You will be responsible for creating, documenting and communicating game design concepts and mechanics. As well, you will be required to work with our design tools to implement game mechanics or parameters and test and tune those. You will probably be required to do a certain amount of level building or design as well though this is not the major focus of the role.

At Irrational we take game design very seriously. You should be familiar with the current state of the art in game design across a wide range of genres on both PC and console. You should be capable of analysing and critiquing game designs and using that analysis to inform your own design sensibilities. We expect you to be familiar with Irrational products and be able to speak critically about them.

This position requires a high degree of creativity. You will be required to form a 'vision' of the game and use that vision to inform your design decisions. An important part of the role is then communicating that vision clearly and concisely to the rest of the team and ensuring that they have a clear and specific mandate for their work. You must also provide a receptive ear so that other team members can provide input on the game design and feel that it is paid attention to.

Senior Console Programmer

Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented senior programmer to work on an exciting new next-generation console and PC project. This position is open to candidates with several years experience in the games industry working with current generation consoles (PS2, XBox and/or GameCube).

Irrational programmers are responsible for designing and implementing our game technology. At Irrational, programmers are a significant part of the game design process, so you should be passionately interested in game development as well as writing great code.

Irrational believes in cutting-edge technology married to great game design. We are particularly interested in programmers who have both technical skills and care about how that technology can be used to make games more fun.

Responsibilities:

* work with the game designer and the lead programmer to produce technical design documents and schedules
* write, document and test code to implement the technical design
* liase with design and art teams to ensure that code addresses their technical needs
* research technology to ensure that Irrational products remain at the forefront of games technology
* take responsibility for one or more major areas of a game or piece of technology
* supervise junior or mid-level programmers as required
* review and critique code design and implementation from other programmers

Required Experience and Skills:

* excellent understanding of C/C++

* at least three years experience working with current generation game console technology
* must have shipped at least two game title (or one game title if substantial experience in a related field)

The ideal candidate will have developed such a system for a console platform, linking it to the animation, audio and AI components where necessary.

A superb knowledge of C/C++ and OO principles is also essential, practical experience of working with middleware solutions is also highly desirable.

Lead Animator

Irrational Games is currently looking for a Lead Animator to work on its next big project.

The ideal candidate will have delivered animation on at least 1 recently released console title and will have played a major part in defining the structure and technical setup of how the animation team worked on that project.

Practical experience of 3DS Max, Character studio and Motion Builder is essential. A knowledge and understanding of motion capture is also a plus.

An understanding of scheduling and experience of supervising a team from both managerial and creative aspects is vital as this position is responsible for running a small group of talented animators.

It goes without saying that candidates must be pro-active communicators who are comfortable dealing with creative or technical colleagues alike.

The ideal candidate will have worked in a similar role on a recent game, film or TV show and should have work that demonstrates an outstanding ability to deliver stylistically and technically excellent environmental concepting skills from rough staging sketches through to painted reference that our art team can work from. The ability to work to a brief and follow a tight process without compromising the core ideas is also essential.

Strong technical art skills are highly desired with a good understanding of colour theory, perspective, drafting, lighting etc being hugely beneficial, use of industry standard tools such as Photoshop is also a requirement.

The candidate must be a superb, pro-active communicator who is happy to take direction and through example communicate that message clearly to the rest of the art and level construction team.

Senior Console Programmer

Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented senior programmer to work on an exciting new next-generation console and PC project. This position is open to candidates with several years experience in the games industry working with current generation consoles (PS2, XBox and/or GameCube).

Irrational programmers are responsible for designing and implementing our game technology. At Irrational, programmers are a significant part of the game design process, so you should be passionately interested in game development as well as writing great code.

Irrational believes in cutting-edge technology married to great game design. We are particularly interested in programmers who have both technical skills and care about how that technology can be used to make games more fun.

Responsibilities:

* work with the game designer and the lead programmer to produce technical design documents and schedules
* write, document and test code to implement the technical design
* liase with design and art teams to ensure that code addresses their technical needs
* research technology to ensure that Irrational products remain at the forefront of games technology
* take responsibility for one or more major areas of a game or piece of technology
* supervise junior or mid-level programmers as required
* review and critique code design and implementation from other programmers
* contribute to the ongoing evolution of the software development process at IGA.

Required Experience and Skills:

* excellent understanding of C/C++
* good understanding of OO design principles
* at least three years experience working with current generation game console technology
* must have shipped at least two game title (or one game title if substantial experience in a related field)
* communication skills and interest in working with our game developers in a cooperative team environment
* commitment to code quality, documentation and sound testing proceedures
* interest in game development and game technology

Additional Experience and Skills (desired but not necessary):

* tertiary educational qualifications in computer science and mathematics
* working knowledge or better or 3D rendering principles including principles of rendering pipelines, 3D transforms and linear algebra, DirectX APIs and current generation 3D graphics hardware and drivers.

Design Director

Irrational Games Australia is looking for a talented senior game designer to work as Design Director on upcoming next generation console and PC titles. You will be responsible for creating, documenting and communicating game design concepts for one or more titles. As well, you will be required to work with our design tools to implement game mechanics or parameters and test and tune those. You may be required to do a certain amount of level building or design as well though this is not the major focus of the role.

At Irrational we take game design very seriously. You should be familiar with the current state of the art in game design across a wide range of genres on both PC and console. You should be capable of analysing and critiquing game designs and using that analysis to inform your own design sensibilities. We expect you to be familiar with Irrational products and be able to speak critically about them.

This position requires a high degree of creativity. You will be required to form a "vision" of the game and use that vision to inform your design decisions. An important part of the role is then communicating that vision clearly and concisely to the rest of the team and ensuring that they have a clear and specific mandate for their work. You must also provide a receptive ear so that other team members can provide input on the game design and feel that it is paid attention to.

As Design Director, you will not only be directing the work on the design team but also providing design parameters to the art and technology teams. You must be capable of critiquing the game art as it pertains to the overall creative direction of the project. Similarly, you must be capable of providing a creative direction to the technology team.

You will work with a lead designer who is responsible for scheduling and managing the design team. You will not be directly supervising the game design team but rather will work with the lead designer.

Finally, there are a wide variety of miscellaneous other tasks associated with this position such as speaking at conferences, working on game documentation and manuals and PR duties.
