Final year students from Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) were given a great opportunity by Big Ant Studios, one of the largest game developers in Australia, to learn more about how a top Australian games development studio is run.
Big Ant's CEO Ross Symons and Art Director, Adam Briggs were both on hand to answer questions and talk to the students about the current projects and development process at the company.
"I have been fortunate to have worked with many graduates from the AIE…
(Hi, just making a repost of Conor O'Kane's message from the forum which details more about the iPhone game development course that's running in mid-November for a very, very, very affordable $800. If you have any questions about the course, be sure to post it in his thread at the link here!)

The program for Game Connect: Asia Pacific 2009 conference, which is being held in Melbourne this year, has been announced by The Game Developer's Association of Australia (GDAA) and is now available for viewing on the GCAP website. There are some definite must-see sessions that I'm definitely looking forward including:
Keynote Speaker, probably most known for his involvement with God of War : David Jaffe – Eat, Sleep, Play (via video link)
Keynote Speaker, Tim Stellmach from Vicarious Visions…
Capcom USA's Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development, Christian Svensson, will speak at AnimFX 2009 on the changing face of the games industry. Once dominated by retail console games, the market has opened up to include downloadable games, social networking games, and casual titles that are on almost every device we own.
With the definition of "gamer" being redefined daily, Svensson is responsible for helping set the strategic direction of one of the world's largest and…
Interesting article over at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) website on what their game dev students are doing to promote themselves as well as the games industry in Queensland. The students studying QUT's Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment course have been showcasing their talents as well as those of Brisbane developers such as THQ Studio Australia and Halfbrick Studios at events such as Gen Con at (the Brisbane Convention Centre) and Supanova.
I wasn't aware that…
Ah, I seem to have missed this one. Last week, Gameindustry.biz put up an interview with GDAA president and Tantalus CEO, Tom Crago, on how Australia game developers are faring during the current economic slowdown. His opinion? We're doing better than expected, compared to our overseas counterparts anyway. From Gameindustry.biz...
Tom Crago: We've been relatively resilient - certainly we've felt the effects of the downturn, and I'm sure most Australian companies are finding it more difficult to…
Congratulations must go to Farbs for taking out the indie game competition at the 2009 GDC China Independent Games Festival with his entry called Captain Forever. The GDC CIGF competition is only open to people in the asia pacific region, so Farbs did great by taking the top position and beating out some rather impressive looking competitors on the way. He takes with him the fantastic loot of $2,900 (US), as well as two GDC 2010 passes. Nice work, Farbs!
Imagine hijacking the International…
Nothing that exciting, still a bit to go before seeing game character fight, but the framework for the turnbased combat, and triggering it by walking around in the world, and then generate a hex grid over the current location is slowly progressing.
Still spent a lot of time since last update on the menu, and a grid widgit (wanted listboxes/ checkmark listboxes)
Also spent some time poking through the guts of the Ogre render engine to get it to accept skew matrixs (wanted the combat grid to skew…
I'm not sure how often you see these things on sale, but I got the word last night that a complete Motion Capture System is up for sale on eBay with a starting bid at the bargain price of $30,000. Now, there's no doubt that having your own motion capture system will save some big bucks in the animation department, so perhaps this will be a good investment for one of our local game developers.
The specs for this system look pretty impressive, although I'm in no way clued in on anything motion…
