More Info:

The Lead Artist is responsible for crafting the art assets for the game. We are primarily looking for someone experienced in environment art, 3D modelling  and texturing, and 2D asset creation.
This role will be required to plan, experiment and develop various 3D art resources, assets and collaborations, under the direction of the Art Director. You are comfortable in exploring various styles, including expressionist environments, as well as taking on feedback and direction from the Art Director.
You will also be responsible for establishing documentation, as well managing situations that impede production objectives. As the Lead Artist, you will be expected to consult with team members and run collaboration and  brainstorming sessions to support their creative input. The game is being built in Unity 3D and will require both 2D and 3D assets.

We have unique workflows, systems and protocols in place that prioritise cultural safety, and as such we are not expecting you to “get an entire game done by X time”. At this stage the game is in development and co-design processes with community & the Art Director. This short term contract is to allow you time to collaborate with the artists & Art Director on a small collection of assets for the game art- not a finished game.

This role reports to the Art Director, Project Director & Gamerunner/Producer. There will be additional aspects of the role that report directly to the Blak Cloud Board.

The GUCK office is located in Footscray, Melbourne, Australia. However we will accept remote work for the right applicant.

About the Role:

This is a casual, paid part-time role. The pay rate is $50 AUD per hour with a general requirement of around 14-20 hours per week. There is a scheduled collaborative work day on Tuesdays with the full art team, however other hours are fully flexible. This is a short term contract of up to 10 weeks, with possibility to extend.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Environment art: backgrounds, assets and other elements

  • Building up the art direction for the project; bring the art direction of the game to life by working closely with the Art Director and the Technical Artist

  • Creating 3D and 2D assets (Props, Environments, Characters, Textures…)

  • Participating with the Lead Developer and the Technical Artist on the development of the pipeline and the tools needed to complete successfully the art production

  • Participate in creative brainstorming sessions & feedback sessions

  • Managing and supporting a 3D/2D artist team (with support from the Producer & Art Director)

  • Overseeing and organizing the art production to meet the requirements in terms of quality of the project while respecting technical, time and budget constraints

  • Guide and collaborate to implement into our production pipeline

  • Provide feedback to internal artists to help grow their skills

  • Liaising with the Project Director & Blak Cloud staff to oversee the asset pipeline

  • Work closely with the Art Director, Artists, UI Designer, GameRunner, and Game Designers

  • Attend team meetings

  • Ask for support when you need

  • Contribute to QA and general player testing as required

  • Support the rollout of the Invite-only Beta program for the game: talking to players and gaining feedback

  • Build relationships with players, potential players, industry professionals and journalists

  • Stay up-to-date with digital technology trends & games

Job Requirements

  • Ability & experience working as a 3D Artist on at least one title, with experience working on environments

  • Strong knowledge on current 3D software (Blender, 3DSMax, ZBrush, Substance…)

  • Knowledge & experience on game development processes, the constraints and the interactions between all the trades of the production

  • You have a great team spirit, enjoy collaboration & you are proactive

  • Eye for lighting, color and detail

  • Strong planning and prioritization skills

  • Experience working remotely by using things like Slack, Discord, Google Docs, Zoom

  • An interest and genuine passion for games

  • Strong creative and experimental art skills

  • Respect for Cultural Safety - and willingness to participate in paid training to learn more
