Hey Ahmed its benny from AIE, it looks awesome! What res are the textures? Are the broken windows textures or opacities? How did u approach the grass technique?

Submitted by AhmedRostom on Wed, 22/10/08 - 11:27 PM Permalink

long time man, did you find work yet? .... to answer your questions, the textures are high res, 1024 x 1024, there all different, the windows are opacity maps and the grass is also opacity but I played in photoshop to blend the ground and grass colours together so it seems like they grew out of the ground :)

I actually really liked the desaturated version you had up earlier. It really suited the theme of the picture really well. That's not to say that I don't like this one either, both are great :)

Great textures, this place looks like it would feel right at home in any 'Stalker' game *grin*

Lets take things further?

Rip off some of the horizontal wood structure, and place the removed pieces lying around nearby, or up against the house itself as though someone has tried to repair it but given up.

Hastily boarded up windows. Graffiti. Beat those barrels up some, twist them or riddle them with bullet holes. Smash open that roof so we can see some nice structural beams.

Just ideas, good stuff :)

Your ideas are awsome, but the problem is i had no time, personal reasons, but I can just imagine it :))

Render ! Please comment

Journal Category

Hey Guys !
Please comment on my work it really helps me to progress. Also keep in mind it's my first building so I have a lot of room to grow and experiment.

Thanks!

Hey, this is a good first attempt.

First of all it looks too flat and angular making it look fake. Some better lighting would cover up the mistakes, like a second light pointing at the back. I'm guessing you used the default lighting. You should look up some 'three-point lighting' tutorials.

The textures are ok, you can work on some bump maps for extra details in the windows, or even add extra polygons.

Hope this helps :)

I agree with the need for better lighting - I think your lighting is a bit too harsh (especially seen in your previous journal entry which has some really dark jagged shadows), and you definitely need more than one directional light in there. That should help soften the shading in the dome up the top too.

My other critique, which I was planning to write even before seeing Ahmed's journal post:

http://www.tsumea.com/journal/ahmedrostom/181008/old-house

If this is your final render, you need to present it much more nicely, especially if it's going to go into your portfolio! Put some roads, sky, street signs, a car or two in there. Light it up nicely and make it pretty :) I love what ahmed's done in that picture, and that should be an example on how to present work.

Thanks so much for your critiques !
It's great that you've both taken the time to give me some ideas and I will defiantly look up a few tuts and expand on the image .My current teacher also suggested the same thing.

Thank you so much.

Robot Spider Animation

Journal Category

I made this Spider Robot a while ago and I've done some animation cycles for it here's the first a jump.
I've done some more but they need some tweaking so here's the first finished one.

Submitted by Sakichii on Thu, 17/06/10 - 9:59 AM Permalink

It's a nice animation, I like how it wriggles a bit before jumping. It's good for a first jump in a sequence, but it's not exactly an animation cycle since it's position moves and jumps back to the start at the end of the animation. An animation cycle is supposed to be on the spot and seemless...so that it appears as though it's jumping multiple times rather than replaying the same animation.

HI ALL.

I have been interested in this comp for a while now and this weekend I have finally pulled my finger out.

This is what I have so far....

Basically so far his name is PANE aka Guy Patterson.
He was a gifted artist specialising in glass. One fate filled night whilst putting the finishing touches on the masterpiece that would forever stamp his name in the pages of history tradgedy struck.
The war between Batman and The Joker had finally cime to an explosive end that distroyed nearly three city blocks, including Guy's studio.
The explosion shattered his masterpiece and sent shards of glass from his sculpture through what was left of his studio.

Miraculously Guy survuved but his body had been ripped to shreds by his sculpture. Having lost everything in the explosion Guy vowed to seek revenge on society and the man that cost him everything. The Joker was dead but Batman will soon be in a world of PANE.

OK so that is the back story. but now PANE having kept a love for art from a previous life sets to work on his new creations. His art however has now taken a macabre and sadistic turn.

Keeping his victums alive through torture he slowly dips their bodies into molten glass, forever preserving their burnt remains twisted in pain behind glass.

His calling card is a body part from is previous victum preserved in the same manner.

Well there he is. I have concepted him and started with the 3D. Please feel free to make comments and any crits are welcome.

Cheers.

Duncan.

hello.

Firstly, Thanks for the props guys.

Secondly I need to post a WIP of my work. I have knocked out a simple base mesh ready for some sculpting and started with the head. His body is going to be covered in scars but I think I am going to handle those with a second pass. First pass is to get the majority of the sculpting done.

Thanks again guys, and again comments and crits more than welcome.

Cheers.

Duncan.

Long time no see!

Journal Category

Hey everyone,

Long time I havent been around here! I just thought i would show something that ive been working on for the past few weeks in my spare time.

Hope you enjoy!

Shes not a game model, no polycount limits and no texture sizes, just all flat colours using a simple skylight with HDR map in it and a single omni for lighting.

Made her up purely for fun, and something totally different to my usual work.

I hope you enjoy it :)

I plan to be a much more regular member of the society again now that I've come out of hibernation!!

Thanks for the comments, i know she needs to be animated, but im *still* a crap rigger and animator lol! really only started focusing on being the best character artist i can be a couple of weeks ago, so im all about producing characters now - no more admin, no more management, no more papertrails woohoooo finally get to just focus on making characters!

Austrian grenadier- normal mapping

Journal Category

It goes rather slowly but- hey, no rush, I am doing it for pleasure (at least this time). Having UV mapping in place I can now make high res version for normal mapping. I've divided character to three maps (flesh, cloth and shiny bits) to make things easier later on, when entire thing will get into engine and now I am going to try combining sculpting with bump map and baking results to normal / AOC maps (since I've just recently learned how to do it in Blender I do not have to jump to any outside tools like Melody). At the moment I got only part of sculpting in place but there's no rush... no rush at all. Tomorrow I hope to finish sculpting and get into painting bump maps.

Misc Artwork

All textures and renders are by myself, all models are by various friends and co workers, excluding the desert forerunner scene was modeled by me.

Austrian grenadier (napoleonic wars)

Journal Category

I am finally getting out of team management (which I really- really hate) back into REAL 3d jobs... sure, it will take some time to tune up my daily schedule but boy I am glad to finally get there. Anyway- here’s a little piece I did today “just for fun”- a low poly model of Austrian grenadier from napoleonic times. Its nothing really big- just one day “quickie”: 3037 polys (I guess I will make it a bit lighter, especially hands) but it was just nice subject to work on.

Blender sculpt test

Journal Category

I’ve recently discovered new prototyping service site- Shapeways (not sure about posting links here so in case you want to find them- just google for company name). Since they do support Blender (actually it’s a tool preferred and promoted by them) I've decided to give it a go and do some high poly “bust”. A rare chance of working with sculpt tools- working with levels I do not really use them. For sure sculpting in Blender is not as good as in Z-brush (I gotta buy that soft anyway, jut to be able to keep up with the market) but it allows to work with shapes in quite comfortable manner.. All basic functions are there- pressure, brush definition and such, main disadvantage- AFAIK - is memory management but with amounts of memory available on modern machines it does not seem to be so bad (although still it would be good to have it sorted out- just in case). I gotta add some nice wig to this one, proly some kind of frock with high collar and then- printing. Can’t wait to see it “real”.
