There have been some rather big bombshells in the games industry recently. For those who were lucky to have met Phil Harrison while he visited our shores for the Australian Game Developers Conference (AGDC), news of his departure from Sony must've have left many in deep shock.
But the biggest news, however, is of Electronic Art's intention to buy out Take Two, a publisher with many inhouse development teams such as 2K Australia, for a handsome sum of $2 billion dollars. And while Take Two has…
Gamespot has a first look at Puzzle Quest: Galactric by Infinite Interactive who were showing off a demo to punters at the Game Developers Conference '08 held just last week. The folks at Gamespot noted some of the similarities to their previous Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords title, as well as some of the big changes that take place between battles. ...in Galactrix, your quest will span planets, star systems--and perhaps even the entire galaxy. A number of other…
For the new R rating classification for games to be a reality in Australia, it needs approval from all six state attorney-generals. In late 2002, this was almost a reality. The sticking point in the agreement was South Australian Attorney-General, Michael Atkinson, who moved to veto the introduction of the new rating.

New government, new chance at getting the R18+ rating for games. It seems that this government is interested in acknowledging IEAA figures that show the average Australian gamer is 28, more than 50% of gamers are over 18 and 88% of Australians support an R18+ rating for games. It is a shame that this information from The Age comes with the title “R-rating risks influx of excessively violent games”, but overall the mood of the story is neutral towards giving adults the choice to play adult games…
Next Generation has posted an extensive interview with Pandemic president Josh Resnick covering what it’s like at post-independent Pandemic. Apparently not much has changed, everything that made Pandemic what it was is the same and they have a lot of creative freedom, which is a sign of the “new EA”, which is buying studios that are good at what they do, and leaving them alone to do it.
[EA will] enable them to take their passion, put it in the products, and basically stay out of their way. It’…
