Illustrator | 2D artist | Graphic Designer looking for assistance

Hey Guys,

I'm a Sydney based illustrator | Artist who is looking for assistance in getting into the creative services industry, particularly for gaming, as a career. I have freelanced as an illustrator for a range of other clients but nothing really substantial to maintain a living.

I'm looking for anyone who may be able to give any assistance on developing experience or ways at accessing specific studios through internships or freelance work that can progress into a career.

I have included a series of links to showcase a selection of my work, and hope that if anyone has the time, they are able to give me any feedback.
The first link is to a time-lapse video I recently created to help promote an exhibition I was featured in this year: www.vimeo.com/57677937
The second link is a collection of my works that I maintain through Facebook as a way of self-promotion: www.facebook.com/YewotPrime
The final link is an online portfolio of sorts where I post whatever completed projects I am able to: www.yewot.com

Any assistance would be fantastic!

There's a response from Echo Charlie Delta from our Facebook page..

"His work is awesome! I strongly suggest partnering up with any number of independents as a texture/concept artist or alternatively going through Newgrounds, IndieDB or Desura to find groups seeking artists (2D artists can really shine in Flash, for example, whilst a good concept artist can make life really simple for a modeler)."

Many thanks for the kind words! and awesome advice and insight as well, would not have located the websites and communities without assistance.

Work experience or internship in Melbourne

Hi all.

I'm in my second year of studies at Deakin University doing Bachelors of Information technology (games design and development) and I'm currently looking for work experience, internships or work placement for a developer in Melbourne. So far I want to get into 3D art of even quality assurance. I heard something about Film Victoria internships but I'm not sure what they're state of taking applicants are at the moment. I was hoping to get some experience in the industry by the end of the year.

Regards,

pgiang.

If you haven't checked it out already, we have a FAQ of sorts on work experience in Australia here. There are some additional threads on work experience in this section of the forum also which is worth looking out for.

As far as I'm aware, Wicked Witch are one of the few developers more known to accept work experience students. Two Bulls do, and I think Big Ant Studios might as well.

Additional Melbourne developers worth approaching:

Pub Games

Try approaching them to see if they're happy to sort you out.

Experienced 3D Artist looking for work, NZ

Hi.
I'm a 3D Artist based in NZ. I'm looking for new work and would be interested in applying for a 3D Artist or Lead Artist position.

I have just over a year of experience in the industry. My last position was as a Lead Artist at Rush Digital Interactive, where I created all the 3D art for several mobile games. I also managed any freelance artists we brought onto our projects. I was majorly responsible for developing the style and look for each game and had to make sure that the style was maintained throughout production. I was in charge of contacting and managing our freelance artist. I worked with the Project Manager to decide on deadlines. I was then responsible for issuing tasks to the freelance artist and ensuring that work was delivered on time at a satisfactory level. I also found myself in charge of the studios online presence. I managed our Facebook and Twitter profiles as well as communicating with fans on gaming forum sites. I took it upon myself, with the Project Managers ok, to contact reviewers and issue promo codes.

My portfolio can be found at http://blakedwan.weebly.com
I would really like to hear from any studios that think they might have a suitable job opening.
My email is blakedwan@gmail.com

Cheers

Wanted: High-Detail 3D Character Artist for Open-World Survival FPS

Hello!
We at Sandswept Studios are finishing up our current title, DETOUR, http://www.sandswept.net/?page_id=47, releasing for Xbox LIVE Indie Games and PC (on a certain platform of certainty!)

We're beginning development of our next PC game, a first person, open-world, multiplayer survival shooter, and we are in need of someone interested in working *currently* unpaid as a high detail 3d character artist. (6 - 8k tri models) This person would be exclusively in charge of all characters in the game, with additional modelers taking care of world props and so on.

The game will allow player customization, such as male/female, facial features, body features, and clothing. Experience in developing for such a system is not needed, but it's certainly a plus. Clothing will be separate meshes created on top of the player models and toggled on and off based on what the player/character is wearing.

Rigging and animation will be taken care of by additional team members.

