PhD in Virtual Rehab

Forum
*Virtual Rehabilitation

*An opportunity has arisen for a PhD in the area of Virtual Rehabilitation for

Stroke Patients, to be carried out with the School of Informatics & Engineering

and the Department of Rehabilitation and Aged Care at Flinders University.

The major goals of rehabilitation are the enhancement of functional ability and

greater participation in community life. Rehabilitation therapy aims to improve

motor, cognitive and sensory functions, to allow patients to participate more

fully in everyday life. Abilities and outcomes need to be carefully assessed so

that therapy can be tailored to meet individual needs. One of the challenges

faced by therapists is to provide intervention tasks that are motivating as well

as useful.

Virtual reality-based therapy is a relatively new development in rehabilitation,

but its suitability in this arena is becoming rapidly accepted. VR provides the

opportunity for experiential learning in a safe yet challenging environment, in

which the complexity of tasks can be gradually increased. VR allows for

assessment, and can be designed to be motivating and appealing to the patients.

The object of the PhD will be to develop an interactive VR simulation created

with computer hardware and software to allow rehabilitation patients to engage

in a simulated real world environment.
This is a great opportunity to apply games technology to a very worthwhile field.

Medical simulation is a multi billion dollar industry and is quickly growing. Many graduates of medical degrees (including your GP/surgeon/specialist) have limited exposure to the real cases that they are lucky enough to encounter on their shift. Couple this with a lack of mentoring (who can afford to pay a specialist to train them... let alone one on one) and you get the idea; that VR has a massive contribution to make to improving training.

In this project you could create simulations to reproduce aspects of daily life that a stroke patient would struggle with. This could be as simple as making a cup of coffee or withdrawing cash from an ATM. Giving a patient an opportunity to practice in an unthreatenning environment could significantly improve their independence and quality of life.

But if making games is all that fires your boiler... think about what it means to have 3 years FT experience choosing/evaluating/using the best VR tools and APIs.

New Presenter for Popular ABC2 Gaming Program

Forum

ABC2 SEARCHES FOR NEW PRESENTER FOR POPULAR GAMING PROGRAM

ABC2's popular gaming program is on the hunt for a new presenter. Series two of Good Game starts soon, but the program is one host short.

Good Game is searching for an experienced gamer who can cast an impartial and critical eye over games, and be able to deliver an intelligent and entertaining analysis of the game scene in Australia and around the world.

"The number of gamers in Australia is rapidly increasing", said Paige Livingston, Executive Producer. "We are looking for someone within this growing community to be the next presenter of Good Game."

Up until last year, Australian gamers were pretty much ignored by the mainstream media, treated very much as a fringe niche. But then came Good Game on ABC2 - a program by gamers for gamers.

The popular cross-platform series, hosted by Jeremy Ray (Junglist) and Mike Makowski (Kapowski), was dedicated to featuring the latest gaming news and events, top gaming tips, reviews, and interviews with game developers and the people behind the scenes. The fun continues in 2007, but alas without Kapowski.

"It has been fantastic working with Mike. He has been a wonderful and enthusiastic presenter for Good Game. Mike leaves with our thanks and best wishes," says Janet Carr, Series Producer.

"I have bought myself a suit and I am back in the corporate world. This is a huge opportunity guys! GG was the best thing I have ever done," says Mike Makowski.

Interested gamers, living in Sydney, are asked to send a 1-2 minute video of themselves to the Good Game team. Information on the technical specifications and further details on how to apply, are available at abc.net.au/goodgame http://abc.net.au/goodgame. The closing date for submissions is Tuesday 27 February.

Enquiries can be sent to the Good Game team via the "contact form" on the Good Game home page at abc.net.au/goodgame http://abc.net.au/goodgame.

ABC2 is the ABC's digital-only, free-to-air channel - a complementary service offering new, original and innovative content alongside time-shifted ABC programs. It is available free-to-air on channel 21 with a digital set-top box, or from selected pay TV services. For more information, visit abc.net.au/abc2 http://www.abc.net.au/abc2Souri2007-07-24 23:38:30

Games Programmers. Are you sick of hearing what all the "other IT guys" earn in their cushy "consulting" jobs?

Well here is an opportunity for a games programmer with 3D graphics experience to keep doing what they love, and get paid well for it.

YTEK is a rapidly growing Australian technology organization supporting Australian Defence.

YTEK has developed, and now markets worldwide, the very successful ADGESIM suite of simulation and training applications originally designed for the Royal Australian Air Force.

YTEK currently have 2 positions open on Seek, for experienced games programmers, or a sharp honors graduate in a relevant field.

Check them out here:

http://it.seek.com.au/users/apply/index.ascx?Sequence=52&PageNumber=1&J…

http://it.seek.com.au/users/apply/index.ascx?Sequence=59&PageNumber=1&J…

Also visit YTEK's website here: http://www.ytek.com.au/

For those interested in a bit of background to why I'm posting there here. I worked for YTEK for a couple of years after graduating uni, doing simulation software development for defence before getting into games programming, and I strongly believe that my experience there is what gave me the relevant experience necessary to get a foot in the door of the games industry. Though now it's easier to get into the games industry than it is to YTEK. Even though I haven't worked there for over 2 years I still have good relationships with the director of YTEK and the guys I used to work with. They're offering a 12 month contract in the job, but in my experience those contracts are always extended for the right people. The hardest thing about leaving YTEK to get into the games industry was the paycut by about half. My desire to be in games development was strong enough to get past the drop in pay. But if you're a talented games programmer that wants to see what it's like to earn a decent wage, I urge you to check this out. If you're trying to get into the games industry as a programmer and have excellent uni results but no game demo's, this might also interest you.Souri2007-07-24 23:38:54
