tsumea modeller challenge 10 - Tojo

Journal Category

ok .. i think i have an idea.

my guy's name is going to be presto.. he will be a vaudeville magician / prestidigitator and illusionist.

his calling card will be a magic trick, a tarot card or rabbit or something.

and i will take reference from moulin rouge and carnivale

his suit will be a latex/ modern batmanish material but will draw from the genres mentioned.. ie.. will probably be purple pinstriped... with 1890's vest or something

he will probably have flaming red hair which curls around on either side (a bit like wolverines).. a middle part, and a strong man mustache..

... two rose cicles on his cheeks maybe a bit like the 'saw' puppet dude .... and probably eye liner..

maybe a coat with tales

Submitted by tojo on Sun, 14/09/08 - 8:28 PM Permalink

umm.. i changed my mind

im going to do a guy called 'pestilance'

who is a pest control guy, who spreads disease through insects and the like..

he will kinda spray them out of a backpack fitted with some sort of propellant canister/bug catcher tank on his back through a nozzle and hose..

Greetings (Ford 1930 model)

Hello to all of you guys. I am not in area (not yet should I say) but I wold certainly love to move there- that's why I joined community in first place. Honestly- it was a contest that caught my eye but since its restricted to people that are already in there I will just hang around, trying to show some of the stuff I am working on.

Here's a little, 4 days gig I did recently. Ford 1930 model, geometry only, for animation. Modeled in Blender (my first paid gig using this soft, so far I was die hard Maya use), rendering in Yfray. Customer did not provided blueprints so I had to model just following photos but in the end it came out quite acceptable.

Awesome work, man. I don't think you'll have much trouble finding work in Brisbane!

Submitted by syaped on Mon, 04/08/08 - 8:42 AM Permalink

Thanks guys :) I think I've been doing 3d seriously for about 5 years now.

Really nice work!

If you have trouble finding a job (which I'm sure you won't). You could always try indie game development.

Some mates and I have started our own company and currently doing work for hire etc. We do it all for free, but things are looking on the up and up, so hopefully that could change soon :). http://www.abberant.com.au if you are interested...

If not - best of luck, hope to see you around the brisbane game dev scene soon!

Submitted by Zoid on Wed, 06/08/08 - 8:36 AM Permalink

some (ok, all) fantastic work there mate, well done! Seeing work of that calibre always reminds me how much I still have yet to learn...

Nice to see some great 40k models in there as well. I'm trying to do some 40k stuff as well (nowhere near that detailed just yet), as it's familiar, therefore good learning material for me.

Submitted by syaped on Thu, 07/08/08 - 8:03 AM Permalink

Thanks for all the compliments guys :)

Abberant man - I actually already sent an email haha. Thanks for the heads up though. If I can't find a job maybe I'll send another email your way :)

Zoid - Thanks ;) Glad you like the 40k stuff, it's my favorite universe to draw inspiration from. As you can probably tell it's my dream to work on a Space Hulk game :D

Game Character

Journal Category

3D model for a game character I will be importing into UT3 engine, will post animation sequences soon.
Please comment.

Submitted by griever on Tue, 29/07/08 - 1:26 PM Permalink

I think it looks quite good.
How many triangles are characters normally made up of in UT3?
Also, have you heard of the "Joan of Arc" tutorial?
I got about half way through that before giving up.
I'm not a professional artist though.
Anyway, it taught me a lot about 3D modelling etc.

Just a quick question, what program did you use to model this character and how long did it take?

Submitted by robert-fraser on Tue, 29/07/08 - 11:53 PM Permalink

Hi griever,
thanks, glad you like it.

As for ut3's poly count limits thats a pretty tricky question.
This forumn can explain a lot more than I can in one post.
http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?p=1370611
But generally I would say between 6,000 and 12,000 triangles.

I just saw that joan of arc tutorial it's pretty good, i learnt off similar but not as in depth as that one.

I used Maya for modeling and Photoshop for texturing and it probably took me 2 days of concept drawings, 2 days modeling and 2 days texturing so not too long but it's not overly complicated either.

