the sake this beloved game of ours start from scrath after AFL 2006.As melodramatic as this may sound IR GURUS this is your last chance for me.I mean consumers do still have the power right!!.I hope for the sake of an Australian games developer people do give IR GURUS one more chance because that is more than they deserve!PS If you cant handle the heat IR GURUS get out of the kitchen. With the technology available today for games development why dont you even leave the scene for the next couple of years and come back with something worth buying!!PSS..IF your struggling to find the cash to develop something half good, why dont you ask the AFL didnt they just get a $780m TV deal surely a couple of mill would cover a half descent game and you'd make the money back that you spent if word got around that there was a 5 star AFL game for sale..PSSS...I mean its what the fans wont right the AFL are not stupid are they?!!!...PSSSS....Is anybody listening.. IR GURUS?...are you there??... I thought not......this is a waste of time!!!!

    Problem with AFL2005 is this.

Sony were pretty reasonable for the most part. For AFL2005 they decided to rewrite the engine which the game was built on. Noble idea, but they had a whole bunch of programmers caring about the technical guts of the game, rather than focusing on the gameplay. They had no non-programmer creative people working on the design etc just programmers. People who never played footy in their lives were expected to do the AI.

This year is slightly different, they had a short timeline due to the fact Sony want a game to market mid-season which is what they intended last time. They decided the best thing they could do is focus mainly on the game play. The game will run faster, but apart from some visual stuff it'll be using the same tech behind the scenes, but IR Gurus are focusing on the gameplay mostly. They brought in the producer of Heroes of the Pacific, and hired designers and many other essential staff.

So rest assured, although its probably not going to compete with Fifa the game is definately going to get better.

To (Problem with AFL 2005 is this ),
Where do you get your info about IR GURUS bringing in the producer of Heroes of the Pacific, Is there a better site out there with more info on whats going on behind the scenes in the development of AFL 2006?

  • 13. Anti Exclsuive Deals - Thu, 15 Jun 2006 20:16:30Z
Well unless you own a PS2, you want ever see this title
It will never compete with any EA SPorts or Codemaster games, even with Sony putting big bucks to get exclusive rights, so us pc and xbox users get the short end. Unless THQ is allowed to bring it out on PC, but even then I bet it won't be until the end of the current AFL season!!
  • 14. Something smells funny - Fri, 16 Jun 2006 2:37:34Z
I fully can understand sony forking out big bucks to get exclusive rights to the production of any AFL game, what i cant understand is why they cant find someone other than IR GURUS to develop the game....Isnt sony just letting thier name get dragged through the mud with each failure IR gurus produces...or doesnt sony care what they produce?....is sony in this partnership for another reason?....I really dont get it!!.....Is it a contract for a certain period of time with IR GURUS that they have to serve out??...or is it sony's name is far to strong for just one game to cause any internal dilema's? Can someone please help me...me no think straight no more me feel stupid me no comprehenda thisa company IR gurus gamesa maka me feela stupida and stupida every timea ia playa or wasta my breatha...Dont worry people who actually take this site seriousley i promise i wont write back anymore Ive had my bitch now!!!!
  • 15. Quahog - Fri, 16 Jun 2006 10:16:45Z
afl 2005 was a real let down, and i can only prey that the new game coming out is better. I think an awesome improvement, would be when someone has the ball (marked) players make a lead and then triangle, circle, square appear about a players head (SAME AS MADDEN) and then u press a button and it kiks to them, depending on the players kicking rating, will depend on how good the kik is. HOW FRIGGIN HARD IS THAT, I COULD PROGRAM THAT WITH MY EYES SHUT!
  • 16. Anonymous Coward - Mon, 19 Jun 2006 17:27:8Z
To "something smell funny", apparent according to posts from a insider from the company, in threads around here about last years product, Sony are just the publisher, IR Gurus structure there company a bit differenlly to most (slashdot put this out about heroes of the pacific), they fund the games themselves until its time for the publisher to do their bit.

So rather than it being the traditional model where IR Gurus get paid in instalments due to their milestones reached, IR Gurus pay for it all themselves up to the delivery date. Also the AFL rights fell back onto IR Gurs not SONY when Acclaim fell over. So IR Gurus are the ones with the rights, due to legal luck when the publisher Acclaim went out of business(this info is on the forums here and on their website)

Sony just want a game to sell their ps2's with.

