Mini Comp: War General Portraits

Journal Category

Hey Guys and Gals

Just thought i'd post my latest mini comp entry. this is Gen'ral Scythe L'Kar (yes i forgot the ' in my entry :P) any screwups when it comes to spelling im blaming on submitting 10 mins before the deadline so i was rushing like hell.

I had to submit this at about %70 done as family, personal and other things monopolised my time and im a little pissed at some of the mistakes i made but it was a good warmup before dominance war and this now frees up some of my time for indie game commitments.

any C&C is truly appreciated

Austrian grenadier- normal mapping (part 2)

Journal Category

Back to low poly Austrian grenadier project. Here’s how it looks with normal maps. Now it would be time to add hand painted bump mapping for smaller details. It’s kinda funny- I’ve never really been into history of this particular period, not even when I was still considering myself “a historian” but uniforms from that era are so dashing and attractive for game dev that I just can’t let them be. I am still dreaming about making an FPS napoleonic shooter (that’s why I am bothering with this grenadier after all) unrealistic as it might sound. In worst case I will just have one more model to show around- nothing bad about it I guess.

Hades, Kingdom Hearts WAR GameArtisans Entry

This was my entry to the GameArtisans Kingdom Hearts Comp. You guys all know the specs by now, thought I'd just share my work. I chose Hades from the animated film Hercules.

Loved your entry vegas spitting image of hades, i like the work on the face but i think the clothes particularly the chest area was missing something, like maybe the heartless symbol or something, just my 2 cents anyway great work

Thanks for the input bro, I absolutely loved your piece. Somebody mentioned watching your models grow in quality and I have to agree with them. I love these mini comps. They give you great pieces for the porty. I would have loved to have given the modelling comp here a better go, but it was just bad timing.

"The game"- final entry

Journal Category

It's been rather hectic but in the end I've managed to get things ALMOST right. Surely it requires a post touch up since what you can see here is almost raw Blender rendering (and with materials barely touched to make things worse) but considering fact it's been done in so called "spare time" (should be called "stolen time") and under heavy deadlines I think it came up acceptable. Not that I am proud of it or would not like to do some things different having a choice (... and time) but for a time being I will just leave it as it is.

GameArtisian KingdomHearts Mini

Since everyone else is posting theirs, i thought i would too. I decided to model Crono from the Square-enix title Chrono Trigger. I was a little short of time to polish the submission, but i'm happy with the results of the model itself.

I've just put up some better quality renders for all intrested. As well as my concept for the character.

Well done tejay the only thing i reckon you should have changed is really upped the self-illumination a bit but other than that cool!!

wheres jono in all these comps the dude has dropped off the radar

Submitted by Tejay on Tue, 03/02/09 - 6:34 AM Permalink

Yeah i think the self illumination was on 70, the top shots had lights but i dont think they worked too well...i kinda rushed them. As for jono, i have no idea why he isnt doin these comps. Maybe he is busy with work or just slackin off.

Nice website Tejay. Of course once you start working in the gaming industry those websites tend to get put on the wayside sometimes :)

I am very impressed by all the work you have shown. I especially like Patrick....i know that sounds wierd...but a he is just the best character invention since stimpy.

I think your concept drawings have inspired me to draw more as well...they are very unique and brilliant to look at with my eyes.

I love the flaming dinosaur model as well!

Wait I love all of this work. Congrats. You must have a job right?...I would hope they would hire you with a portfolio such as yours.

The only improvements I suggest is....ummmm....hmmmm, can't really say much. Only that the lion head has a dog snout and the flames on the dinosaur picture could have looked better with particles I think....but not necessary really.

All the best with your adventures into the creative world of 3D ART!

Your models are looking sweeter everytime i look at them. I learnt a few things from looking at your mesh. I think if you could just push those textures further you'd really do well. Dont be affraid to saturate the texture when the style calls for it too.

Time to stop being unemployed ;) Push your portfolio out to some of the local studios or something.

Yeah, getting into the games industry is tough. I spent 4 months trying to get a games job (I'm a programmer) before having to put it on hold and just go and get whatever work I could find.

A year and a half later, with a lot of good (if questionably relevant) experience under my belt, I got my current games programming job (at substantially less pay... but it's worth it).

