Studios chosen for Film Victoria's Digital Media Prototyping program

Company

Film Victoria have announced the recipients of this year's Digital Media Prototyping program. The successful applicants who will be sharing the $244,450 fund to create self-published downloadable titles are: Touch My Pixel, Tin Man Games, Khrob Edmonds, and Andrew Spierings.

Each of the first three Victorian-based independent studios received $96,650, while $147,800 was awarded to Andre Spierings to develop a Facebook game called Bunni Social.

Film Victoria CEO, Sandra Sdraulig, has expressed what the Digital Media Prototyping program hopes to achieve...

The Victorian game development community is world renowned for its innovation and capability in mobile games...

During 2009, Melbourne companies developed three of the top 10 selling iPhone games, including the chart topping Sims 3.

We believe this development funding will enable some of Victoria’s smaller studios to compete in this lucrative global marketplace.

The Digital Media Prototyping program is vital to this growth, ensuring that projects such as these are allowed to develop to maturity in Australia – rather than be lured, or be commercially forced overseas.

Oh man...

"During 2009, Melbourne companies developed three of the top 10 selling iPhone games, including the chart topping Sims 3."

Forget Sims3, Flight Control is where it's at - and that's exactly the sort of thing that should be encouraged - original IP, not ports of foreign companies IPs!

I don't understand what you are saying here. What have you taken exception with?

Sims 3 wasn't a 'port'.

Hey, what happened to the "Interzone Games lays off Perth staff, closing up" thread?

Is the info correct or not correct?

Congrats to all the developers who worked hard to receive these grants!

The amount given for the development of Bunni social is also a very interesting observation. It should serve as a indicator of how strong games that are focused on online social components are to grant agencies like film Victoria. Games that can create a dedicated community with the lifespan of a couple of years instead of being a game that can be finished within a few hours.

Hey folks,

At this stage it looks like we might be having another round of the Downloadable Games Initiative in April.

Please drop me a line if you've got a game you'd like to apply with here:

BTW, everything we fund is original IP, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk about studios that do some amazing fee for service work ;-)