The Game looks like it is improved but im sure most of us thought the same with 2005 but all i care about is actually creating a player instead of just sticking a face on another player the should do the same thing as the soccer games with creating players
  • 22. ir gurus struggle - Fri, 30 Jun 2006 13:35:46Z
AFL 2003 and 2004/PE were both about 50(percent) better than 2005 and 2006 will be just as average as the 2005 game. to be honest i have more fun play AFL 99 than i do playing AFL 2005. in 2005 ben cousins is black and has no hair :S. Put EA Sports back on the job and get rid of IR Gurus and you'll be set for a good game of AFL 07
  • 23. Anonymous Coward - Sat, 1 Jul 2006 14:51:51Z
Dude they cant get EA back....learn to read mate

btw....lets face it.....this game will be shit....

  • 24. IR Gurus NFI - Mon, 3 Jul 2006 18:39:54Z
I still play AFL Premiership 04. I'd rather see the same gameplay as that with new rosters and players, than play that shit they served up last year. I'll buy it and try it but it better be good. Something tells me it ain't gonna be. Hope they surprise me!
  • 25. shitdick - Tue, 4 Jul 2006 17:43:24Z
This game will be an improvement on last years, the only problems with it were the stats, the camera angles imo. But i think this year will be better although it is just as likely to be a step in the wrong direction, at least its only $80, right? Peace out, ShitDick
  • 26. Fiery Hawk - Wed, 5 Jul 2006 16:52:9Z
Folks there's been a thread running on BigFooty for a long time now dealing with AFL Premiership 2006.
It initially served the purpose of communicating with the gaming public with a goal to obtaining ideas/comments/suggestions. What happened then was feedback back and forth and some real improvement in the title.
The focus has been on gameplay this time around. Forget the marketing features, get the engine right. The goal of the game development this time around was to get the title back on the right track.
Right now the thread deals with new screenshots, videos, gameplay hints/info and there's an IR Gurus AFL madman online to answer all your questions....ME! Please take the time to visit and read up on all the new features and hidden things that a marketing blurb simply cannot explain.

We at IR Gurus are in fact listening...get on there and let us hear your ideas...head to BigFooty forums and check out the AFL2007 Talk thread

  • 29. Yogie - Mon, 10 Jul 2006 14:22:55Z
I have been playing the Herald Sun Dream Team competiton and I think that the way they give points to player would be a great model to use for giving votes for the brownlow and other medals such as best on ground for the grand final!

Does anyone know how they gave votes in 2005 game

  • 30. Anonymous Coward - Mon, 10 Jul 2006 17:20:15Z
I think from memory the brownlow count thing was just based on algorithmic process, i.e. just calculated based on who had suspensions or who did not, and just taking those who did not and randomly deciding.
  • 31. Yogie - Tue, 11 Jul 2006 8:38:39Z
So no count on possesions or goals or anything like that?
  • 32. Fiery Hawk - Tue, 11 Jul 2006 9:9:4Z
The Herald-Sun Dream Team competition uses the Champion Data stats system. It's very effective in showing how games were won and lost and relies heavily on showing player efficiency in all disciplines. Unfortunately it's (financially) a very costly system to implement and the budget on AFL games isn't big enough to accomodate it. But it's definitely worth looking at...
  • 33. Yogie - Wed, 12 Jul 2006 7:55:51Z
    Cool! Thanks for that!

So do you know how the current system works on AFL 2005 or the upcoming 2006 PS2 game?

  • 34. Fiery Hawk - Fri, 14 Jul 2006 8:30:3Z
Yep but I won't go into it here. Jump onto Bigfooty and I'll see what I can do to explain it...I'm not a coder so it could be a very general answer :)
  • 35. Yogie - Fri, 14 Jul 2006 9:49:22Z
whats the address as it didn't work last time!

    Cheers

look up bigfooty on google. Go to their forums section. Look for the Computers, Gaming & Technology area and in there is a thread called AFL 2006 Talk. Can't post a direct URL here as they won't let me.

