2007 GDCN Games Competition - Call for Entries

Company

Entries are now being sought for an international competition that encourages and supports Gold Coast residents interested in designing and developing electronic games. Entries can include game demos, animations, art or musical pieces.

They will be competing against contestants from Dundee in Scotland and Chuncheon City, Korea, in a competition organised by the Global Digital City Network.

The Global Digital City Network is a growing organisation of cities dedicated to promoting world-class digital and knowledge-based industrial activity among members.

Gold Coast City Council's Economic and Cultural Development Chair, Cr Jan Grew said: "The key focus of this year's competition is to encourage individual innovation and develop local talent."

"This is a wonderful opportunity for Gold Coasters to internationally showcase the quality and level of their skills. I hope that we unearth some very creative game designers, programmers, musicians and artists here on the Gold Coast.

The initial competition was held in 2005 and while this is only the second such competition, there has been considerable attention from local and international games developers and universities."

The Australian Electronic Games industry directly employs more than 1600 people and has annual revenue of over $110 million; 90% through export sales. Queensland is home to more than 40% of Australia's Electronic Games Developers. Gold Coast City Council's Economic Development Strategy is focussed on encouraging a vibrant and creative industry sector in areas such as games development. This competition complements the current range of tertiary courses available and provides an opportunity for local students and residents to showcase their talents to an international audience.

The competition website, www.gdcngamecomp.com, is now online and provides details to residents and students on how to enter.

The best entries from each city will be judged at the Global Digital City Network 8th General Assembly in Dundee, Scotland, in August.

The competition deadline is 30 June 2007.