I'm guessing it's even harder for artists (not as many other jobs you can take while you wait for the right opportunity). But after all the disappointments there is a great sense of accomplishment when you land the job.

Good luck!

Im catching up i think ive spent 2 1/2 months.

I havnt got to the stage where ill ever put my search on hold, i believe diligance and persistance to be key and its not so bad in the meantime as im able to participate (around my current dead end job :) in things such as the art comps and the indie game which will do me good in the long run for practice.

I can say without a doubt though that when i do actually land a job ill be over the moon :D

The textures are really great! They add so much detail. And the model is so simple! It's amazing work! I'm still trying to get down the idea that most of the details are in the texture, not the model.

Savage Ant Rider

Journal Category

Hi guys and gals. I am new to this forum and wanted to contribute. Here is my W.I.P of my 3d character that i am creating for my demo reel. I have just graduated from Monash University and currently job seeking.

I am using Zbrush for the whole process for this character because i am more inclined to traditional art processes.

Image 1:
The first image is a zsphere construction of the ant. At this stage I'm only thinking about the silhouette and the flow of the topology.

Image 2:
I then sculpted the major forms and not getting stuck into the details which can happen when you in the zone. Then I had to retopologise to improve the flow of the topology.

Image 3: this is the final sculpt with all the details and accessories added.

Image 4:
I started on the rider following the same process from zsphere's to final. Once you get the concept of zsphere's it's very quick to get a base mesh to sculpt with.

Image 5:
Sculpted the major forms of the human body. I didn't want to go with a very muscly man because i wanted him to appear agile and acrobatic.

Image 6 & 7:
I started to create accessories and define the style of the character.

Next step is to retopologise for High poly and Low poly, add details using alphas, texturing using projection master and poly painting, and finally pose with transpose master.

Scarlet

From a very young age Scarlet's father would take her on regular hunting ventures in the forest outside
their estate, her father was a man highly placed within the Mafia and he had been identified without his knowledge by a local group of vigilantes as such, when she was merely seven years of age the vigilantes ambushed them when they were hunting. Scarlet's father was gunned down in front of her without warning, shocked and terrified she fled into the forest soon becoming lost and terribly alone.

Hours passed as she wound her way through the forest seeking a refuge from the horrors that now swam through her mind, a noise in the brush startled her putting her off guard when a lone wolf jumped out from behind and sought to end her, for minutes she struggled with the beast eventually killing it with her knife. Enraged now to near madness she cut the wolf's corpse up, skinned it and hung it over a tree bole. When morning came she awoke with a dark resolve and donned the wolf's skin and started moving out of forest, after several days she returned to estate and took up her father rifle and left that place vowing she would would have her vengeance.

Twenty Years have passed since that day and now she hunts within the
city with determination seeking to destroy those she believes to have destroyed her.

This is just a small summary of some of the stuff i omitted from the full backstory which if you would like to take the time to read, you can find it in another one of my journal posts as the four pages i wrote is a little more than the few paragraphs i can put here.

This will probably make little to no sense without reading the full biography, so i apologize for that.

Firstly my characters tattoo on his left shoulder. The rose is the symbol of the Blood Rose gang and above it is a heart with Nicole's name symbolizing that his love for his daughter will conquer the entire crime syndicate.

Also how he came to be called 'The Pitbull' what Lawrence did was with the death of the New York faction of the Blood Rose's leader he took the name and used it in the early stages of his crusade to root out the criminals whom had infiltrated the NYPD. He adopted the tag line as he left more of his old self behind became more of the vigilante he now is.

With the destruction of the New York syndicate and cleansing of the NYPD, 'The Pitbull' tracked down the other factions and leaders of the Blood Rose but by this point he had finally lost all of what he previously was and labeled any Law enforcement agency that hadn't been able to deal with the gang itself useless, and thus he started to murder innocent people.