  • 40. big footy fan - Fri, 14 Jul 2006 15:37:5Z
I have to agree with all those who say EA should be put back onto this, IR Gurus really dont have any idea how to produce a real good footy game, they spent too much time on the supposedly wizz bang extras ie bonus DVD, eye toy etc and forgot about the game itself and even went backwards in many areas, playing the game as much as i do it is just so frustrating to see how little these people knew of the game. Apparently players normally cant kick more than 40 meters, I could kick that when i was 15, and these are meant to be the elite players, umpiring is shocking, ie holding the ball is given when the players had no chance and isn't given when the did??? Then defenders rarely would seriously man up, especially if swapped off the bench or if original player went somewhere else would follow. Then the game stats went from really good to virtually non-existant. Player charateristics couldn't be more innacurate and pointless if they had tried, only meaningful one was the marking one, but also elite players went from great to crap by the end of the first season as apparently after 25 yrs of age they deteriorate in all areas at an xtremely quick rate. The Adelaide crows defence is a great example, Ben Hart and Nathan Basset, are slow as hell and their mark is useless by the end of2005 season, Ben Rutten All-Australian Full-Back 'would be beaten by every half decent forward and Nathan Bock is unplayable, this was the greatest defence in decades and their all crap. I could go on for ever about the downfalls of the game that was AFL Premiership2005, but I wont, all I can say is IR please get it atleast half right and empoy a few people who have played the game beyond under 10's.

yoy the games is cap that shite is wak
  • 42. - Sun, 16 Jul 2006 19:40:34Z
    to big footy fan:

Yeah i remember speaking to a few of the programmers at a IGDA meetup last year, and they were saying that they were put on AI of the players, and they never seen a game of footy and never been interested in the game in their lives and they were expected on replicating the gameplay from a real life game.

The eyetoy functionality as I understand it is basically already premade mostly, all the face scanning and stuff is provided by the digimask guys and the bonus dvd was made by people outside IR itself. Pretty scary really.

  • 43. Anonymous Coward - Sun, 16 Jul 2006 19:54:18Z
2005 really dissapointed me the graphics were horrible none of the players or gameplay ae realistic u cant control marks properly and kicking for goals is way too easy the games is basically based on luck no skill involved 2006 bertter be b etter or im not buyng it
  • 44. Fiery Hawk - Mon, 17 Jul 2006 9:31:37Z
Hi Folks, I'm not going to defend the sins of the past...but I can promise you that 2006 is a step back in the right direction. Get on the forums and check it out. There's video, reviews by gamers for gamers...there's talk of what to include in 2007 - it's the perfect opportunity and place to see what's happening with the game now and what's in store for the year ahead. I'm not a marketing person...just a passionate AFL fan who happens to be working on this years game
  • 45. B-retta J - Mon, 17 Jul 2006 12:55:19Z
Fiery Hawk .. I just wanna no will this years edition be worth buying ?? like the trades n things r good i reckon but why did they have to change the gameplay i play PE 2004 all day long coz i love footy .. but 2005 i played for 5 minutes and never played again .. trades would be awesome if the players actually looked half real .. if u could actually see chris judd wearin a collingwood jumper or ben cousins wearin a bulldogs jumper .. but all u see is a generic character u dont even no whos got the f**kin ball .. they shouldve stuck to the gameplay of PE 2004 but just got the graphics better ... instead they stuffed the gameplay .. n made all players lose faith in the game
  • 46. Anonymous Coward - Mon, 17 Jul 2006 13:14:47Z
Don't expect much of a dramatic improvement out of the graphics, my understanding is the graphcs engine is still relatively the same, just expect more out of the gameplay.
  • 47. B-retta J - Mon, 17 Jul 2006 14:5:38Z
oh yep no worries .. well at least gettin the gameplay back on track goes a long way to making the game playable ..
  • 48. sherriff - Mon, 17 Jul 2006 22:57:58Z
hey guys picked up the game today... SLIGHT improvements... but still basicaly the same as that shit game that is afl premiership 2005

    it's not that bad.
  • 50. sherriff - Tue, 18 Jul 2006 11:24:27Z
personaly i think they should stick to the old game engine and build on the graphics from there
  • 51. Fiery Hawk - Tue, 18 Jul 2006 14:23:13Z
so the graphics are the issue? can you go into more detail...we appreciate all the feedback we can get
  • 52. sherriff - Tue, 18 Jul 2006 22:56:46Z
IMO i just prefer the old game engine instead.. wat i ment was by keepin the old engine from 03, 04, then build on the graphics from those games..
  • 53. Anonymous Coward - Tue, 18 Jul 2006 23:54:15Z
How has 2006 been turning out for people. In terms of graphics I find the 04 ones comparable to 05 version.
