Game In a Day (GID) is a great ?totally free? monthly online event in which people make a game (or many games) in a space of 24 hours. GID is great for both programmers and artists. Furthermore, a number of teams have formed from artists helping out programmers they hadn't worked with before during a GID. Don't have a game idea? Just check the forums, see who's working on what and who needs some help.
Artists are always in short demand, and GID can be just as much fun for them as it is the programmers.
Creating a game in a day is a good way to learn about the process of developing a game, as well as just to have fun. However, it is a long, hard slog, just like the rest of game development.
GID also has a new website over at http://www.gameinaday.net/

How to join:
To join in an official GID, all you have to do is post on the website and let yourself be known. If you are capable of doing a GID by yourself, once you have your idea you can start. If you have a good idea but lack the talent in art or programming, post on the forums for people to work with.
Remember to make a note of your start time. It's fun to keep a time log as well.
Part of the fun is shooting the breeze with the other participants and spurring each other on. We all like to see screenshots, even if they're pants, so take screenshots regularly and show them off!
They also make for a great "here's how I progressed" post afterwards.
This is not mandatory, but you will get a lot more out of the experience if you do so.
A date of the 16th-17th of June 07 has been set for the next GID.
The theme has yet to be picked... there?s a poll on the site for people to vote or make a suggestion on one.
this sounds really fun.
we should make a sumea invasion team, and create something awesome. i believe some sumeans have some really cool fighter models :D maybe a fighting game =D
That would be great but i'm not sure if we could get animations in just one day.
But i'd probably be interested in joining a sumea team.
I assume that this site is US based, so it would really be June 17-18 for us.
well, from what i see, they let you use art that is already made. so if we were to have fancy premade animated models, they could still be used :D
GID was started by a couple of English GarageGames regulars who moved the action to their own IRC channel and it's been going ever since. However, the people who started it eventually got employed, so unfortunately the GIDs tapered off the last few months.
Having been there since almost the very start, I can say GIDding is extremely fun, even moreso with multiple partners (just like sex). However, it is demanding, and does require you to decide what becomes important in getting a game functional in the shortest time possible. In that respect, I would recommend Sumeans participate just to learn that skill.
Hi all.
Just to let you know, the theme for the next GID is "retro"
Hope to see some of you take part!
Thank you