Finally, his calling card the silver chrome rose. This is supposed to symbolize Lawrence's new purpose as 'The Pitbull', its steel cold appearance represents his emptiness as a human being. He leaves them either at the scene of a crime or impaled in someone at the scene of a crime this indicates to not only members of gangs across America but also to law enforcement agencies cross America that he is the law now. And lastly its shape, the fact that it is a rose I hoped to symbolize the final thing that the dead leader of the Blood Rose gang said “what makes you different from me?” even though Lawrence believes he is doing what he thinks to be right the rose is a symbol that he now shares many of the same traits that were exhibited by the Gang.

And in closing the Pitbull has become the most wanted villain in America and many other countries and he is still at large today.... the honest man he once was is gone....only a soulless killer remains.......Look for the Rose.

Unamed: Pheonix Brothers

Bio:
Unamed was one of two ideticle twins. After birth the mafia collected him from his perants before any record was made of his exsistance. Avioding the eye of the public, he carries out assasinations and other tasks for the mafia while his brother a rock star is performing. With no record of his existance and evidence that doesnt directly link his brother they cheat the law like a pheonix cheats death.

His calling card is a pheonix guitar pick.

Tsumea Modeller Challenge #10 - Viktor 'Thanatos' Mastin

Journal Category

Name: Abbey Miranda
Polycount: 3595 tris

a bit of a back story of the character:

Much is not known about the past of Thanatos. There are records of his association with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the Illuminates of Thanateros. It is said that even the infamous Aleister Crowley feared his very presence.

Mastin regards Gotham City as "a breeding ground for viral magick symbols that are at the same time self-obsessed and death-crazed...", which would explain why he setup base for his Mindworks corporation, a leader in technological innovation in this "city of freaks". He sports a fascination for Wayne enterprises and the man at its helm, Bruce Wayne.

He is a highly regarded occult practitioner, a modern day shaman and believes that the human mind is the ultimate weapon.

Mastin is a paradox of a man. While remaining both cold and calculated, he is also a child of chaos. He has traveled to many parts of the world in search for occult knowledge. His motivations, like his past are filled with shadows and mystery.

A man of technology and science, he sports a variety of lethal weaponry, from his trusty blade, to his favorite, the dart gun, loaded with Datura stramonium extract, a known deliriant, which induces hallucinations, psychosis and even death in his victims and leaves behind a Hermetic Talisman pierced into their skin.

VIS - My first 3D character

Journal Category

This is VIS (Vengence In Style).

It was my first character I designed and made in 3d. It was supposed to be a kind of human heavenly fighter in a suit. His sword has elemental powers and it's magic ripped of the sleeve from that arm. Coming from a slightly more futuristic world, his other arm is an arm cannon (it is under the suit). This was partly probably due to lack of imagination on how to balance the sword arm.

A few things I didn't get time to add were a better sword texture (with glowing text), better background, feather in the hat, and some others that escape me at the moment.

The Demon dude I loved in this since the texture colour was a bit of playing around with blending modes in photoshop and it works well for the character. Which confuses me if I deside to come back to these characters, if I'll make a demon vs robot game, or VIS game with demons and robots.

Blender contest- "The game"

Journal Category

It's been a moment. Once again I got myself into contest (can't help it- competing is something I can't really live without), this time it's polish blender community portal held contest with "the game" being a title. As long as picture is even remotely related to the game- it can enter. Since it's being made for fun I've decided to go as kitschy as only possible and based concept on life vs. death scheme, with angel and death playing chess. You can see the basic sketch (actually the very first one I did for this project) and base, untextured meshes (before any sculpting). I'll be grateful for all hints and comments you can give me.

Character Developement

Hey guys!
It's been a while since I last posted anything .It's been a really busy time with final pieces for school and such but hopefully you will see some more stuff over the break.

This was my Money Shot render for the character I had to produce and animate and there are also some sketches and such of her which I will add a little later.

Don't forget to comment!

Thanks

Cool! Does she have strange feet or long socks?
I like the character, although I hate low ride pants/undies and bellies showing on female characters for no reason. Does she have a story about her choice of clothes?

Submitted by MelScott on Fri, 05/12/08 - 11:55 PM Permalink

This character is a cross between a bashee and a nimph. She lures people from reality and steels their souls . But that is why she dresses so provocatively.
I also tried to give her a sense of culture through her attire and physical appearance eg. the feet.

Thanks for the comments too it helps alot!
