Our track record is proof of our “quality over quantity” approach – we genuinely care about the games we make. We have an irrational obsession with polish and creating a fun entertainment experience, and we’re looking for a Marketing Co-Ordinator who wants to help us get the word out through an innovative mix of PR and social media campaigns. This is a new position due to the growth of the publishing side of our business, commencing ASAP.

Normal office hours will be standard, however some early mornings, late evenings and weekend may also be required around launches or to align with our international audience and contacts. Some national and international travel may be required.

Who we're looking for

* You have at least 3 years experience in a similar consumer-facing role, ideally in an entertainment or online content company.
* You have a relevant degree in marketing or business.
* You communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.
* You have strong experience in PR and social media and an understanding of long tail sales and ongoing relationships via online communities.
* You combine creative flair with an analytical mind. You’re an ideas factory but also believe in measuring the effectiveness of strategies. You have a good grasp of stats and metrics and aren’t afraid to use them. You continuously improve processes and campaigns based on outcomes.
* You manage your own work and meet commitments you make.
* You’re interested in internet and tech trends. An interest in games is essential.

What we can offer you:

* No suits, no meaningless buzzwords, no bull.
* The opportunity to work with a genuine world leader, marketing fantastic products that media and the public are already interested in.
* A great, professional but laid back team environment with some of the smartest and most talented game makers anywhere.
* Light, open-plan modern studio environment in central Richmond location, awesome coffee immediately across the road. Many local cafes, restaurants and shops.

You will take each project from brief to finished site (with help from others where needed). Some graphic design work, eg marketing materials, branding and collaterals is also possible.

I'm catching up on the news I've been meaning to post since I was away last week, so apologies in advance if you've heard (and I'm sure most of you have) of the following news items I will be posting tonight.

A big congratulations must go to Firemint for scoring yet more awards for their immensely successful titles, Flight Control and Real Racing, this time at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2010, held just last week. They've received two very prestigious awards from Apple themselves, marking the first time any developer has received more than one award at their annual Apple Design Awards. The Melbourne games developer received an Apple Design Award for their Flight Control iPad app, whereas the other design award was given for their iPhone app, Real Racing.

Of course, the crew over at Firemint are pretty pleased with the news, releasing the following statement to press...

We are absolutely thrilled to have been honored with two incredibly prestigious Apple Design Awards for Flight Control HD on iPad and Real Racing on iPhone. Firemint is the first company in the 14 year history of the awards to have two winning apps in one year.

Flight Control HD is the iPad adaptation of Firemint’s massive iPhone hit that invented the “line drawing” genre, and introduced numerous tweaks to make it a perfect fit for the iPad’s larger display. More information about Flight Control HD is available at http://firemint.com/flightcontrolhd.

Real Racing is Firemint’s ground breaking iPhone racer, which redefined player expectations for what is possible on the iPhone. More information about Real Racing is available at http://firemint.com/realracing. Players can download a free lite version with limited content, Real Racing GTI, from http://firemint.com/getapp/realracinggti.

The awards were presented at a ceremony at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco on June 8, and included 5 awards for iPhone apps and 5 awards for iPad apps. The winning apps showcase the best technology adoption, design and user experience, innovation and performance. More information about the Apple Design Awards: http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/ada.

Gamasutra have re-printed an article that appeared in Game Developer Magazine late last year which lists 50 of the most important contributors to the games industry. The people who made the list are from a whole range of fields, from art and design, independent to triple A game developers.

Joining the list which includes the likes of Steve Jobs, Will Wright, and Peter Moore, are two local Australian game developers. They are indie developer, Farbs, and Firemint CEO, Rob Murray. Congratulations, guys!

Jarrad Woods

Captain Forever

Captain Forever developer Farbs has had about eight years of commercial game development experience at companies like BigWorld and 2K Australia -- on either canceled or unreleased games.

But in his free time he started making independent games, and the fascinating and transgressive ROM CHECK FAIL -- which mashed up classic arcade games in cheeky ways -- was just the start, a Grey Album for games, if you will. His new project, and his first as a full-time indie, Captain Forever, won the IGF China Best Game award for the top Asian-Pacific indie title.

Rob Murray

Firemint

Melbourne-based Firemint is pointed to as one of the big winners in the iPhone and iPad development scene, and rightly so. While the studio has done work-for-hire for publishers in the past, it's really starting to break out with original IP.

The company has two games that have apparently grossed over one million dollars, in two very different price brackets and categories. There's the casual, pick up and play 99 cent Flight Control (now over 2 million sales!), and the bigger budget 3D, fully optimized Real Racing, which has sold for $6 to $10. CEO Murray has successfully diversified his game sizes and revenue streams in a smart way, and it seems to be paying off.

News

Last Friday, Firemint officially announced Real Racing HD and Flight Control HD for the iPad, just in time for the North American weekend launch of Apple's highly publicised tablet computer. However, if you had been following all the media frenzy in the weeks before hand for the iPad, this would not have been too suprising to you.

While game developers do expect a pleasing number of game sales on a new game platform simply by having a title available at launch, the amount of exposure that Firemint's two new iPad games received leading up to the iPad launch date and after is nothing short of phenomenal.

From leaked pictures of iPad appstore, to the iPad games reviews on all your favourite news / games / gadget websites after launch, Real Racing HD and Flight Control HD made a prominent appearance in many, many places. If there was an "Essential App for the iPad" list compiled somewhere, you can pretty much guarantee that one of Firemint's games made it in there. Hey, Real Racing HD even made an appearance on Good Morning America...

"You really had the sensation that you were driving" -- Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, discussing her time playing the iPad's Real Racing HD

You simply cannot pay for all that publicity.

So, is it any surprise to hear that Firemint have just announced the incredible iPad launch success of Real Racing HD and Flight Control HD? From the latest Firemint press release...

Hot on the heels of the iPad launch in the US, we're absolutely delighted with the response to our two iPad games. Real Racing HD is the #1 paid game as well as the top grossing game and #4 grossing app overall, after Apple's own Productivity apps. Flight Control HD is also performing very well, as the #4 paid game. It's an incredible result for us as an independent medium-sized studio. We bet big on Apple's iPad by developing new features and content for both games, and creating worthy showpieces for a beautiful device. It's a fantastic feeling to see that leap of faith being rewarded by iPad owners who are embracing our games.

We were also interested to see that both iPad games sold a small number of copies before iPad was available in stores, as well as selling in countries other than the US.

Congratulations must go to Firemint for the incredible achievement, it probably helped that those games are actually awesome as well :)
