Of course, the sensible thing would be to use an existing game engine, but after a certain point, there is some curiosity if learning and fighting yet another game engine is really quicker that just writing something from scratch.

New client and server updates for Half-Life and Counter-Strike (Half-Life 1.1.1.0 and C.S. 1.5) will be released this week. The Age has a nice list of their best 50 video games of all time.. and as the first paragraph of the article says, it sure is open to much debate. ;)
Personally, I would have put Tony Hawk (#48), Metal Gear Solid (#32), Street Fighter 2 (#30), Elite (#28), and Counterstrike (#27) much much higher.. and push back Halo a bit, and Myst (#12) way out of the top #50 :).. oh, and Tetris as #2..

Here is some of my old work.. the first pic is of a 3d model of a human head I was working on about 2 years ago in 3dsmax, using nurbs. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't model a head with nurbs - it just took way too long for me. I'd go with box modelling. I also did a head earlier with patches. Never again.
