Of course, the sensible thing would be to use an existing game engine, but after a certain point, there is some curiosity if learning and fighting yet another game engine is really quicker that just writing something from scratch.

I had thought Sydney developers Perception were no more when their website had suddenly disappeared from the face of the earth. Ben Lenzo, Managing Director/President of Perception, has given us the low-down..
Hi,
Just dropping you a note re Perception's web site. Yes, it's been down. Our ISP, decided to go out of business without telling us, hence, no email, or website. A new site page will be up any day, with a full site redesign (I promise) to follow soon. There's some big news comin'.
It's 1984 when a small Melbourne games development company called Beam Software created something that was surely a defining moment in computer game entertainment. "The Way of the Exploding Fist" (published by Melbourne House) sold over 500,000 copies in Europe alone, and pretty much got the ball going with the one on one fighting genre. You could say it is the ancestor to combat games like Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Caliber of today. It amazed us with its pretty artwork, believable…
For those who are going to the Australian Effects & Animation Festival in Sydney (Dec 1-4), you can expect to see Mike Milne there..
"Mike is flying direct to Sydney to speak exclusively about his work on Walking with Beasts, the joint BBC/Discovery Channel series that earned him and his team an Emmy Award in the "Outstanding Animated Program" category at the presentation in LA on September 14.
Walking with Beasts is one of the largest projects that Framestore have undertaken and follows…
Queensland developers, Auran, have revealed what they are working on, which should bring a lot of joy to their Trainz fans.
"Coming this November is the "Ultimate Trainz Collection". The team have been toiling away at creating new scenarios, new content, new routes and cool new features and these have been combined into a massive "Ultimate Trainz Collection" pack that will be available in time for Christmas. "UTC" will also ship with Trainz Paint Shed, a host of new paint shed templates, most…
It's coming out in a few days, and Gamespy already has a review of Ratbags' Dirt Track Racing 2..
"My biggest criterion for judging a racing game is how well the computer-controlled cars mimic the abilities of real people. DTR2 scores big points here. The drivers behave and react like you would expect them to, making aggressive moves when the opportunity presents itself, even making mistakes from time to time."
Some other good comments in there about the game, so get on over to Gamespy and read…
Infogrames has announced that it will be bringing Melbourne House's
Men in Black 2 : Alien Escape to the Gamecube. Read the press release at Gamershell!
Way back in the 8-bit computer days, Microprose were giants. But after a poor reception in the arcade industry, and then an aquisition by Infogrames, they are finally closing their UK base. Avault has the details.
The counter on the page is ticking down, and there's 9 hours to go before we might see anything on this site, but I'm looking forward to whatever they're announcing! What is it ? Well, it most likely will be the announcement of Starcraft 2! Have a look!
** Ok, so it didn't turn out to be Starcraft 2, which I think everyone had hoped. But a third person shooter in the Starcraft universe sounds interesting anyway!
