Sumea Challenge #8 - Tojo - CH#10

  • ok .. i think i have an idea.

my guy's name is going to be presto.. he will be a vaudeville magician / prestidigitator and illusionist.

his calling card will be a magic trick, a tarot card or rabbit or something.

    and i will…

Ok,
here goes..

'Billy the Fist'

My entry is based around the 'classic gunslingerwestern hero ough guy

not sure if i am going to make him kinda brutish like the one on the left... or more of the classic mans-man cowboy... i will probably leave that open until i start modeling..

Pretty self-expainitory really.... he has big fists...

loads up a kinda big bullet/canister full of fuel into belly cylinder/chamber (not sure how) .. then kinda fires a round ... sending heat and energy to his iron fists.... then smoke exits out the exhausts on his back..

...kinda left that open for a possible smoke screen attack??? not sure if that is allowed..??

...and then of course he has spinning blades where usually spurs would be..:)

righty then, thought i would post an update... long over due

... the bulk of the model is mostly done..

i have a long way left to go with the detailing though

ill try an update a bit more regularly as i go through the detailing process..

i am happy with the way it is going.. on target with the concept i think..

caseyjones... yeh, i know what you mean..i will probably have to do something similar... still havent thought about it yet though... got my head stuck in the sand in regards to shaders at the moment...

getting there..

most of the pre-zbrush work done.. (arms need a bit of tweaking and a bit more detail in boots and pants) ... but pretty much there otherwise..

not going to spend too much time in zbrush though...

i am thinking that too much detail may kill its simplicity...

but we'll see i guess..

also need to make sure i have enough time for texturing...

Haha, very cool concept man. I dig the physique and all the various old west elements you've incorporated into the design. Good luck!

Submitted by caseyjones on Sat, 17/06/06 - 12:40 AM Permalink

Awesome concept dude. I like the hand warning near the blades, thought it was a good touch.
The firey fists are great, and it gives the character their 'special' move or ability. Looking forward to seeing this one in 3D for sure!

This design is the shit.

Love the branding irons on the fists.

Highly creative. Conveys a real sense of power.

Love this guys head - similar styling and exagerations to your last entry I think. Look forward to seeing how it turns out dude [:)]

if the style translates over well, this is definitely going to be a really strong piece, great job!

Submitted by WAR HEAD on Mon, 19/06/06 - 7:28 PM Permalink

Yup. Really liking the concept. Very original. I think you should stick with the exagerated cartoony style when doing the textures and 3D stuff. It will look very cool. I prefer the one on the left as it suits the style of the concept well.

Holy crap that looks wicked! [8D]

Can't wait to see this modelled.

Submitted by tojo on Tue, 20/06/06 - 6:57 PM Permalink

cheers dudes..

caseyjones>>yeh .. thats the idea with the flaming fist (special kinda heavy punch).. although i am not yet sure how i am going to pull off the texture on them ... might kinda make the whole fist kinda iron... rather than skin color...

J.I. Styles/WAR-HEAD>> i am going to try and stay as original to the concept as i can.. really want to see the stylization all the way out to the end... we'll see what happens though

Submitted by caseyjones on Fri, 23/06/06 - 1:47 AM Permalink

I'm having a glow-like effect on my character's fists. But instead of just texturing the glow on, I'm going to build an extra set of geometry around the hands/fists. Then just use alpha maps to make it transparent and then texture them to look firey and glowing. It might not make sense, but I'll probably draw up a quick diagram when I get home to show you what I mean. It could help, or might inspire you to do another way with similar principals.

agree with above! very original concept..
and good start on modelling... Are you modelling him already in his final pose?
can't wait to see more! :)

Submitted by tojo on Mon, 28/08/06 - 7:52 PM Permalink

cheers guys,

kakikukeko: no, i just turned his torso for a quick kinda action shot... although his arms will be modeled in more of a boxing position than straight out, cos that is the position he will be in the most

Such a cool entry, it may be the angle from which the render has been made but in the concept the legs seemed to come in more at the hip. I dont want him to lose his allmost lanky ellement, its really cool :P

The best entry so far in my books, nice job man.

I have to say I like the cowboy boots in your concept much more than the model. They have a thicker chunkier feeling which I feel got lost in translation somewhere.

I think you could have balanced out the contrast in the colours a bit more, as my eyes go straight to his boots when I look at him - which could be balanced out by either reducing the saturation of the orangy / yellow or increase the contrast of perhaps the gas tank or gloves.

Nice job man I think youve taken this competition out.
