Ok :)

Time is drawing near and it's about time we get one off the ground :)

Sumea Meet-Up for a Thursday night dinner before the conference.

Thinking maybe some Friday night general havok as well, since there are no official evening activities planned.

Oh yea! Souri is coming to dinner - I am making him!

Submitted by souri on Thu, 06/05/04 - 10:59 PM Permalink

Hey, I thought I wasn't going to get an invite! w00t!

Submitted by Maitrek on Thu, 06/05/04 - 11:24 PM Permalink

Depends on the time for thurs as I probably won't get to Melb until 8:30-9:00 (depends on traffic too!). Unless of course I put my good car back together in which case I could probably shave a half hour or so off of that. But I'll keep my rule-bending driving habits to myself!!!

Friday night general havoc (with a 'c'?) is cool though, I am up for that!

Submitted by Blitz on Thu, 06/05/04 - 11:30 PM Permalink

Maybe it's havok (with a k) and we're gonna spend the evening doing physics simulations and experiements!

dunno :) maybe its the same as color and colour.

As for place I am up for options. Was thinking if CombatWombat was coming along it may be easier to get a list of places that are more accessable for him.

Submitted by CombatWombat on Fri, 07/05/04 - 12:12 AM Permalink

Well not looking that great for me with attending that much of the conference - my monster truck (aka wheelchair) doesn't do steps that well :-( But I'm definitely there for a sumea meetup on the Thursday! [:D]

The souri-meister and I had a quick discussion on IRC about this one a few months back - I think mexican ended up on top of our impromptu cuisine list.

Anyway, what kind of cost are people willing to spring for? (eg would $16-20 mains break the bank?) Any preferences for particular types of food? I'm happy to rustle up some suggestions for places with a little direction from the rest of y'all :)

Submitted by MoonUnit on Fri, 07/05/04 - 1:01 AM Permalink

mexican sounds good, cant give any all clears about wether or not ill be there until i have details tho. Also i understand if youd rather meet me at the confrence being a "minor" and all (16yrs).

Submitted by CombatWombat on Fri, 07/05/04 - 1:22 AM Permalink

Nah come along, MoonUnit - can't have our sumea town neighbours going hungry, after all! :)

A couple of URLs I've collected on the mexican front:

"Fiesta Mexican", South Yarra, http://www.fiestamexican.com.au
"Mexicali Rose", Richmond, http://www.wguides.com/city/84/75_150949.cfm
"Tres Tacos", Flemington, http://trestacos.citysearch.com.au

I've been to the first two, love 'em and hear the third is quite good too.

Submitted by MoonUnit on Fri, 07/05/04 - 5:42 AM Permalink

well im all for the first atm, its got a bigger vegitarian menu then the third and the second dosent have a menu on show. Yes thats right carnivores, im a leaf eater (by allergy).

Mexicans great. I don't suppose theres any mexican closer/in the city though, in case people want to avoid catching an extra train etc. ?
CW: The conference is in a CAE building, i'd be somewhat surprised if they didn't have wheelchair access?? I think it's like mandatory for educational institutions or something...

Submitted by Maitrek on Fri, 07/05/04 - 10:58 AM Permalink

Mexican ey? Sounds scary :) Shouldn't be too bad as long as the food isn't 90% jalapeno chili...

The conference is actually spread out over 3 different venues, all close by. The CAE building has access via the goods lift at the back, it seems the one, possibly both the others, do not have access (still trying to confirm this with the organisers though).

WRT the legal thing - I believe all new public buildings must have access, but other than that, it's a matter of what is reasonable for an organisation to do.

Re: extra train - I'll see if I can find something closer. I found one in Lonsdale St, but it's Lonsdale St in Dandenong (only an hour by train :)

there's a place in the city on the corner of russel and bourke street, Taco Bill which is pretty good

Submitted by souri on Fri, 07/05/04 - 11:41 PM Permalink

Nah, let's not go to Taco Bell.. that's a fast food joint [:)] They'll probably want us out within 15 minutes!

Submitted by Jacana on Sat, 08/05/04 - 12:28 AM Permalink

Naw - Vic doesn't have the Taco Bell's (fast food). It's Taco Bill for sure.

Submitted by CombatWombat on Sat, 08/05/04 - 12:52 AM Permalink

D'oh! Foiled by those evil stairs again :-/

Yeah that also looked to be the only mexican place in the city too...

Hmmm...

Submitted by tachyon on Sat, 08/05/04 - 1:04 AM Permalink

how bout we eat something else besides mexican?

Submitted by CombatWombat on Sat, 08/05/04 - 8:38 PM Permalink

Ok, I got myself a copy of The Age's Cheap Eats guide... How's this one sound:

Lebanese House, 264 Russell St, CBD, mains $13-15 (3/3 stars = "Somewhere really special")

It's about 500m from where the conference is being held.

Submitted by Jacana on Sun, 09/05/04 - 12:12 AM Permalink

lol :) That sounds good to me. Hurray for lazy!

Is there good access for you at the place, CW?

Submitted by CombatWombat on Sun, 09/05/04 - 3:18 AM Permalink

Yup no worries on access there, thanks Cheryl.

Submitted by awf on Sun, 09/05/04 - 4:22 AM Permalink

Just wondering, what is Lebanese food?

Submitted by tachyon on Sun, 09/05/04 - 7:23 AM Permalink

is it like kebabs and stuff? (my completely clueless guess)

Submitted by MoonUnit on Sun, 09/05/04 - 9:05 AM Permalink

any chance of anyone pickin us up a menu?
lebanese dosent sound like it'll have much in the way of vego

Submitted by Fluffy CatFood on Sun, 09/05/04 - 9:23 AM Permalink

I've had lebanese before and there is stuff for vegetarians moonunit falafels etc, I assume its a pretty common type food so they should serve it

Submitted by CombatWombat on Sun, 09/05/04 - 7:47 PM Permalink

Lebanese food is excellent for vegetarians - lots of dips with bread, and the cheap eats singles out their falafels (= crushed chickpeas, garlic, mint, etc rolled into balls and shallow fried) as being "as good as you'll find in downtown Beirut". (There are ~50 restauraunts listed for the CBD, and this is one of about 10 of them that are listed as having a "V" for good variety of meat-free dishes).

I'm thinking I'll go do have to do some "research" on the food there [:D] For purely selfless academic purposes of course!

Submitted by MoonUnit on Sun, 09/05/04 - 9:09 PM Permalink

ah sounds ok then, was just a bit wary because of what i know as typical lebanese food from some characters at my school.

Submitted by Morphine on Mon, 10/05/04 - 12:30 AM Permalink

Anyone here in Brizvegas going? Coz I wouldn't mind going but I'm just wondering how anyone is getting there. [8D]
