ha ha nice, gotta have those watery eyes

Angry Man

I started this painting just after getting my new Wacom tablet. I'm trying to teach myself how to paint skin textures so Im going to use alot of reference art to see what human skin looks like and how to paint it.

This is the first human face that I have painted in colour. I think it looks alright, painting the hair was the hardest part. I think If I keep on practicing like this I should build up my skills for texturing and more 2D work.

Any comments/crits would be real helpful.

ps: Sorry it's a bit big, didn't think it would do that. Please feel free to Save Target As... to have a less closer look at it.

Submitted by Kalescent on Sat, 30/04/05 - 5:45 AM Permalink

Thats a really good piece, the only thing that sticks out to me immediately is the lack of any wetness to his eyeballs.

Submitted by Falco on Sat, 30/04/05 - 5:53 AM Permalink

Maybe thats what he's angry about, he's got awfuly dry eye's.

Thanks for the tip. In the photo his eye's are a little more closed and the detail in the pic didn't realy show the wetness that should be there. I just didn't think about it.

That's the kind of stuff I need to be learnin, so hopefuly after I have done more of these practise paintings I'll get the hang of it.

Submitted by Aloriael on Sat, 30/04/05 - 8:46 AM Permalink

One of the most impressive portraits on Sumea.

You could be more careful about the saturation of your shadows next time. They look a bit too grey and some parts of the image looks like you desaturated it completely.

Also it looks like you like to get right into the details really quickly. Maybe next time you should also try and plan out where the features are really suppose to be before you go nuts over the details....because some of the features look a bit symbolic.... maybe mirror your image and have a look at it.
The hair looks quite symbolic and flat because you did them strand by strand, try not to do that. Hair is made up of highlights, midtones and shadows.... painting it by the strand means that person has string as hair which is too thick to pass off as hair....also it looks like fur because it's too dense in some places.

I think the best thing to do is to actually study how things work....do a few self portraits because you will learn a lot more than copying a ref photo. It's good because then you'll realise eyeballs don't have a matte texture and so on.

Godo

I've haven't realy been doing much 3D stuff for a while. Leading up towards the end of last year most of the people in my class were realy getting anxious about finding work. We just kept rushing about, asking each other "Have you done your demo reel yet? Have you done your demo reel yet?"

After graduation I got a bit sick of it all and I haven't touched the computer for about five months. Now Im just gonnna start practicing and just model whaterver takes my fancy. Im also realy going to try more 2D art and learn more traditional styles of drawing and painting, so that I can make some of my own concept art.

The concept for this model came from Aaron St Goddard. He's got alot of cool concepts.

The wings and feathers are all one sided, to cut down on poly's, but I think the wings might look to thin after I finish, but I will just wait to see.

Submitted by Makk on Wed, 27/04/05 - 12:31 AM Permalink

heh, very nice Falco :)
Texture could use some sharpenin up though.

dwarfy low poly

Hey guys,

Thought id put up some WIP 3d low poly stuff for crit etc, just a head (and body) of a dwarf that ive been doing a bit in here and there last week out of boredom :) . What you see is about 800 polys and 1 512 diffuse, all crit welcome, post the rest whenever i get around to finishing it.

looks good, one of the finest game res moustaches I've seen to date [:)]
I've got a few tips and suggestions:
-his beard could do with a little more alpha stripping on it's 3/4 silhouette, and a little more shaping to the ear
-He's suffering from butterfly patterns across the mirrored seams in the texture - detail tonal change horizontally on seams, and try and give yourself an extra poly margin on the dominant side of the seam uv's so you can eliminate noticable mirroring with minimal extra uv space.
-saturate the dark areas in the skin tones a bit more to give the skin a bit more of a translucent fleshy feel. This should eliminate the "powdered cheeks" look you get from dark lighting shadowing light textured areas. (eg, tip of the nose, cheek puffs, etc)

anyways, there's a few things to think about -- he's looking good, I'd like to see him pushed that little bit further [:)]

Submitted by MoonUnit on Wed, 20/04/05 - 11:57 PM Permalink

thats really cool, the face has a lot of character to it. The point where the beard meets on the seam in the center is a bit off atm though, as Joel said the texture but also it sorta becomes a blocky shape very sharply where it juts out. keep it up!

