Sumea Challenge #8 - poppin fresh - CH#12

Okay I have re-organised my thread, I am trying to keep to the high standards set by the rest of you.

Last update: 02/10/06

Ok final entry,D.Dekker in his 3d form.
1 Broken graphics card and countless other events have not stood in my way, so here is the slightly rushed final piece, lots of stuff I would like to fix on it still and I wish I had more of a chance to post my progress. My internet is shaped so I hope it is fast enough for me to upload in time.

Sumea Entry for 2006- Work in progress.
Character title: D.Dekker (The Dread Pirate)
Description: Giant muscle bound pirate with a cannon and hook replacing his missing arm.

Concept Story Illustrations:
Here is some of the backstory stuff I did just on my own whims.

You've obviously enjoy the pirate idea more, but I personally would have take the Mexican wrestler avenue. Just find them more interesting than pirates I guess.
Great start all the same!

Yeah concept wise but from a model perspective I can find myself doing far more interesting things with an over the top pirate character.

You stole my pirate idea dean!

I think the wrestler idea is much more in the vein of the fighting game theme for this challenge. I haven't seen many martial arts characters so far, strange considering the theme. The pirate is a bit more 'way out' and has been done in a bit more often eg - Guilty Gear (can't think of the name), World Heroes Perfect (Captain Kidd), Soul Calibur (Cervantes) among others. Lucha Libre characters show up in Virtua Fighter 5 (unreleased) and Dead or Alive 4 but there's something quite exciting and unique about smaller, more athletic wrestlers who throw themselves around with reckless abandon. I think you could really go nuts with the wrestler.

Mitch you didn't invent pirates, Lucas Arts did with Monkey Island.

In regards to what seems to be my less popular choice well all I can say is while the wrestler may be a cool character at the end of the day I am making the model not the real fighting character and I think I will find more personal challenge in doing a highly detailed un-masked buff pirate, I have never done a beefy male model before so I like the idea of it and the fact that pirates have been in fighting games before is a fairly big non issue with me since mexican wrestlers have too (DOA4).
End of the day I find him a fitting over the top fighting character who I can realy make fit the fighting game part, cliche much? Sure but fighting game characters are on the whole highly cliche, thats why we all love them.

Also I have already started on the mesh :)

*UPDATE*
Okay been a while but I have recently gotten a job (and been sick with an ear infection) so I have had no time to think let alone work on this but now things have settled down a bit.
I am working on 3d architectual visualisations so it is good to stop looking at buildings and get back to anatomy.

So yes I have been playing with my lowpoly mesh a bit when I have gotten chances and doing sketches in my lunch break at work.
No sketches to go up right now but I want to scan in some of my other concepts soon since I am rather ashamed of the quicky I have up now.

The character design has been updated:
I have aged him.
Given him a nice little pointy beard to draw his face out and make him look more cooky.
Finalised his hook design which is now a canon arm to fire the hook on a chain.
Removed the peg leg since it was a little overkill.
Have been working on his tattoo designs which are now based on oceanic cartography which should look realy interesting and have a very traditional feel.

I have a backstory written up and I want to include little thumbnail comic panels with it so stay tuned for that:)

So yeah too much talk here is the current low poly mesh:

Here is my high poly that I started this afternoon:

Would love any tips on it as this is the first bulky male I have worked on.

Lookin great, Im a BIG fan, BIG BIG fan.
Good progress you have here, straight into the model and no stuffing around.

I was a big fan of the peg leg, but I can see why you thought it was overkill. It?s a very clich?d pirate feature. Still though, aren?t those clich?d features what made pirates what they are today, I know your skill level and I?m sure you could bring that peg of a leg to the table with some new ideas.
*I keep thinking of him jumping on people with that peg leg and crushing their bones with a force never before seen in a man!*

Also I?m just wondering have you thought about adding any jewellery?

Again it's looking great; I would definitely select him in a fighting game over Kilic, keep up the good work!

Thanks Stefan for the kind words, you really should come to Brisbane for the conference if you get a chance.
Yeah there are pros and cons to the peg leg, in the end it just didn't seem to work :(
As for jewellery I was planning for some to start with but then I moved away from that idea, will see how it goes but I am thinking to keep it more minimal functional pirate (with a giant hook) but I am again contemplating some trinkets.

Anyway update time, I have sorted it all out so my thread can be as tidy as all you other great people, you may notice I have posted a few images as a kind of backstory to my character since I got a little carried away with the concept, now thats out of the way (and I am also well again) I can get back to the model.

Well I am all inspired after catching up on all the other work you guys have posted so I am hoping to get some sit down time working on the model soon so that I can post lots of scary pirate pics.

Tonight is the IGDA catch-up in Brisbane so I hope to see a few of you there, I wont be able to attend the start but will certainly show up later in the night, see you then.

My apologies for my late entry (guess I am too late by now) have been trying to submit but alas internet woes.

Well here he is plenty rushed but done so I can get to work on something else.

D.Dekker has cost me one graphics card so the first thing I will do now is upgrade my machine in time for next year.

Good to be a part of it and I wish I could have updated more often and gotten helpful advice but since most of mine was done in the last few days I had no time to post realy.

I am realy blown away by some of these entrys, best year ever?
