Ultimate Studio is a Melbourne based games studio on a mission to build remarkable long lasting games. To do this we want to bring passionate and talented people together, and give them the resources, time and space to focus on building games. We are currently looking for driven developers to join our experienced teams to help shape and build two high fidelity action PC games using Unreal Engine. Ultimate Studio is also a remote first workplace built on trust that caters for flexible working hours.


As a Combat Designer, you will have a key role in shaping the intense and thrilling combat experiences for our upcoming co-op third-person shooter PC game. Your focus will be on designing and implementing engaging combat mechanics, tactics, and systems that contribute to the overall player experience and align with the game's vision and narrative. You will work closely with cross-discipline teams to bring your combat designs to life, leveraging your expertise and creative problem-solving skills. This full-time position requires a deep understanding of game design principles, strong collaboration capabilities, and the ability to inspire and captivate players through innovative combat gameplay.


  • Lead the design and implementation of combat systems, mechanics, and features, ensuring they align with the game's vision and narrative.
  • Collaborate closely with programmers, artists, and other team members to translate combat concepts into engaging and immersive gameplay experiences.
  • Create detailed design documentation, including combat mechanics, abilities, AI behavior, balancing parameters, and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to establish technical requirements and constraints, ensuring seamless integration between combat design and other disciplines.
  • Help conduct playtesting sessions and gather feedback to iterate and refine combat designs based on player experience and data.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior designers, fostering their growth and development in combat design.
  • Collaborate with QA to identify and resolve gameplay-related issues and ensure a polished combat experience for players.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in combat design and game development.


  • Proven experience and a track record in game design, with a specific focus on combat design and player engagement in the action genre.
  • Strong understanding of game design principles, player psychology, and engagement techniques related to combat gameplay.
  • Experience in coordinating and collaborating with designers and multidisciplinary teams to achieve design goals.
  • Proficiency in working with Unreal Engine or other comparable game engines.
  • Understanding of game development pipelines, processes, and workflows.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
  • Effective time and workload management, with the ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on combat-related challenges.