If you are interested in this opportunity to be part of an incredibly innovative and unique title (the details of which we are keeping under wraps to the public as of right now), please email us at jobs@sandsweptstudios.com

NWN Peristent World 3d Modelling - Ideal for Folio

Hi all,

I am looking for someone (or several someones) to assist me with a few projects that I don't have the time or the technical ability to work on right now, but which I would really appreciate assistance with.

I am designing a NWN 1 Persistent World, and need somebody creative to help me with modeling a few tile sets. You would be using 3ds Max to make the custom content, it would probably be ideal for a university student working on a folio or something similar to that.

I don't have the money to pay somebody a proper salary or anything, but I can offer payment per piece completed, please email me at "star_of_thewest@hotmail.com", this is a standing offer and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Young computer scientist to-be looking for an opportunity to launch my career

Hello,

I am going to graduate a 5-year degree in computer science in France (in "Grande École") and after a first experience recently in the video-game industry, I would like to start my career in this field.

I studied and worked in South Korea for almost 18 months, and I'd like to stay far away from France, since I really enjoy the life overseas. So I am currently looking for some opportunity to work as a programmer in a Video Game Studio, even for a short-contract. I am still newbie in the field, but with my major in Graphic Rendering and AI, and my previous work experiences with an iPhone game, I think I can definitely fit into a position for a junior programmer.

I already saw that there is no many opportunities, but if you have some advice about finding a job for a new-grad, I would be really glad to listen to it.

Feel free to check my LinkedIN profile for more information about me: http://fr.linkedin.com/in/valentinjaniaut

Google for "outsource +freelance +3d" or something like that and a host of sites where people bid on work will come up. Be midful you will probably be outsourcing to India, China or some highschool kid using Dad's computer.

good luck - I expect you will get what you pay for through those services.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 08/06/10 - 12:50 AM Permalink

Whilst it is very easy to be suspicious of external sources, the reality is: the US outsource to Australia, and we aren't all high schoolers behind our dad's computers.

I've been using Elance, and I've found them as good if not better than local talent. The reason why is because YOU hold all the keys, and laziness is just not an option in fast-paced counties like India, China and Russia.

To give you an idea on what to expect, I placed a provider bit (that means I do the work) for the creation of 50 textures for $120. That's a serious low-ball from an Australian perspective - upwards of 50 hours of work there, and I got outbid. Someone with a great portfolio kicked my butt in price, and I lost the job.

Outsourcing is the future dude. You can disagree with it, but you can't ignore it. The people who learn to use it effectively have a lot more time, and a LOT more money.

Here's a list of books I recommend if you're going to start outsourcing, on a site built by a guy I hired on Elance.

Happy managing,
-Adam

Sadly i have to agree with the fact that Australian developers just cannot compete against unfavourable exchange rates. What makes a good wage in India, China and Russia doesn't cut it here. As they are fighting each other for the same jobs I suspect even for them the prices are low.

Thankfully (for my own career) I find much design work requires detailed and subtle 2-way communication to accurately communicate desired goals and negotiate suitable outcomes. This makes remote outsourcing largely impractical for some types of projects. Speaking of which I think booqbooq is a good example of this. The site really fails to communicate effectively what it is about plus lacks visual appeal, details that would have quite likely been addressed at face-to-face milestone meetings during the project.

There is also a moral issue - if you outsource to another country you really are not supporting local industry. It's an industry that is floundering and quite frankly could do with better support.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 09/06/10 - 7:51 PM Permalink

You're completely right about the issues booqbooq faces with presenting a simple message. But I don't think it's because of the outsourced talent; I think it's because I made a LOT of mistakes when originally designing it!

If I'd constructed a more robust design document with 100% UI flow, I'm sure that, with the aide of copywriting, the site would be much more polished. Sadly, my budget and time only stretched so far for this public prototype. Call it a work in progress atm :)

The patriotic "keep talent local" never hit me as important. The way I see it, people who get jobs are people who are good at them. I don't hire or deal with people simply because they're Australian. If I did that, I'd never have left my hometown of 50,000.