Ill touch his head up soon n post the changes, thanks.

Submitted by tojo on Fri, 22/04/05 - 5:56 AM Permalink

good work.. you seem to have the principles down...
remember that skin has a lot of different colors in it..
not just pink.. play around with blues and greens for cool areas and reds and purples in warm areas
seems to have unwrapped nicely for a first go ..:)

Submitted by Makk on Fri, 22/04/05 - 7:02 AM Permalink

I would agree with tojo, the face needs more skintone colour in there.
Try to also get some more smoothness in there as well. At the moment its very muddy. Pick about 4 or 5 colours and lay them down somewhere on the texture sheet, and have a go with just using those colours. Remeber to stay away from black for shadows, a nice shade of brown can often work, experiement and find out!!
Also, study other peoples textures! This is something that I think can be quite helpful, especially when your new. Look at the different factors in there, try to figure what it is that makes the texture look good and why things like the colours the use, where they paint in shadows and highlights, just stuff like that. Then try applying those methods to your work.
If your still not sure of how something go out and get yourself some reference. This is good for (among other things) getting the shapes of individual parts just right, things like eyes, mouth, ears, etc
Finally as was mentioned it looks like you've done a good job of the unwrapping. Well done.

Keep at it! :)

Thankaz heaps for the crits Tojo and Makk, really helping me out. I am working on it, bit by bit, as I am in the model challenge, so most of the time is working on that. Just wondering, do you guys and gals work from a grey scale first, then apply a coloured layer and work from that, or just go into the colour straight away? Also, done some more work to it.

gooed progress, its getting better, i'm definately no pro on texturing (i've hardly ever gotten to that stage with a model). so i won't struggle trying to explain what i thnk needs correcting.

Benoit Regimbal painted one of the best head textures i've ever seen so ive added a link to his wip for the head, its preety big for a jpg (1mb) but its very detailed and helpful. definately worth a look.

nice work, its got a good composition adn the pose/action is great. my only crit is the use of black in the shadow areas, this is personal preference but from what ive seen i think most of the top painters dont use it too much. in my opinion you are better of using darker shades of colours or colours from the background. hopefully that made sense, keep up the good work, it would be nice to see some more recent stuff too

Submitted by Lechy on Mon, 04/04/05 - 12:33 AM Permalink

Thanks for the tips, I actually didn't use any black, I ramped up the contrast later on and that created the darker shadows. I do understand what you mean though. It does look a bit too dark. cheers.

i dont mind the think black too much. gives it a bit of a comic book look, though i dont know if it's meant to or not. like like it though, very nice. and i agree with denz on the foot - one of the first things i noticed.

Hi Folks
Here is a mattepainting that I have finished.

All created in photoshop (as usual) with some help from 3D max. A friend on the job created the pipes, which I then did the light and some texture for.

Thanks for the comments people.
This one image took about 70 hrs and was for a video film clip, that has yet to be released( probably not meant to talk about it!).
It had to be created in such a way as to allow the "Flame" people to put a move on the image. I have not seen the final comp, but I am sure they have done a great job.
It was a real blast working with a whole group of people with skills in different mediums. ie. 3D, Flame and Design.
I reckon working in a group environment tends to bring out better results, than simply working by yourself, plus it more fun.
Anyway, thats my 2 cents.

PS I am pretty busy with work to help out with the sumea mod. Though, its a flickle business so you never know.....

great work, the textured style and harsh lighting really suit the subject matter. one stylistic detail that i think would fit in well is blending in parts of the character into the backround, just a little bit of smoke or glow to mix the two. right now it looks slightly cutout. of course that being really picky, its a brilliant drawing and ill be look forward to more.

Frickken awesome! [:O]

Lightings great! love the helmet design too. The only glitch that sticks out to me is that his empty arms shoulder looks lifted to high - when I strike a similar pose, it feels quite uncomfortable, non-natural. Hey dude, you've done an awesome job! Texturing is awesome (especially on the armour), and the detail you've put into it all is great! However, what I think could make this model even greater is if you transfered some more elements from the concept which I think is really important to taking it to the next level.