Submitted by Kanga on Tue, 29/07/08 - 9:35 AM Permalink

but its a boring shot. Nothing to look at.

If the job is in China, model a unique looking sci-fi cityscape outside the window of a chinese city. Make it a focal point of the shot. ie turn your camera a bit, and show off your creativity.

Submitted by griever on Tue, 29/07/08 - 1:13 PM Permalink

I really like the lighting, especially against the back wall with the posters.
Quite well done.

This is what da guy in china wanted i couldnt choose..his paying so he gets to decide...once again thank u for the feedback

Submitted by Kanga on Thu, 31/07/08 - 10:20 AM Permalink

I misunderstood. I thought it was for a 'job application' and therefore you were trying to wow them. I didn't realise there was a strict stipulation about what the art needed to have.

Submitted by souri on Thu, 31/07/08 - 10:25 AM Permalink

I love how it looks lived in and not too clinical and straight lined "perfect"

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 14/08/08 - 11:26 PM Permalink

i made it sent it off to china and i was supposed to go to china and work on good money but i turned them down because of family reasons but that was my chance to break into the industry and i didnt take it if only one of these mother fukin melbourne studios would stop been so tight and give me a chance i wouldnt have to travel to da otherside of the world for work

Nice model, though I think the blue paint vRay car paint material is a little wierd though. But still look's nice :)

This a awesome model man. Check out Christophe Desse, http://www.xtrm3d.com/
He does great renders of oldschool cars. He has free scene on his website so you can look at his shader network/lighting setup. He also has a great gnomon tutorial about from a few years back.
Keep up the good work :D

Submitted by AveryMarriott on Thu, 01/03/18 - 1:57 PM Permalink

I joined TSUME after I saw your RX3 model. I wanted to express how much I like the model, and also to find out if you are a rotary enthusiast. I was very happy to see the model in blue. Do you own a Mazda?

I'm going to be a bit picky here. I like image 1, but the border of the upper lip seems a bit 'stuck on' and her mouth just seems way too wide - I think the edges and corners of the mouth are too defined for realism. The upward curve at the corner of the lip doesn't seem to be supported by the muscle around the cheek &/or mouth, which wrecks all the beautiful work you did. The bottom lip looks great, though. Proportionally, her ear seems way too big, unless its meant to be that way eg she's an elf? Trout lips on image 2 seem a bit off putting aesthetically speaking (the bow on the upper lip is so pronounced it looks like those old fashioned fake moustaches and we have those fiercely upward turning corners again) and image 3 seems to be cross eyed? If you were working partly from magazine photos, bear in mind that there are people whose job is to deliberately 'enhance' images, hide lines & musculature, enhance pouts etc and you might just be replicating their work. I guess I should remember that people do surgically enhance themselves these days, so their actual features can sometimes look ridiculous. I like your manga (if that is the right term) girls better, though I think the arms on image 5 could be just a tad longer.

I drew the concept in Photoshop, Created the basic mesh in Maya, and did the rest in Zbrush.

Concept Car V2

Journal Category

Well I have finally finished the Version 2 of the concept car, just working on getting some good renders done.
Main differences visible from this angle are:
- Front end has been pulled back
- New Headlights
- Indicator clusters in the side mirrors
- Carbon fiber details

This was rendered at 4k and looks really crisp at that resolution :)

All crits n comments welcome !
Oh, I am currently looking for work, freelance preferable but open to otherwise :)

Cheers,

Snaking NSX

Journal Category

I did this late last year, realised that I didnt add it here:
Wanted to do something different over the weekend, so I played around with my old NSX model. I used some lattices to deform the car and wheels. I used a custom lighting system I'm
mucking round with. There was minimal work in PS.
Modeled in Maya and rendered in Mental Ray (as usual)
I set it up around this aspect ratio so it would work well on my new phone at 240 x 320.
If anyone wants that version, I can post it :)
All crits n comments welcome,

Josh B.

I took this from concept to what you see here all in one day.
I know there may be some imperfections etc, but wanted to see
what I could do in a day. Will add some more finer details at a later
point and some better renders.
Just had some fun with this :D