In the end, I think it's about horses for courses. Dealing with local developers you can meet with makes things much easier on the managerial side, but at the potential cost of a higher budget. Outsourcing is excellent for startups and people who are willing to train up their communication skills so they span several timezones.

I am a year 10 student and I attend Sunbury secondary college. I am equiring about work experience as it is a part of my curriculum this semester.

I am very keen to get into the field of games development/gaming hardware when I finish school and I feel this experience will be a great way to get a taste for what kind of work I will be experiencing. I am very interested in gaming consoles, video game design and the way they work, so I feel this is the perfect future career for me.

I believe that will provide me with the perfect opportunity to get a feel for the game development Industry. I would enjoy the chance to work as a part of your team because your company has an excellent reputation in the game/creative arena. I believe that games development/gaming hardware would provide me with a wealth of experience that I do not believe I would acquire anywhere else.

Job applications. Does being creative pay off?

I'm mostly curious to know. Has anyone applied for a job using some creative way, and had more luck then just sending out resumes? I remember reading a webpage about someone who applied for a job in a really creative way, which in the end resulted in them landing a job. I want to know if this has worked for anyone before i waste too much time on what might be a useless endevour.
( I don't expect that a creative way to apply will just land a job without a decent demo reel to back it. I'm just curious to find out if anyone else has tried it and had luck.)

Submitted by Johnn on Sat, 27/02/10 - 8:03 PM Permalink

I think time spent on good portfolio and interview skills is better than thinking up novelty approaches. I guess there is some merit in the concept though. If you can be remembered in front of other candidates (in a positive light) it is to your benefit.
I've never tried that approach although when i started sending links to a website instead of sending a CD or printed samples that might have been considered out the of ordinary at the time. (yes that was some years ago!)
I've heard of muffins being send with an application and being well recieved and read a great, although questionable story, about a guy who let the tyre of a car down. He Hid till the owner with whom he wanted an interview with appeared then 'coincidently' wandered past and offered to help with changing the tyre. During which time he chatted about the position vacant. The anecdote ends with him getting the job although I wonder if in reality it ended with a trip to the local police station.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sat, 27/02/10 - 9:05 PM Permalink

Yeah. I can imagine that letting a car tire down for an interview is a little extreme. But at the same Muffins feels more like a bribe. Has it ever been percived wrong? A talk I had earlier today from a non industry background just said to show my art off as much as I could on my resume and that sending a cake or muffins would be percived as more of a joke then a serious application.

..of artist's portfolios over the past decade or more. I can't recall ever hiring anyone who did anything out of the ordinary. The two most critical aspects have always been a) how good is the work and how how well does it match what we're looking for? And b) how well does the candidate interview? I won't say don't do it, but I will say don't at the expense of anything else. First and foremost let your work speak for itself.

The weirdest applicants that I can remember in recent times would be one guy who pleaded then (literally) begged job. Another who said about a dozen words (tops) in the entire interview.

If you can come up with a very simple idea that makes someone say "oh that's clever" with a wry smile, it can't hurt.

But personally I wouldn't spend any time trying to do something crazy, and I wouldn't do something too obvious. Just somethign clever and professional.

Real time should jsut be invested into the folio and showreel. It sounds boring but at the end of the day thats what employers look at. Anything else is just icing on the cake. Icing a cake should't take too much time or effort, and overly extravagent icing will never make a shitty cake employable.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 28/02/10 - 12:29 AM Permalink

Yeah, anything I do would be icing on the cake. My reel has always been the priority. Just thought with so many redundancies and poeple trying to enter the industry, that I should try something that will help me stand out of the crowd. Got to love how hard it is for a junior to get a job. 8 months experince just doesn't mean anything.

I think you can be creative in some sense of the word.

There's no need to be overly professional about your covering letters, resumes and portfolio - I think some creative license is not only appreciated but also necessary. Muffins/tyres/puzzles are all gimmicks and kind of detract from your presence. If you have a gimmick that's a part of a well conceived plan, then go for it - especially if you think it can differentiate you positively from others.