The concept has got some great shape for the legs and that area. It would look much better for the model to follow suit and define the calf muscles, knees, ankle bones etc. Give the shoes some form too! They're kinda rounded and look like painted socks at the moment! [;)] Doing the above will make the bottom half of him look less cartoony, and give him a more dynamic looking stature.
The skin on the hand looks a bit too pinkish as well, and the thumb may be a little too long. In anycase, it's definately job well done! Fantastic work.

Submitted by Malus on Thu, 31/03/05 - 7:10 PM Permalink

Looking good man,
I pretty much agree with what Souri said but also the plume of hair is alot shorter on your model and the metals, especially the mask, seems a bit dark, you lose focus on them.

Also the sleeve seems too puffy at the shoulder, on the concept it tapers in.

Givey wires. [:)]

Submitted by LiveWire on Thu, 31/03/05 - 8:45 PM Permalink

i likes it. did you do the texture as well? the image only says model. if so then every texture i see from you is a huge leap in quality.

Submitted by Delmo on Fri, 01/04/05 - 3:21 AM Permalink

Yeah I agree souri your right on the ball especially about the shoes. I have to put more detail im my feet, usually that where I take detail out to add to other areas since the character will probably be moving. Im definantly going to try and reach that next level with the next character I create. Like malus said I did start to loose focus regards to keeping with the concept. You really need a nice model sheet to get exact to the concept art. All elements were done by me beside the concept. Cheers for the C & C.[:)]

Thats a pretty unconventional knight, which makes it even cooler. I wonder how it would look if the fabric of his shirt was a different color, my personal opinion is that the shirt tends to blend in with the rest of the armor, making it hard to see whats going on there, perhaps a different color would bring out the details more clearly. cheers.

aircraft painting

This weekends project - finally finished... I think!
Those of you with photographic memories will remember some 'SpaceRacer' concepts that I posted some time ago. Well I have revisited one of the designs, revised some details and completed a painting. I have included a link to the original sketch for those that want to see what it evolved from.

Done entirely in photoshop (actually about 10 lines on the grill at front were done in Freehand - easier, faster and more accurate for parallel, smooth, curved lines)

nice work, reminds me of John Wallin's painting style. one thing which looks a little off is the right hand part of the nose, which seems a bit skewed in terms of perspective (might just be me). thats all though otherwise its great, a nice sense of realism.

Submitted by Makk on Tue, 29/03/05 - 9:18 AM Permalink

Great execution John. Its been enjoyable watching you improve with each new piece.
Metal work is great, especially on areas where it scratches/chips.
Rocket though doesnt look up as good as the ships rendering, which is a bit weird. It might be the black bits on it as they arent rendered as sharply as the rest. Perspective on it looks like it might be a little off aswell, like the tip of it faces inwards towards the ships body. No thing major though as the perspective as a whole is quite good.
Nice colour scheme as well.

Submitted by Johnn on Thu, 31/03/05 - 9:56 AM Permalink

thanks for comments guys. All the perspective is probably slightly off as I only did a quick sketch 'by eye' for the base drawing - didn't think that It was going to become such a finished piece initially!

The black sections of the rockets are quite ambigious regarding material representation aren't they :( at the end of the day it reflects my indecision with them really - a detail I struggled with.

gotta admit MoonUnit, I'm not a fan of the pen tool in photoshop and always use a dedicated vector program for vector art, even if that requires working between 2 programs. I find Freehand and Illustrator more accurate, more flexable and faster that photoshop by miles... a lot of miles!

I'm going to attempt to do another one following the same process. If it comes out as well I'll post it up too.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Fri, 01/04/05 - 2:36 AM Permalink

oh no kidding, if you set out to do vector art then photoshop is really not where you should be heading. but its a pain to involve another program when u just want a couple of curved lines.

