  • When Peter Jackson announced Wingnut Interactive, the game development arm of his entertainment empire, a sense of excitement was felt in the games industry (both locally and abroad) on the potential of such a studio. • An article over at Courier Mail has Queensland up as the top earners of the local game development industry. From the findings of a recent Australian Bureau of Statistics report, Queensland game developers pulled in more than $55 million in the last financial year, accounting for a huge 40% of the total national amount. The report also revealed that Queensland held 48.5 percent of the game development workforce. Krome Studio's Steve Stamatiadis was at hand to explain why the Queensland games…
  • Since it's a bit quiet on the news front around here, I thought I'd make a post about GTA IV. As with many Australian gamers, I've been following all the updates and information on the local release version of GTA IV, particularly on any problems that an imported PS3 version might have on online play, or from the recent letter that Kotaku AU received from a Rockstar employee indicated, if it would even work at all. However, online retailers like Play Asia have assured local gamers that it will…
  • (press release) Melbourne – Monday 14th April 2008 Greg Bondar, CEO of the GDAA and Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA, today announced that they would be working more closely together to ensure that their respective governments gave their game developer members a 'leg up' by way of tax breaks. "Australian and UK game developers can compete successfully against game developers across the globe when market conditions are fair. However, the scales are increasingly tipped against them when the…
  • There were many very popular sessions at the Game Connect: Asia Pacific 07 conference, and 2K Australia's post-mortem on Bioshock was definitely one of them. All the seats were quickly taken, and those who didn't come early had to either sit on the floor or lean against the conference walls as Martin and Will provided some interesting anecdotes and issues that the team experienced during and after the development of the hugely popular Bioshock. Yes, here's another note. The first couple or so…
  • Righto, I hope everyone has been enjoying the footage we've captured of Game Connect: Asica Pacfic 07 because we're almost done putting up everything we recorded late last year. The video we've just put up is the CEO roundtable with Mike Fegan (from IR Gurus or better known now as Transmission Games), Rob Murray (Firemint), and Steve Fawkner (Infinite Interactive). There are some great insights from the discussion, and it's well worth listening to the anecdotes that come with the chats about…

  • Ah, I'm a bit of a forgetful chap when I have too many things happening at once, but a good friend of Sumea sent a message a few days ago calling for some suggestions, and I completely forgot about it until I saw that Screenplay had posted about it already. You might know Marcus Westbury as the organiser behind Free Play, and he's sorta got himself into speaking at the Australia 2020 Summit at the last minute. The topic for discussion is "How to encourage participation in emerging global…

Now, let's ignore the cost of living differences in America (where there are huge differences even between each state there) to Australia and see what the areas of expertise in their games industry gets in Australian dollars. - Programming: $83,383 US ($89,709…