Cool, this is my first post on sumea. The ship design is pretty cool, but the execution seems half finished. That is what bothers me the most. I look at the weathered green paint and think cool then i see the engine and I go hmmmm. But if it is just a concept then its ok to do that. Also you seem to have a strange mix of sharp lines and blurry lines which is a bit inconsistant. cheers.

fat rabbit

been a long time since i have made anything so

about 570 tri's and a 512 texture hand painted metal sux spent a whole 2 min on it :/

need to go over it and get rid of some seems and fix some spots i aint happy with

Looks more like a grasshopper or bug rather than a rabbit. [:D]

Hehe cool stuff cookies. He looks very happy! His skin reminds me of that mushroom from Morrowind that glows like that :p

The metal looks really un-exciting though. Perhaps add some soldering lumpies where te metal joins or something? More dents and scratches and some weathering could help too :)

Submitted by RasTuS on Sat, 02/04/05 - 3:12 AM Permalink

yeah i was looking at the metal at work when i was welding and im like nah to much effort to paint welds so ill find something else ally would be easy to paint tho its shiny :D

Submitted by Anuxinamoon on Sat, 02/04/05 - 11:30 AM Permalink

LOL cookie always trying to find the easy way out [:p] You shouldn't paint something cause its easy! Challange yourself man! Thats how you get better!

The design is pretty cool.

Ty Doujinshi fanart. Shazza on a Bunyip

g'day everyone. throught i'd share this pic with you. it's one of six pics i'll be showcasting to the AIE to get in next year. this one comes under as FAN ART..dont worry.. its the only unoriginal of the six.. the others are my own creations and characters.

basicly i drew shazza in my own style and draw the bunyip as well for good measure. i sat down with the game on the consept art menu that i unlocked in it and took notes and skeatched shazza and the bunyip adapting it to my style.

the story for this being a doujinshi (a doujinshi is when a fan creates there own version of someone elses idea.. like now people write starwars books) is dark. Ty has been captured by the evil arts (or EA wink wink) and shazza is on a mission in her Bunyip to reasure him. The bunyip is now somewhat battle worn... i know you guys will proably largh at the pic but beleave me to took a good deal of time. ^^

so enjoy.

Cool. I haven't played the game myself though *hides*

Few things you might want to fix up is that her breasts are very strange looking. Try pushing them out more to the side and point the them out to the side more so they are at a 3 1/4 view. Also her shoulder joints look really large which gives the impression of them comming forward (I don't know if this is what you wanted or not)

You could also soften the picture by colouring the line art of your drawing a similar shade to the colour its outlining. It's just that the black lines look really strong against your colours as the shading lacks any strong contrast :)
Not sure how that would look, but it's just a tip. [;)]

looks cool, is that supposed to be snow or ice?

Submitted by Makk on Tue, 29/03/05 - 9:53 AM Permalink

I dig!
lots of nice stuff going on Rizo :)
It is a bit hard to tell if its snow or ice, but judging by the sharp edges of it, I guess its ice. if it is snow, you might want to get some smooth transitions between the edge of the snow and building.

Submitted by Rizo on Tue, 29/03/05 - 12:47 PM Permalink

Well actually it's ice, but since it's the first time that i deal with it.. i'm not pretty "happy" with the ice result.. when i add snow to it, it looks like icecream! [:X] Anyway, thanks for your coments! :)

Submitted by Kalescent on Tue, 29/03/05 - 7:38 PM Permalink

Hiya Rizo - nice piece of work, I missed this thread [:(]

You beat me to it by commenting on the ice - It definately looks as though your still feeling your way with a rendering technique for it. And using nature as a base - I doubt that the ice / snow would have settled in clumps like that to form gravity defying icebergs only on certain parts of the metal.

Im a fan of your work - youve got some good things going on, so when you tackle something and you admit its the first time youve tried it, it just stands out because the rest is so well done [:)]

Submitted by Johnn on Wed, 30/03/05 - 1:09 AM Permalink

I noticed you posted in ConceptArt too - I thought their comments were v.good and it looks like the ice is a common feature to comment on. getting a cool look with the overall colour theme you have picked I suspect has put you behind the 8 ball a bit to start with. I think a dusting of snow on all the horizontal surfaces (as commented in the other forum) would really help to define the space esp the ship which is under-defined... Iwanna see the icecream version too :D yum

Master and Servant entry

thought id once again post the progress of my cg challenge entry, seeing as threads over there drop like anvils. this time im going to try and enter both the 3d and 2d categories. this is my concept for the 3d so far.

Haha that's classic! [:D]

Although hes hands seem a bit too small compared to his face and feet. Oh and his forearm seems too long and skinny also ;)

Submitted by Kalescent on Sat, 26/03/05 - 9:35 AM Permalink

I absolutely love this concept. Hes so cheerful, and my thoughts are that anyone who screws with his little folk will suffer some sumo style consequence.

I think this idea will do better than most might think, should you pull of some brilliant painting skills.

Submitted by Johnn on Sat, 26/03/05 - 10:21 PM Permalink

ooh! another CG Challange- I really gotta keep an eye on that site.

Good start...potentially great start!- I would be interested in seeing more versions with different master/slave interaction. This scenario could be pushed in so many different directions with great results. it is already more interesting than many of the posts I just browsed in the 2D section (submissive figure A chained to dominant figure B)

keep the posts comming

heh, nice man! good to see something different and not so serious.
Sounds like a fun topic, whens the deadline?

Looking pretty good so far, I really like the idea. Although animating all those little fellas seems like it would be a pain in the ass (excuse the pun).

Submitted by conundrum on Sun, 03/04/05 - 10:54 AM Permalink

thanks for the reply,
the critters shouldnt be too difficult, ill just make a base mesh, rig it then duplicate it and pose them in various positions. a smallish update, still got work to do on the toes (a bit flat) but so far im pretty plaesed with it.

EDIT: sorry about the quality of the wireframe, my attempt to use an ovarlay failed, so there are quite a few missing polys in the mesh

argh!! i just let this page load as i was looking at something else, and the first thing i was confronted with when i tabed back was a fat arse!

hehehe, sorry. i like it (not just the arse, the whole artwork). i'm waiting to see the little guys. they're my favorites!

I think his crack needs some work. He doesn't look like he has a big ass crack as it's too far apart at the top.

I'm just curious about why 3d guys make everything have erect nipples.

Submitted by Sinister on Tue, 12/04/05 - 11:11 AM Permalink

Great work conundrum. I think your fat guy has a lot of characteristics of chubby buddha and I think you'd do well in using him as reference. Don't sweat the little stuff like the butt crack... he has pants on! Also get some reference on how fat guys chins roll, how their breasts sag, and what their feet look like.
A little bit of research goes a long way [B)]

Overall, it's a great concept and is looking good. It's refreshing seeing something out of the cliches. I wish you lots of luck!

Submitted by conundrum on Tue, 19/04/05 - 11:05 AM Permalink

sinister: thanks, i havn't checked out any refs from fat people but i do need to.

i forgot to post the progress on the clothes so here it is

and more reently (tonight) this is some testing while trying to develop a skin shader. i'm using lightwave so i don't have sss but there are some handy plugins aroud. this is my first attempt at a shader so its not great but hopefully with a bit of practice it will develop.

wow, its been ages since anyone replied to this thread so i havn't posted any progress. its nearing the end (three or four days left) and i'm way behind schedule but i'm still going to try and finish. this is most of the shading work on the characters completed and i'm about to begin background work. all the rendering and texturing has been done in xsi

looks great. let us know how you go.

is there a link to a thread with all the entries?

Submitted by Kalescent on Sat, 21/05/05 - 7:01 AM Permalink

These little guys are deviously planning to carry their master to the tip of the volcano and cast him into the bubbling lava arent they ? I can already see the intent of that little pygmy leading the way - hes evil, pink and waving a stick. [:O]

Their master will arise with a black helmet, digitized voice and a reduced lung capacity forcing him to breath deeply.

Good luck with the entry Conundrum, I like the idea alot. But like you say I think should you given yourself a bit more time on the background, it could have come up alot better.

Higher res textures, higher res textures < begins chant > [:P]

Love that stomach/ass dude [:O]

But I feel that theres not enough lights and darks, especially in places where metals are sitting over the skin, like the belt ares needs some shadows going on and shoulder pads / forarm guards. So clean....
